during the cuban missile crisis and through the rest of the cold war, the US arsenal of atomic bombs and atomic ICBMs dwarfed that of the USSR. at the end of the cold war, and in 2018, the US has an astronomically larger arsenal of atomic bombs and atomic ICBMs than the rest of the world combined. 

whenever people talk about nuclear disarmament, why is the focus not on the US? The US can engage in “mutual disarmament” treaties with every holder of nuclear weapons in the world and STILL be at an advantage. if every country in the world with nuclear weapons decided “ok lets all get rid of an equal amount of nuclear weapons to the US” then at the end, everyone could just have zero nuclear weapons except for the US which would still have a tremendous nuclear arsenal. 

perhaps, maybe, somehow, the one country in the history of the world that HAS ASSEMBLED A USABLE STOCKPILE of enough nukes to destroy the world 26 times over might actually be uh EVIL?! just a thought…

We need to talk about the just world theory cause a lot of the ableism we face is rooted in this worldview.

The just world theory basically means the assumption that people get what they deserve. That people who work hard are rewarded and that struggling people would be rewarded too if they just worked harder. That the world is a just place.

If you aren’t struggling yourself, the just world theory is a very tempting worldview to adopt cause if bad things only happen to people who did something to deserve it or didn’t do enough and if hard work can solve anything, then the world is a nice place and the starts quo is acceptable. And most importantly, you can live in the illusion that you’re safe and that the things you see other people struggle with won’t ever hit you because you work hard and do things right.

The just world theory is the reason why so many people react to mentally ill and disabled people with variations of:

“You just need to push through.”

“You just need to change your attitude.”

“You just need to exercise more.”

“You just need to try this diet.”

“You just need to live healthier.”

“You just need to try x alternative lifestyle.”

“You just need to fight harder”

Cause admitting that the disabled/mentally ill person isn’t at fault for their illness/disability and that it can’t necessarily be fixed with the right lifestyle changes and the right amount of hard work means questioning their whole worldview - that good thing happens to people who work hard and that bad things can be avoided if you make an effort - and most importantly, it means that they gotta face their own mortality and that the unfairness that is disability and mental illness could hit anyone - including them. And this is terrifying to them.

It’s much, much easier to insist that if a mentally ill or disabled person just did xyz, the world would be just and they’d get better.
