         It was always so easy to make things worse —- that was what Chloe did best, after all. Set alight something she couldn’t keep a grip on, fuck everything up, watch while everything around her burned to the ground to leave her stranded and SINKING. Joyce deserved better than that. The teen angst dramatics, the paranoid ramblings of a man who hardly deserved her, after everything she’d been through. But, while she could never understand in a MILLION years what she saw in him when dad had been so good for them, she was happy. Close enough.

        “  —— That doesn’t give you the right to threaten my FRIENDS. ” Friend. Singular. Max. Rachel was practically dust in the wind by now, embers burning out, just like everyone else.

          Chloe paced backward, still waiting for a slap, a shove, anything to confirm her suspicions. “ Max came back, and she —– she doesn’t deserve any of your bullshit. She had my back. So the world is ending. Big deal, David. Who the fuck cares? ”

    David knew what Max was like, as he did for most students at Blackwell. It was his job to know them. Whatever relationship had been rekindled between her and his step daughter, he had his eye on. Maybe this friend would actually be a good influence on her, if what Joyce said were true. “Yeah, she did,” he said with a hint of accusation in his voice, hands planting on his waist as he turned to face her. “Takin’ the fall for your pot, real cute.”

   “I don’t know Max outside of Blackwell, so I’ll let that slide, but there’s more going on here than you realize Chloe...” The man sighed gently, doing his best to soften up how he talked to her about this. She wouldn’t hear it otherwise. Still, he had seen Max get into a tussle with Nathan, and then she had shown up here. He was determined to get to the bottom of what was going on at Blackwell, but with Chloe coming in and getting mixed up in the scene, his home life was getting dragged into it too. The last thing David wanted was for his stepdaughter to become the next Rachel Amber case. “I know you were at the school yesterday, and I want you to stay away from there. That Prescott kid is nothin’ but trouble, don’t get yourself tangled up in that mess.”

   “Then what would you have me do Chloe? Stand back, do nothing while you go through this --- this phase of self destruction?” All David had ever known was discipline. Structure. Tough love. Sometimes he wondered if he could do something differently for her, but he didn’t know how he would. Besides, it wasn’t like it would make a difference at this point, Chloe already had it out for him, he didn’t see that changing anytime soon. “I love your mother, and whether you accept that or not, I’m going to be here. It’s only as hard for you as you make it.”

“There probably is something going on-” But was it any of their business? Probably not, but it was the red flags setting off in their head about something… No, someone. “I don’t really know, actually. It’s kinda like how you’re suspicious of people, except I have no power or proof?” You can never trust art teachers, it seems. “Y’know about the photography teacher, right? Mr. Jefferson?” That’s where some of their paranoia comes from.  

   David put his hands down onto his utility belt while Ally began to explain how they felt, his serious, determined expression shifting into one of surprise as they mentioned Mr. Jefferson as the reason for it. “Mark Jefferson?” He scowled as the name sank in, glancing around the area briefly before saying anything about another faculty member. David kept tabs on teachers and staff just as he did any other student, despite that technically not being within his job’s boundaries.

 “I’ve heard the rumors about him and Rachel Amber, don’t get me started on that guy,” he muttered out the last few words, leaving out some of the other, stronger opinions he had about that elitist prick him. “What exactly did you want to tell me?”

“i can’t see what isn’t there, david.” chloe folds her arms over her chest. “i’m just another thing for you to whip into shape, right? to keep under control? i’d rather be alone than fit into your little regime.”

   “That’s not true.” He sighs, turning his eyes back forward towards the road. Chloe was difficult, and he was strict. David knew that she didn’t want that sense of responsibility or order in her life, but in his eyes, letting her tear herself apart like this was worse. He wasn’t going to stand back and watch her suffer from the sidelines. “I’m not your father. I get that, and I know I got that message across --- poorly.  All I want is for you to do better.”

“…Noooo?” The tone was played as innocent, but they haven’t done anything that counts as a massive crime. Other than small bits of arson back at American Rust, Ally didn’t cause much trouble. Keeping a low profile of their anarchy for what seems like weeks, it seems.

