My OC’s world is set in the future, about two hundred or so years from now or something? Idk I’ll check later. Anyway point is that humanity has lowkey completely trashed the world right? Most people barely or have never seen the sun due to how cloudy it is, acide rain is a lot more common than it should be as well as other natural disasters, the ocean is practically bleach and will genuinely harm you if you even touch it. The days are hot and the nights are freezing, Forrest’s are becoming less and less prevalent, and the economy is really, really bad. Basically everything has gone wrong, including a rapid population decline as a result of all this (we now sit at about 7 billion that dropped from about 9-10 billion over the years).
In order to survive, the first generation of mutants, while I be referring to as Gen 1 Mutants, has powers that adapted to their surroundings. The first 3 were a girl who could accelerate plant growth and use her own energy to give plants nutrients, a boy who could control water and seperate it down to the molecule from other contaminates, and a boy who could breathe in the polluted air like is was oxygen and actually produced oxygen himself when he exhaled.
So this all seems good right? Humanity’s adapting, just like the animals did when everything started to go badly! But people were scared of the mutants, thinking they were gonna wipe humanity out. So Dr. Amanda Widdershins essentially harnessed this fear and amplified it, gaining power and influence rapidly. She made the decision to deploy her agency (Mutant Control) across the world and capture mutants.
The mutants begin to go into hiding and those that can’t defend themselves or hide well enough are captured and either sent to do extremely dangerous labor if you’re 18+ or sent to labs to be studied and tested on if you’re a minor. Lots of Gen 1 Mutants were captured fairly easily, unfortunately.
So now we move on to Gen 2!! This is the generation that my oc, Rei, and her friends are a part of! :DDD
Quick warning my explanation might get a bit complicated from here.
Quick things to note:
The mutant gene is recessive, so there are instances where two ‘normal’ people can give birth to a mutant.
Someone who is a mutant can genuinely not know they’re a mutant as mutant abilities showing up are extremely random and cannot be triggered. The only indicator that someone is a mutant if they do not have their powers is their eyes. Mutants eyes are never ‘natural’ eye colors, no matter how close they get they’re eyes will always never be within the ‘natural’ spectrum of eye colors.
Mutant powers are pretty much decided by the mutants gene during pregnancy, however circumstances, emotions and whatever is actively going on at the time of a power awakening can change how they work. Ex: Your genes decided you can make yourself transparent. Yippie!! But if they decide to activate when you’re pretty calm and nothing’s happening you’ll probably only be able to make yourself somewhat transparent rather than fully transparent, which sucks cause you’re still pretty visible.
OKAY I KNOW THIS HAS BEEN LENGTHY BUT BEAR WITH ME
Gen 2 Mutants have abilities that are a lot more aggressive/defensive rather than adapatable to their environment, if that makes sense. What essentially happened to the mutant gene between Gen 1 and Gen 2 was it freaked out at not being able to be passed along cause everybody was getting captured and/or dying and is now trying literally anything and everything to keep existing. This leads to a huge range of powers and abilities in Gen 2 whereas Gen 1 mainly had passive abilities. For example, you could get the totally broken power of just being completely invincible from almost everything all of the time, like you don’t even have to think about it or anything, while your friend has the arguably significantly worse ability to be able to eat anything. I’m not saying it’s not useful or good for survival, but it’s not gonna do anything against an entire army of people who are trying to neutralize you and are pretty good at finding people. The mutant gene is essentially just doing process of elimination. Now, there are scenarios where your friend who can eat literally anything can actually fight off the Mutant Control people with or without their powers, but it’s pretty rare. In most cases you, the one with full time invincibility, are more likely to get away and evade capture and/or death.
Is it fair? Not at all bro, you’re essentially gambling for your life, a life that you didn’t even want to live cause at the end of the day you didn’t ask to be born or have the genes you have.

i hate how much people care about their ships being "canon" now. spirk fans didn't publish zines full of fanfics in the 70s only for modern fandom to grovel at the knees of corporations and beg for things to be canon. use your imaginations, don't allow billionaires to think for you.
