How To Save A Life / Jo (self-para)
Three weeks. When you’re a kid staring into that length of a holiday from school, it seems like forever. Like it’s never going to end.
It does.
Unfortunately, when you’re an extremely pregnant crazy woman who needs to get her crap together before the freaking kid arrives, the time seems to speed up. A lot.
Which was why when Jo Wilson felt the first contraction, she told herself she was imagining things. It was too soon. She wasn’t ready, and any kids of hers would know that. Obviously it was just gas, or maybe Braxton-Hicks. So she went back to watching crappy re-runs, lying on the couch like the beached whale she was.
And then the pain got bad. Really, God-I-hate-him-for-doing-this-to-me bad. Naturally, the man in question wasn’t answering his phone, and Lexie was nowhere to be seen. Of course this would happen to her. A routine pregnancy was out of the question, right? Or even one where she didn’t have to make her own way to the hospital?
As per usual, when it came down to it, she was on her own.
Thankfully, a taxi took pity on her waddling ass pretty quickly, and she got to the hospital a lot quicker than expected. Unfortunately, that was as far as her luck went. Braeden wasn’t answering his phone, or his pager. Amy was probably shacked up with Doctor Trauma if he wasn’t still pissed about what they did on their road trip, and if Kim or Lexie came anywhere near her right now with their smiling and happiness and breathing, she might kill them.
The labour wasn’t overly long, according to the nurse, but it sure as hell felt that way to Jo. Nobody told you how much it hurt. All they talked about was the joy of creating life and other annoying bullshit. Although, secretly (and she’d never admit it) she thought maybe it was kind of worth it. Her little demon spawn was most definitely superior to any other baby in existence. She just looked smart, and she’d clearly inherited the fine Wilson genes. She, because Jo hadn’t exactly decided on a name yet. Everything sounded stupid, and it wasn’t like she had some dead aunt she could name the kid after.
And then someone handed her to her and she forgot about everything, about picking the right name and not having fixed things with Braeden yet. And she felt happy, almost deliriously so, because this baby was perfect, and everything would be okay, she'd find a way to show Braeden that she loved him, really loved him, and-
And someone was taking her baby from her and she wanted to shout that she wasn’t done yet but she couldn’t because she felt weaker than she ever had before in her life and the EKG monitor was going crazy and there was so much blood and a nurse was yelling something about uterine atony and she just had time for one last look at her baby before she lost the ability to keep her eyes open and everything went dark and
Josephine Wilson, M.D.

R.I.P.
Oh, trust me, I know. And I’m pretty sure Braeden’s got it covered. I mean - he is a Peds surgeon.
Yeah, you're right. It's just- a lot.
Neither am I. It’ll come to you. You just have to…accept it.
Which is you should let him take the wheel for a while. Trust him Jo.
Did you know how much crap a kid needs?
A lot.
That’s great, Jo.
I..no, you didn’t. You just needed some time.
Well, I've had time. And I still have no idea what I'm doing.
He bought an apartment, Kim. With rooms and a crib and baby furniture.
It is. [she laughed a little] I’m a week behind you so that has to be right. That’s..That’s good. You’re doing great. How’s the little one doing?
Surprisingly, I got the all clear yesterday.
I know I screwed up, Kim.
Lennon,
I’m sorry but…I mean it’s just coffee…
No, it isn't. It isn't even that. It's freaking decaf. So I may be acting crazy over a cup of coffee, but remember I haven't had the real stuff in over six months.
Well...
Alex is bored.
Maybe if Alex didn't talk about himself in the third person, he might have more friends to entertain him?
Lennon,
The nurses said you were in a consult and they’d give it to you Dr. Wilson…
And you trusted them? At least I can take satisfaction from the fact that they probably thought it was caffeinated. I nearly killed an intern because I hadn't had any coffee. You have blood on your hands, Lennon.
Well..It’s about time you reappeared. You’re due in what? Three, four weeks? [she purses her lips and smiles a little] How did the you time go?
Four weeks? It can't be, can it? God. It is. The me time went...scarily quickly. I didn't mean to disappear. I just had a lot of thinking to do. But I'm better now. Me and Braeden are talking, and I'm trying to tone down the crazy.
Lennon,
Where's my coffee?
A pretty whale. [she grins] Where the heck have you been? We were supposed to be buddies and you just fell off the radar.
Charming. I've been...thinking. Sorting myself out. I think we can all agree I needed to. I just needed to be by myself for a bit, you know?
..Oh my god, look at you.
Jo, you look amazing [she laughed a little as she tried to hug her]
No, I don't. [laughing] I look like a whale.

Braeden: Hey, it's been months, Jo. I can be kind of shocked.
Braeden: Will you come over so we can talk?
Braeden: Didn't think you were.
Jo: Yeah, I'm coming over.
Text || Jo
Jo: I'm sorry. I'm so, so sorry.
Braeden: You're...what?
Jo: Oh, shut up. I am admitting I screwed up, ok?
Jo: This is me apologising.
Jo: I'm not drunk. I swear.
Text || Jo
Braeden: I got an apartment that's not a hotel, I left an envelope with the address and a key for it in your locker, in case you ever need it.
Braeden: And it's time to stop avoiding me, you're due in five weeks. We need to talk and figure things out.
Jo: I'm sorry. I'm so, so sorry.
In case anyone is wondering
It’s extremely boring though.
You'll be back to work soon, regretting the fact that you never found out the father of the kid on yesterday's episode.
