My biggest gripe with most mental health awareness campaigns is how they never value informed consent. The narrative is all "seek help, it'll be great and magical and healing" and "everyone is good and wants to do good for you." And if anyone is like "well, I think it's important to point out that psych professionals aren't infallible, some are abusive or just not a right fit or will be wrong" or wants to bring up that engaging with the system can come with a loss of autonomy and be very traumatic, they're accused of being anti recovery and pessimistic. But we're talking about vulnerable people here who deserve to know what they're signing up for. I went into this all trusting and wanting to get better too. And when I had bad or traumatic experiences with it one after the other, it made me feel like I was the problem and that I was just beyond help. I really would have appreciated it if someone warned me so I could have made a more informed decision about engaging.
Yes! It's so frustrating how every story about psychiatry which isn't overwhelmingly positive is quickly dismissed as dangerous misinformation, especially when considering how many people have been and are being hurt by the psychiatric system. I wish more people walked in knowing that there are real risks involved and how to potentially navigate them, but so many spaces won't at all entertain psych critical narratives, and it puts people in serious danger to deny these risks and silence discussion of them.