“I’m only asking to get rid of some paranoia, I guess.” Ally hates admitting things like this, but lying wouldn’t get them anywhere when it came to David. He’s a security officer, right? He’d know when someone is bluffing.

   “The idea is usually that you shouldn’t have to feel paranoid if nothing’s goin’ on...” He looks over the student before him a bit closer, picking up on the uncertainty in their voice. David knew what paranoia could do to someone, he was guilty of that sometimes, and he knew it. He also kept it to himself, so hearing Ally speak up about it was a good thing, right? The veteran’s face softened, a slight frown appearing beneath his mustache. “You can tell me if something is going on. You ain’t gonna get in trouble for honesty.”

          Anger seemed to be wasted on the Price household’s resident veteran charity case; Chloe had PLENTY to fight back with, but none of it seemed to stick. In a world where everyone worth loving vanished without a trace, it was pure irony that David was still here, lingering, looming over her to correct her every move, like some ill trained dog waiting to be put down. She rounded on him, hands slipping into her back pockets. If anyone wore defiance like a shield, it was her.

          “ I think you get off on talking tough shit, ” she countered. No swear jars up here to reign her in. She remembered William, his quips about the mason jar on the kitchen counter just waiting to supply her college fund. Screw that.

          “ Why don’t you stop taking your vet rage out on the ONLY place that’s not yours to fuck up? ”

    Of course she’d bring that up. Why wouldn’t she? David tried hard to be patient, but so often it came back to the past he so desperately wanted to avoid. But there it was, dragged back into the light and setting him off.

    “You got no idea what it’s like out there!” he shouted, fists clenched, “You never had to --- to watch people die next to you, fightin’ for something you don’t care about 4,000 miles away from home. You’re not the only person who lost people they cared about...” He stopped himself from going on. Chloe didn’t want to hear it, neither did he. Turning his head with a gentle sigh, David shut his eyes to gather his cool again before he said something he’d regret. 

  “Chloe, I know you’re ... hurting, but you can’t keep lettin’ yourself slip like this.” His tone had gone soft. Genuine. He wasn’t scolding her, he just wanted to be heard for once without it being thrown away. “Losing people you love is hard, I know that, but there are still people here who care about you. You fight for those people, you don’t let ‘em out of your sight because they’re --- everything. Don’t lose them too. You’ll never forgive yourself if you do.”

“-You still ‘keeping an eye on me’?” The question was out of nowhere, you could even say it was out of the blue. But it was out of curiosity, since it had been a while since anything of pure interest has happened. (Well, anything that David knew of.)

   Nobody was ever really ‘off the hook’ under David Madsen’s watchful eyes. Some people he kept a bit too much of a tab on, sure, but he never let anyone go out from under his notice. The most unsuspecting person can be the most at risk for trouble. He took his job very seriously, even if it was just to give him some inflated sense of duty again. Turning a stern look down at Ally, David quirked an eyebrow, a look of seriousness about him.

   “Why? Is there somethin’ I should know about?” he asked with no lack of his usual gruffness. “I keep watch on everyone, it’s my job. That means you too.”

          “ Dude, back off. ” Chloe spoke like she might combust, like the marrow of her bones was just as combustible as anything she’d SMOKED that very morning, leaving a telltale haze in the air.

          Eyes narrowed. If the rest of the world — particularly Arcadia Bay — was off limits, wasn’t this little slice of home sweet home hers to ruin as she saw fit? Anger did incredible things. So did heartbreak. She rose to her feet, flicking the butt of her cigarette into the nearest ashtray. Not once did she break eye contact — not once did she admit defeat. “ ——  You’re not my MOM, asshat. ”

    The former soldier could hear the usual anger in her voice as she clashed with him. It was either that, or a complete disinterest every time they talked, or argued as it was just as often. His eyes broke to follow the cigarette as it was discarded into an ash tray, which luckily for her landed in it’s intended target. He maintained his stern expression and held his ground as Chloe stood and took a step towards him, letting her show off her ‘fangs’ or whatever.

   “I’d back off if you didn’t give me so many damn reasons to step in. You think I enjoy fightin’ with you?” David looked away and took a few steps to the side with a heavy exhale, arms moving back down by his side as he gazed over her disaster of a living space. “Just LOOK at this place Chloe. If you can’t do it for yourself, then do it for her, not me.”

