Maybe it's just me, but one reason I love getting comments on Ao3 that point out details of the fic that the commenter liked, is that for a moment it lets me see the fic through their eyes

Like, I have a pretty big self-criticism problem, like usually within 24 hours of posting a thing, be it a drawing or a fic or whatever, I start finding more flaws than good sides in it and feeling that actually it's a pile of shit, utterly pointless and bad and thoroughly unlikable. I know this is my issue, and something I need to work on, btw, but I just. struggle ever seeing the good sides of my own work. Even work that was an idea I truly deeply liked and wanted to see done! Even things I enjoyed working on!

But when someone leaves a comment that's like "oooh I like how [x] and I love [y] detail!!" it kind of. Let's me for a moment see past my own issues. It lets me look at the work, and the details pointed out, and go "you know what? yeah, that thing there is very good". Sometimes, on a good day, it might even give me enough time to actually re-read my own fic and enjoy it

So, readers: if you read a fic, and there's a detail you like - no matter how big or small, whether a minute detail of the description of someone's clothing, or something about the way the story is structured, or literally anything! - let the author know! If there's any detail that stood out to you in a way you liked, and you feel at all inclined to leave a comment, then please, let the author know the detail that caught your eye! It can brighten up their day so, so much!

Shout-out to fan-fiction writers who don’t or can’t write the 50k fan-fictions, because of a lack of focus or motivation, or mental illness.

Shout-out to fan-fiction writers who don’t or can’t write smut, but are still lumped into a group that is almost expected to write smut. 

Shout-out to fan-fiction writers who can’t update chapters frequently for maybe a multitude of reasons, and get messages daily from people asking for “their” new chapter. 

Shout-out to fan-fiction writers who aren’t big name fans and hardly get ten kudos or one comment on their fan-fictions. 

Shout-out to fan-fiction writers who stay up all night editing and rewriting and don’t get much attention on their work no matter how much they feel like they promote their writing.

Shout-out to fan-fiction writers who don’t write a lot and are constantly asked to write more but can’t for whatever valid reason they have. 

Shout-out to fan-fiction writers who have the courage to post their writing online and only have it publicly made fun of for grammar or poor characterization. 

Shout-out to fan-fiction writers for writing their fan-fiction, posting it online, and continuing to do it no matter how much or little attention they get, and constantly improving as a writer with every upload.

You all rock.

There are so, so, so many reasons:

You gain that skill level only through practice. So practice.

No matter what you’re writing, no matter how badly you think you’ve written it, there is ALWAYS some audience that will love it and cherish it.

You can use what you write the first time around as a first draft and just rewrite it again later when you feel like tackling the story again!

Rewriting the same story over and over is a valid writing process. It’s literally just creating new drafts. Each iteration will be better than the last, because each is building on your growing skill and experience.

If you love the story, it will always be worth telling simply for your own enjoyment. If no one else ever sees it, that’s okay! Your art should be for you first, anyway.

Write it anyway.

Snippet Saturday!

hello loves! i'm currently working on a bunch of different projects at the moment but this one just warms my heart.

it's Codywan and i'm obsessed.

From the moment he laid eyes on the auburn-haired Jedi who was to be his General he thought the galaxy had frozen in time, and in that moment, he made a solemn vow to keep the General alive. No matter the cost. And as the General approached with hands folded between his muted robes, Cody stood ram-rod straight, unable to breath or move. He feared that if he did time would resume and he would not be able to memorize this image.

“CC-2224, I presume?” 

Cody looked directly at the General and almost lost himself in a sea of blue. Bright and soft and warm. The General’s eyes were nothing like the swirling, crashing seas of Kamino during a storm. Nor were they anything like the calm seas after said storm. No, this was a new shade of blue. It had no name but Cody was certain to find a name for it. And in that moment, he found himself entranced. He cleared his throat, the sound earning him a small smile. 

“Yes, sir. At your service.”

The General hummed. “Do you go by another name, commander?” 

Cody, for the first time in his life, was at a loss for words. And he was never at a loss for words. He always knew what to say and how to say it. Alpha taught him that. He swallowed hard before answering the General: “Uh, ehm, Cody, sir.” 

The General’s smile broadened, and Cody swore he saw the entire galaxy in those blue eyes. Blue eyes that were looking at him and no one else.   “Well, Commander Cody,” the General bowed his head. “I look forward to working alongside you. As you were.”
