Can I request for Wukong x s/o as exes who still have feelings for each other and can't forget each other after centuries of not seeing each other?
“(Won’t) leave you behind.”
Sun Wukong x Monkey!Reader
Summary: You and Sun Wukong are lovers from the past who fell apart and went separate ways. But as luck would have it you happen to stumble across one another centuries later only to find that those feelings of love never truly vanished.
Warnings: arguing, implied violence
a/n: first ever argument I’ve written, this also takes place right before the fight between the gang and LBD back when SWK was being very secretive, and you wanted to choke him.
There is also a lot of childish banter in this
Also! Wàngù means “stubborn” in Chinese, if this is incorrect, please let me know!
“Tell me why we’re coming here again kiddo?” You asked looking up at the gushing waterfall that stood before you, the sea spray misting over your fur leaving little droplets clinging to the ends. “We are here to see the Monkey King!” Mk announced excitedly, literal stars in his eyes paying no mind to his clothes slowly becoming soaked from standing in front of the roaring wall of water. “I was worried you’d say that.” You muttered; fists clenched at your sides. You don’t know why you were surprised; Flower Fruit Mountain was infamous for being the birthplace of the “Great Sage, equal to Heaven.” You yourself had run around the trails of the mountain with the tan simian several moons ago. But that was a distant memory.
The waterfall split down the middle, pulling back like a watery curtain and revealing the firefly lit cavern behind it. A small gasp escaped your lips. It was so dilapidated than when you last visited, the pillars that once stood tall and proud had crumbled and broken, thick green vines had wrapped themselves around the stone towers, taking away from the now matt gold accents.
As the two of you walked deeper and deeper into the cave, the more worn down the place became. But oddly you found all the plant growth sprouting around you, nice? You weren’t sure of the word.
It made the previously grand and intimidating cave, inviting and cozy. Amid all your exploring you didn’t realize that you had arrived at your destination until MK spoke up again. “We’re here!” he excitedly exclaimed, “Look! There is Monkey King’s epic shack! Oh! And here is where we train! He’s thrown me off that cliff so many times!” The little protégé zipped about the sunny cavern showing you every little thing there was to see. That was until a certain gold furred simian made an appearance, jumping down off his nimbus cloud.
“Hey bud!” Wukong greeted, his fangs showing with his friendly grin. “Monkey King!” MK yelped in surprised, caught off guard by his master’s sudden appearance. You stood back, fur up, tail bristled, not out of hostility, but from nerves. You watched the boys interacting, Wukong seemed to be teasing MK for his jumpy reaction while the boy tried to defend himself. While doing so, MK’s eyes locked with your own and as if he suddenly remembered why he was so excited to get to Flower Fruit Mountain, a wide grin spread on his face. “Monkey King! I have someone I want you to meet!” the boy announced, taking his master and comically spun him around.
MK let out a sound of surprise and confusion as he looked up at Wukong. “Your what?!” The monkey stood stiff staring at you from across the cavern, his stance matching yours. Uptight and ready, prepared for one to lunge or run. MK, being oblivious to the tension created between the two simians, kept spouting off questions to which The Monkey King finally covered the boy’s mouth to quiet him. “Yes kid, y/n and I know each other,” he looked back to you, “we have for a long time.” “But you dated?! I thought Monkey King didn’t have time to date!”
“He doesn’t.” you suddenly speaking up brought the attention back over to you. Your arms were crossed, ears perked up and eyes holding a look of defiance.
Wukong’s shoulders sagged, and he let out an audible sigh, tail on the ground and ears drooping. “You know that’s not what happened Peaches.” You let out a scoff, “Yes that’s exactly what happened! You didn’t like the fact that I didn’t want to just stay locked up in some tower or in the depths of some cave while you went and ventured the world!” “That is not true!” Wukong defended taking a step to you, his guilty demeanor turning defensive, “I didn’t want you to get hurt! Did you really think I wanted to leave you?” You have an annoyed huff, “I couldn’t tell you Wukong, you aren’t exactly known for your transparency or ability to voice your plans.” “They’ve got a point there!” MK piped up. You gave a look to MK acknowledging his words and gave a look of “See what I mean” to Wukong.
MK’s words did strike a chord in the simian though as he gave a growl, at this point the two of you stood toe to toe. Ears down and tails flicking dangerously. He knew he wouldn’t take a swing at you, you on the other hand was questioning if you should land a punch or scratch on his cheek. It was thanks to MK that neither of you lashed out. “Did the two of you ever talk it out?” he timidly asked, feeling hesitant to give any input on a situation he didn’t understand. “Because what it seems like to me it’s just a miscommunication and lack of trust that led to this, just a small change could’ve made it so the two of you would’ve been together after all of these years.”
The protégé’s wise words managed to calm the monkeys, their tails no longer lashing and their claws that neither realized were out retracted. Wukong chuckled, pulling MK into a choke hold and giving him a good old noogie, much to the boy’s disliking. “When did you get to be so wise bud? Must have been from your amazing teacher.” And there it was, the old Wukong, as proud and high horsed as ever was back. MK managed to wriggle out of his master’s grasp, a serious look on his face that said he wasn’t playing. “No training for today.” He announced. “What?” You and Wukong both asked, shooting a look at each other before looking to MK. “You two obviously have some unfinished business to attend to and Pigsy needs me to go deliver some noodles.”
Wukong sputtered, “You aren’t just going to leave me here with them are you!?” you let out a growl and glared ears pressed down. “I second that.” You shot at him earning a gasp defense, the gold furred simian rounding on you, “I’ll have you know that I am an absolute delight to be around!”