   “Don’t speak to me like that,” he retorted sternly, voice just below a shouting level. David managed to keep a cap on his frustration this time, for Joyce’s sake if not Chloe’s. He hated arguing with his stepdaughter, but he wasn’t going to go easy on her about this either. It was her room after all, he didn’t understand why she just couldn't listen to someone else for once. 

  “Your mother told you to clean up this... room, days ago. Can’t you do that, or are you just content livin’ like this?” His arms crossed firmly, eyes narrowing in on Chloe’s with the usual seriousness in them. “You’re not the only one who lives in this house Chloe.”

Rebooting

What the hell, I’m gonna try to be active on here as well. This blog is going to be a sort of “side project” to my main blog @rustedxmetalxheart but this will give me a chance to write different scenarios from a different perspective, and give me a bit more to do. I’ll be a bit slower over here, so if you want to find me your best bet will be to message me on my Chloe blog. With that being said, feel free to send in anything or talk some plotting with me.    Standing by the front steps to Blackwell just after the classes had ended for the day, David found himself watching the drone hovering around the campus yard in amusement, the machine’s operator standing in the grass with her eyes either down at her iPad or up at her drone as usual. With much of the usual crowd funneling out back to their dorms, the security officer found his curiosity getting the better of him. Tucking one hand into the pocket of his navy blue pants, David stepped forward from his position and went down the front steps to approach the black haired girl. He hesitated initially, but quickly cleared his throat and glanced up towards the flying object that Brooke was manning.

   “If you don’t mind me askin’, what exactly does that thing do?”

      𝓕ingers delving deeper into her hair to knead at a covered scalp, Dana looked to David as he began in a typical question. Predictable enough in exactly what she had expected of David Madsen, Dana couldn’t deny the confusion she felt as the normal routine of yelling failed to come. Brushing curiosity aside as she began further into his room, Dana halted as she stood before his gun cabinet. Disinterestedly admiring arms of varying caliber and stature, Dana finally brought blue eyes to settle back on David with a cocked brow. “…Honestly? I don’t know a single thing about guns.”

      Sheepish smile only growing in skin deep embarrassment, Dana shrugged as she tore her gaze from David before settling back on the cabinet. “I…I’ve shot those air-rifles at carnival booths, and I was pretty good, but it’s hardly the same.”

      “Truthfully, I was thinking on my feet, and that was the best ice-breaker I could come up with.” Looking back to David with a turn of her torso, Dana shrugged before shoving her hands into her pockets. With a smile conveying a small nervousness that didn’t even exist, Dana wondered if David was studying her just as much as she was him. Deciding against calculation in favor of simple conversation, Dana laughed again. Softer, and far more genuine, Dana met David’s eyes again. “I’ve wanted to thank you for your work for a long time now. It’s nice having someone out there who cares about the student’s well being.”

    David wasn’t particularly surprised that Dana didn’t know anything about guns in truth. She was a cheerleader after all. Not the type. Still, he could at least appreciate the attempt of cordialness.

   “’Least you’re bein’ honest.” He said quietly, eyes drifting down to the side to look towards the washer, the extended, non bitter eye contact from Dana admittedly putting him off quite a bit. David wasn’t used to sharing pleasantries with Blackwell students, simple polite eye contact being one of them. However, her successive words quickly snagged his focus back on her again, eyebrows raised faintly in surprise at her appraisal. A student was... thanking him? The veteran’s expression softened, but the surprise was ever lingering.

  “You’re... thankin’ me?” He questioned, finding it almost hard to believe that someone in the Vortex Club of all things would ever be grateful for what he did. Dana wasn’t like them though... “Uh, well - thank you. For bein’ polite, but you don’t have to thank me for anything. It’s my job, whether people hate me for it or not, I’m just lookin’ out for you kids. I don’t want y’all screwin’ up your future, or puttin’ your education at risk. Or, you know, gettin’ yourselves hurt.” David had been there, he knew it all too well. “I was a teenager too at some point, believe it or not. I did stupid shit too, but if I can help someone, somehow --- I’ll sleep okay at night.”
