every few months I open my Tumblr app and go what the hell is this
Since it's NaNoWriMo, I figured I'd drop in with a reminder that I'm way more active on Twitter (ew) these days! My feed is about 60% pictures of my cat, 20% misc, and 20% talking about my original writing! I'm currently querying THE LONE LAW, a fantasy with western vibes, and I'm about the start draft three of a horror-that-plays-with-fantasy-tropes nicknamed THE PLANTS ARE SUPER ALIVE/ROOTED. If you need more bi female protagonists in your life, come on over!
Mermay sketch! Spent way too long coloring this haha

There’s a post going around with the sentiment of like ‘you can tell when a gay character is written by a gay person bc the stereotypes are the right ones” and people keep adding what the ‘right’ gay stereotypes are with things like ‘always getting iced coffee’ or ‘having enamel pins’ and honestly….
Honestly, on a more serious note, the number of times in the past few years someone who was assumed to be straight wrote a gay storyline and loads of people kept talking about how they wrote their gay characters in a straight way because they were straight only for the author to end up publicly coming out due to all the pressure should probably lead at least some people to reevaluate whether their ‘straightdar for authors based on how they write gay people’ is truly always accurate lmao.
#ok listen to me: this is not about whether you personally like iced coffee and enamel pins or not#it’s about how the queer movement has been co-opted by middle-class teenagers and turned from a political cause into an aesthetic#it’s about how a community that’s historally about radically accepting those Othered and marginalised now asks people to assimilate#to their standards of queerness at the risk of being outed#it’s about how status symbols of class and disposable income (which iced coffee and enamel pins ultimately are)#are used to gauge your performance of your queerness
i genuinely don’t mean to hate on teenagers here, but just point out that on platforms that foster conflict-driven engagement, teenagers engage in a fuckton of conflict-driven engagement, and it’s largely due to the life stage they’re in. teenagers are just as smart as adults, but they’re in a life stage where they’re still trying to figure out who they are and what that means.
they readily use gatekeeping, stereotypes, cliques, and ingroup-outgroup discrimination to try to come to terms with the big confusing and contradictory mess of being a human among other humans, because they just showed up and started asking these questions like a year or two ago, not a decade, and they actually need to be using some broad assumptions because they don’t yet have enough experience on their own. they’re engaged in a process of refining what the world has already told them, like we all are. but they just started. so everything is really big, really important, and really infuriating to them in a way that people who have thirty years experience instead of three will have probably forgotten about.
thinking something is simple and easy because you don’t know enough yet to see how the situation is infinitely complex is also a normal part of being new at something. it happens to adults less and less because we stop being new at most things, but it does still happen.
however, it does mean that having teenagers drive these inexperienced and conflict-driven conversations on what it means to have a queer identity doesn’t yield very good results. it means that these conversations keep turning into gatekeeping exercises based on oversimplification and cliche.
i don’t think the solution is invalidating teenagers and freezing them out of the discussions they have every right to be participating in, though! i think the solution is just for experienced adults to keep speaking up for complexity, nuance, and acceptance of diversity, and reminding kids that the world is a really complicated place, and that that is a really good thing.

I had the office on as background noise so this happened, aka. how I’ve spent a week in a niche joke lol anyway, I guess you could call it……. ✨the (military) office✨ 😏
