in other news, a wip! bc I wanted to do a little more w the Knight Nagisa and Princess/Dignitary Honoka :D

my art has also taken a bit of a rehaul in terms of coloring etc… practice, as it seems, is very important

I recently posted a vid on tiktok w hastily drawn characters that rlly left an impression on me as a queer kid in a very conservative household bc i was going through a rough patch that made it feel like life was just gonna be a closet forever. I phrased it as a silly little collection of doodles but left tags for lgbtqia/queer artist which genuinely had me nervous for no reason, but then someone left a comment saying:

“I feel so blessed to have stumbled upon such a beautiful whispered confession of the heart”

Im gonna go breathe heavily and shed a few tears now because i have never felt more real in my life.

To the person who left that comment, thank you :,) that meant a lot.

A part two (of this) but for Honoka! bc it would be a crime to have only one half of this duo.

In the same vein as Nagisa’s adult uniform leaning towards her armor references, Honoka’s look here leans into princess-y vibes with a touch of strategist/tactician/fighter.

The Breakdown:

Overall, her og design feels very Rococo with her light blue pleating down the center of her top, bows, and lace! (cure black may have ruffles and bows, but no lace)

Her hair ribbon mimics a royal headpiece

The top layer of her skirt that splits in the middle is probably what marks her as more princess-like than Nagisa, bc it reminds us of the two weird pillowy things that the og animated princess Cinderella has.

To go off on a tangent here, the floofs on both sides of Cinderella’s hips are actually loose references to either bustles or trains found on court dresses from the 18th century, but it’s hard to say definitively what the hell she was actually wearing bc they’re two symmetrical puffs w no train or anything in the back😵‍💫 (I can’t link it for some reason, but search “Disney Princess Historical Costume Influences Part 2”)

But that specific element most likely is a reference to Robe à la Polonaise, where the overskirt is bunched to reveal the petticoat underneath. The rest, however…

Whatever’s going on w the drapery on her neckline looks like the shape of a ribbon, and the skirt design is pretty spot on!

mainly bc we didn’t get to see an adult version of Nagisa and Honoka :,(

I ended up taking an entirely different route than canon for making the adult version of them and their uniforms, and leaned into the subtle references to armor nagisa’s cure black outfit has. In fact, I’d say she’s knight-coded w a hint of princess, while Honoka is princess-coded w a hint of knight. Maybe it has to do w Mepple being the chosen warrior to protect Mipple, who’s a princess.

The Breakdown:

Her turtleneck that’s layered underneath her shoulder caps mimic a gorget

The cropped red top(?) she wears kind of resembles a cuirass worn over a gorget

The shoulder caps/sleeves are the spaulders!

I should’ve probably kept the hearts on the knees to make my point stronger, but the ones on her og design r kind of like the poleyn while her leg warmers r like greaves.

favorite things about hetamyu:

1. they’re not afraid to go somewhere a little darker than the original source material.

2. (partially because of reason 1) we get to see a side of the characters that isn’t often seen in the original source material, it’s nice:

Italy gets to go full feral, and also gets to be indirectly responsible for hurting some of the people he loves the most

Germany gets to experience more emotions than we usually see from him

Japan is a little shit sometimes

America…is actually kind of dangerous

England is the punk that animanga England only pretends to be

France gets to be a bad guy in ways that make sense, and in ways that…didn’t really

Russia, aside from the producers not knowing what to do with him at the end of gw, isn’t really a bad guy. in fact, he’s usually the one getting dunked on (but that’s because okki’s also usually the one getting dunked on)

China gets to mentor more people than just japan, and is surprisingly bad ass when necessary

Austria is also a little shit sometimes

Spain…he’s probably still the closest to the animanga version…loves tomatoes, loves Romano, happy-go-lucky idiot. but we do get to see his bad ass side too

Prussia-and this is entirely because of gaku-gets to be someone who’s actually not entirely confident in himself, but isn’t bad at pretending he is. of course, that’s more so in nw, he has a lot more genuine confidence in ww. both work really well for him

Romano gets to show he cares for his brother and Spain, rather than just hiding behind an angry exterior

seriously, hetamyu is fun and heartbreaking and ridiculous and confusing, and I couldn’t recommend it more

ok just them in solo now <3 I lied I remember why I loved this pairing sm, it just feels so wholesome in a “old married couple that never fell out of love” or just “omg!! they’re crushing on each other!!” kinda way, and for slightly angstier audiences, the pirate era (CAUGHT ik you read insolent peridot)