The two of you stood grumbling and growling, tails lashing. The sparks could be seen shooting between your eyes. In your time of childish arguing, you didn’t notice MK leaving until a monkey dropped down onto Sun Wukong’s shoulder and said something into his ear. “He did what?!” the king demanded and looked around frantically, sure enough, the Monkey King’s mighty successor was nowhere to be found. “Are you kidding me?!” Wukong cried out in annoyance, gripping the fur on his head.
You stood in the background, a few of the little mountain monkeys coming over to you, hugging your legs or playing with your tail while you watched your past lover’s childish reaction to being stuck in the mountain with you. “You know you don’t have to stay right,” You asked with a brow raised, sitting on the dusty earth to let a few of the monkey’s that were crowding you sit in your lap or climb up onto your shoulders to search for bugs in your mane. “you could always leave.”
Something about you being so willing to let Wukong leave made him feel funny. It wasn’t a good funny either, it was dishearten feeling. The fact that you were so desensitized to him leaving you behind without a word to the point that you reminded him he could leave hurt. He realized how he hurt you.
“No, it’s alright” he sighed running his fingers through his matted hair, wincing when his claws caught on the tangled bits and tore them out. His quiet curse of pain caught your ears, and you looked up from gently running your claws through one of the monkey’s hairs to Wukong. “You’re just going to hurt yourself doing that,” You gently scolded earning a slight eye roll. “So, you always use to say.” He chuckled coming over to sit across from you, some of the mountain monkey’s going over to the king. “And I was always right.” The monkey gave you a look for getting the last word, but this time his look was more playful than hostile.
Silence settled over the two of you. It drifted from awkward to comfortable. That was until Wukong’s slight groan of pain flicked through your ears. You looked up to see him pulling another ball of matted hair, this one bigger than the last. “Oh, come here you wàngù.” You huffed, gently placing the little monkey that was sitting in your lap on the ground, much to its disliking. Wukong slipped off his nimbus cloud, a frown of confusion gracing his features as he walked up to you. You simply patted the ground with your clawed hand, tail swaying behind you.
Looking hesitant, he turned around and sat with his back to you. “What are you do-ING” Wukong was cut off feeling your clawed fingers gently running through his mane. His tail was fluffed up in surprise, his body tensed, it had been so long since anyone had touched Wukong without it being a punch of some form. You didn’t say anything, you just kept on, pulling any bugs out of his hair, untangling or gently tearing out the patches that were matted beyond repair.
Sometime during this time, Sun’s purrs filled the air, and he leaned back into your touch, his tail finding yours. You noticed but decided not to say anything, letting the simian enjoy this peace. It made you curious though, had he been receiving no attention since the two of you parted? You had figured he would’ve moved on to someone else, but from how quickly he caved, it seemed that wasn’t the case.
Looking up at one of the various holes in the cavern’s ceiling you noticed that the moon was now high in the sky. You were shocked, had time really gotten that far away from you? “Well, I better get going.” You announced standing up, causing Wukong, who had been leaning back with his head in your lap to fall over with a flop, dust rising around him. “What, what do you mean go?” the monkey asked not caring to hide his disappointment in you leaving. You have a smirk walking to a nearby rock that held your satchel and bent down to pick it up. “Oh? Before it sounded as though you were dying to be anywhere else by with me.” Your teasing earned some mumbles and blushes from Wukong making you give a genuine chuckle. “Well, I suppose if you’re going to miss me that much, I could come back to visit? If you’ll have me?”
The King perked up at this, his monkeys did too. “Really?” he asked, “You’d do that?” You gave a nod, your tail gently swaying while Wukong stared at you. Something about the way that the moon reflected off your fur and made your eyes twinkle made brought back memories. “What?” You chuckled, watching him stare with a lovesick expression. When he got up and dusted himself off you grew nervous and backed up a step. “Wukong?” You asked again as he got close and took your hand in his. He gently took it and brought his lips, pressing a tender loving kiss on the back. You stood there, eyes wide and glowing, you were thankful for the cover of night feeling how hot your cheeks were.
“I promise I won’t leave you behind this time.”
His words had you floored. “I know what happened all those years ago was a consequence of my youth, I didn’t think and just ran headfirst into things, and that cost me what could’ve been what of the greatest things in my life.” You blinked, “Are you feeling alright?” Wukong gave you a look “I’m not playing around.” He huffed, “I know, I know,” You sighed looking down at your shoes, “I could’ve been more independent too,” you admitted, “I should’ve just gone with you rather than be the damsel that was left behind.” “I guess we both share some blame then?” Sun chuckled, sounding almost relived.
Another pause and the spell between you were broken. “Well, I guess you better get going then huh?” he said, kicking at the dirt to avoid your eyes. Wukong didn’t want you to leave, it was evident, but he wasn’t ready for you to stay. “I can come back tomorrow if you’d like?” You offered, “You can show me what’s left of this falling apart mountain.” Wukong gained a look of mock offense, “I’ll have you know this mountain is in top tier condition.” He boasted, leaning up against what looked to be a pile of rocks but instantly fell causing the monkey to jump. You gave him a smirk as he chuckled. “Anyways, I’ll see you tomorrow then?” you prompted heading to the cave’s opening. “I’ll bring some peach pies I made.” Stars appeared in Wukong’s eyes as did in several other Mountain Monkey’s eyes. “It’s a date!” he called without thinking.
You gave one final smile and wave before turning tail and dispersing into the dark cave, heading out of the mountain while Wukong stood there, a wide grin on his face that instantly fell once you were gone.
“Why did I say that?” he sweat dropped.
