Real Talk
I feel like I’m the only person in the entire world who went to see How to Train Your Dragon 3 and came out feeling... disappointed. Before you point your pitchforks at me, let me explain. My number one issue was the Hidden World. Or, the lack of it. The subtitle of the movie is literally The Hidden World. And the characters do find it, but we literally get one (1) scene in it, and judging by the size of it as Hiccup and Astrid fly by, we only saw a small portion of it. A lot of the trailers featured the shot of them flying through the bioluminescence, when that was basically all we got to see of the place anyway. I want to see more! But no, we see pretty much everything we saw in the other two movies as far as setting goes, and we know right down those falls is a whole new world, just teasing us.
Now onto the story. For one, I wish the Light Fury had more of a role than ‘look pretty, make toothless love struck, and maybe right at the end do one (1) thing that actually makes a difference in the story’. If you want to know her character, watch the few seconds of clips with her in the trailers. That’s literally all you need to know about her. Where’s the characterization? Does she hate people so much because of her capture, or another reason? How do light furies differ from night furies other than color? Is she secretly as playful as Toothless or is that a quirk only for him? We don’t know.
Another thing that bothers me is the overcrowding of Berk way back at the beginning of the movie. I just don’t get it. They’ve been rebuilding their houses regularly because of the dragon attacks in the first movie. They’re obviously good at carpentry, and doing it fast. As far as we know, they don’t have any close neighbors, so why didn’t they expand out to accommodate the dragons? I know before they probably lived close together for safety in numbers and having them in one tight area made them easier to defend, but at the point of the third movie they have a vast number of trainable dragons, so they can cover more area from above with scouts. They could have easily expanded and still been pretty safe.
And finally, the ending. I get why the dragons left, but it left a lot of holes in the plot. For one, you have a society that has grown alongside the dragons, and used their power to get by. If you had a group of people, isolated them, and took away the electricity they had learned to function with, it would be difficult for them to adjust without it. And I understand that the dragons are living things and electricity is not, but my point still stands. Look at the island they’re on! It’s nothing but sheer cliffs. I can’t imagine there’s a vast variety of wildlife on such an isolated plain, and the Vikings sustained themselves mostly on fish anyway from what we see. How do they get down to sea level? Building a ramp from the top down is difficult and dangerous for a human with limited technology. The dragons kind of left them stranded up there. And there’s the fact that releasing animals that had been tamed back into the wild usually gets said animals killed, because they aren’t adapted to the wild anymore. All those dragons have had everything provided for them for years, and now they have to go out and do things on their own again.
Finally, there’s the theme. HTTYD 1 and 2 had themes of strong friendship, building on the bond between Hiccup and Toothless. In 3, a big deal is made on how Hiccup feels that he is nothing without Toothless, but I think it’s made very clear that the both of them lift each other up and make themselves stronger. They can both survive without each other, but they don’t have to, and both them and the people around them benefit from that. There’s this idea that’s pretty prevalent in our society that friends are there forever.... until those friends get a significant other, and then they fall to the wayside. It just rubbed me the wrong way that a franchise built on the foundation of a friendship that survives the tests of anything life can throw on them, shows that said friendship is pretty easily broken up by marriage (since its pointed out that night furies mate for life, that’s basically what it is).
I don’t know, I’m probably overthinking this and ranting too much, but I wasn’t very impressed with this movie, which bums me out a lot because this is my favorite franchise in the whole world. Maybe a second watchthrough will go better, but for now, I’m just going to stay disappointed in what was, versus what could have been. This whole movie felt rushed and sloppily put together compared to the first two.
Some foggy, dark roads back home.

1. I love things that make little clicking sounds, things that spin, or things that are smooth and/or soft. If I can use it one handed that’s a big plus.
2. My favorite color is blue, second favorite is black. I love reptiles and my special interest is dragons, but all animals are great.
3. I can’t handle strong smells, though light scents are okay. I also can’t wear rings because I have RA. I also cannot chew, due to RA also in my jaw.
Look at this turtle we saw while we were out rock hunting!
In other news, I absolutely despise PETA and people who support it. If you support PETA in any way, get tf off my blog.

My body is my temple. Ancient and crumbling. Probably cursed and haunted.
So I started Orencia last week and I already felt a difference the day after the first injection. The side effects have been super mild too, not like the others, which would literally make me so sick I couldn’t move. I’m really hoping that this medication will be The One, because I’m ready to stop hurting and get on with my life.

THIS!!!
The Continue Reading link is somewhat small so I just wanted to point it out i the OP so people don’t just stop at this point of the comic. SUPER relatable, but the rest is so important.
This is one of the many many reasons why I don’t fuck with anti self diagnosis people. Half the time, if you don’t go in with a thorough understanding of what’s happening to you and what you should be tested for, doctors will just write it (and you) off.
Why do I always have a flare up when I have plans/inspiration to do something???
You know how when you have chronic pain and you have to choose between being stuck in bed hurting too much to do anything, or taking pain medication that makes you be stuck in bed too tired to do anything? Not a big fan.
