Really Bad Typography

The entertainment industry, particularly in film and games have some really bad typography. Whether it be on posters, credits, boxes, manuals or even on screen graphics. Here I highlight some of the awful typography we see around us everyday.

Hey eHarmony, have you heard of kerning! Jeez.

First of all, this is one of those disgusting freemium games from EA that tries to rape you of your hard earned cash. Secondly, there is some AWFUL typography. Look at the orphan! Why not make the speech bubble larger. Why not drop some other words and tidy that rag? You'd think with all the profits they make from a freemium game that they could spend a little time looking after the typography.

Call Of Duty: Advanced Warfare is the game that revitalised the tired franchise. Yet they still couldn't be bothered to look at the typography that has plagued the series since its beginning. SORT IT OUT!

Oh Marvel. While I admire a lot of what you’ve done for the world of comics and movies, the rag on this type in Contest Of Champions is truly awful. STOP IT!

You’re the butt of jokes Arial Black and stupidity seem to go together very often in Font Police cases. Here’s a case of varying baselines, point sizes and degrees of faux condensing and expanding in the white text. We’re not sure what the lower S in the red text is all about. Nevertheless, we intend to throw the book at this offender.

We're back!

It was a few years ago when I started ‘Really Bad Typography’ and for whatever reason other projects took priority.

Well I’m back and more focused than ever on highlighting some of the sloppy typography we see around us each and every day.

As well as my own observations, I will now be accepting submissions to the site (just use the submit link on the left). Please highlight on the image exactly where the atrocities can be seen with a clear description expressing your frustration and anger.

I'm totally and utterly addicted to Fieldrunners 2. What I'm not addicted to is looking at their horrendous typography on the loading screens. Complete Fail.

Halo Waypoint for iPad. It's simple really. Drop the word "game" and give "play" a bit of company. I know you can do it Microsoft.

Just over a month until Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 is with us, and Activision thought it would be a good idea to give us a website with some truly sloppy typography.

I hope the game was given a bit more attention than the type was!

I was browsing the web this morning and this banner advert appeared for "Department For Work & Pensions".

Safe to say it ruined my morning having to look at this awful typography! Surely that "a" could have been dropped and the orphan fixed.

Another game release, the amazing Little Big Planet for PSVITA.

And with this release is some more Really Bad Typography. For a game that’s so polished and respected for its presentation, you’d think they could have one member of the development team look over the copy.

Borderlands 2 – One of the best games this year, yet some of the worst typography. You'll constantly notice errors throughout the campaign. Sort it out Gearbox!

C'mon Adobe. InDesign is the premiere software for design and layout as well as featuring extensive options for controlling typography. There is no excuse for this orphan! What are you playing at.
