Disney Epic Mickey -Review by Rose.Agosto
Disney Epic Mickey/Nintendo Wii/Junction Point
[Videogame Review]
It’s a true shame that Walt Disney could not see this game for himself; it is a very unique, magical and cute game. The game has a simple story line, with the one and only Mickey Mouse. Epic Mickey (2010) immediately starts out with Mickey stepping into a work station where The Wizard (I’m guessing his name might be Merlin…) was painting his miniature and alternative version of “Walt Disney World” called Wasteland. Mickey (as always) was as curios as Curious George himself, waited for The Wizard to leave his station… and went ahead towards the miniature world. He tries to paint just like The Wizard but fails miserably as he accidentally spills thinner all over it. Paint starts to wash out, thinner started to eat out the miniature world. Mickey eventually gets sucked in Wasteland by some goofy looking thinner monster, and that’s it. THAT’S HOW IT RANDOMLY BEGINS.
I have to admit that the story is creative, but it was displayed and played to fast at the beginning of the gameplay. I would have loved to see it play a bit more calmly and less in-your-face-don’t-blink fast. Once you’re in the Wasteland, you start immediately with a tutorial. It’s quite essential that a platform games presents at least a tutorial on the first match, but in EVERY SINGLE LEVEL?! Why?! One of the downfalls of the game (or probably the most annoying thing of the game) is the exaggeration of explanations, hints, and I’ll-tell-you-what-to-do-next moments; literally every 5-15 minutes of gameplay. This kind of made the gameplay a little annoying and at some points boring. But I guess it’s no big of an issue, I mean we managed to stay “calm” when Navi would annoy Link (us) telling him what-to-do-all-the-damn-time, right?! So maybe some gamers might not mind stressful and annoying sidekicks.
Graphics… It’s a Wii game, graphics are normally good enough looking. For example of those with digitally advanced HD televisions Epic Mickey might look okay but not good enough, on my behalf; it looked very good on my big old boxed television. But it will never look as bad as a Nintendo 64’s Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time that’s for sure!
The game is short and sweet; seriously how many games can you recall having the option of beating your enemies by turning them good? The game is adorable, it brings back old memories of what Disney was all about, no Hannah Montana, no Phineas & Ferb; just good old Mickey Mouse toons (like the old Disney Channel Programming) The game also presents you different Disney World attractions such as: Main Street, Adventure Land, It’s A Small World After All theme, Space Mountain, Magic Kingdom, The Haunted Mansion theme, Pirates and more. You’ll be able to travel and relive some of Mickey’s first cartoons; with inspiring landscape according to each episode. You also get to meet some of Disney’s forgotten creative characters such as Oswald the “Lucky Rabbit”, new characters such as The Gremlins, and the notorious evil characters such as Peter Pan’s Capt. Hook.
With most of the important stuff said I’m giving this Wii platform game (rated from 1-10) a solid 8.5 for:
· Unique, creative and charming story line – But displayed too quickly and randomly
· Simple yet elaborate gameplay – But with over excessive use of hints and tutorials
· Normal okay graphics (like most Wii Games I suppose)
