``I'll do whatever it takes.
I'll make a million mistakes.
I'll make the world safe and sound for you.``
Thinking about how Ace was the one to suggest that he, Sabo, and Luffy become brothers and that he only chose to do that right after meeting Sabo's awful biological dad. Ace and Sabo had known each other for years by that point and at least a few months of knowing Luffy.
Any one of them could have suggested that they become brothers at any time but it means so much to me that it was Ace and that he did that only after seeing what type of 'family' Sabo had.

“Icarus.”
it's all about freedom really
Credit goes to An Sifakah for the poem. Enjoy!
Support me on Ko-fi maybe?
can i just say i really reject the take that i've seen come up every now and then that the revolutionary army is raising child soldiers?
firstly, the revolutionary army did not recruit sabo. dragon rescued sabo from certain death, and then when they voiced the idea of returning him to his parents, sabo cried and begged them to not send him back. he explicitly (per SBS 80) chose to join the rev army because he agreed with their ideals, not because they "recruited" him.
the scene where sabo is training with other children? that's not canon. that's anime filler. oda wrote some notes on the script, but we don't really know which exact bits he suggested and which he didn't. sabo and koala are the only characters we see taken in by the revolutionary army as children in canon. we do know that sabo and koala learned to fight at a young age, but frankly i don't believe that "choosing to learn karate in a controlled environment" is tantamount to being raised as a child soldier (or else i guess i was raised as a child soldier too). and there is no canonical scene that shows a child taking part in missions outside of the rev army base.
in general, not everyone who is a part of the revolutionary army is expected/made to be a soldier anyway. they are also an intelligence-gathering organization. just because they sometimes rescue enslaved people and those enslaved people sometimes include orphans and children doesn't mean those people are automatically being made to fight. the revolutionary army is all about empowering people to make their own choices for themselves. that's their entire thing.
the revolutionary army was also in some ways founded by children. dragon, kuma, ivankov and ginny were all under 18 when they first recognized the wrongs around them and wanted to fight back. i think it'd be hypocritical of them to turn away all young people who want to be a part of their organization. i do think they have a duty to those children, but it's also important to remember that one piece isn't set on earth, it's set in a post-apocalyptic authoritarian dystopia. the government is a very real threat to these people and they need to be able to defend themselves, regardless of age.
many members of the revolutionary army were previously enslaved, oppressed, and/or physically harmed by the world government. they can't just forget that, whether they're children or not. if they want to fight back and protect themselves and the revolutionary army provides them a safe environment to learn how to do so....i think that's good, actually?
the rev army isn't indoctrinating anyone. they rescue people (or empower them to rescue themselves), they tell them the truth about the world, and then allow them to choose what to do with that information. sometimes, those people may be children and they may choose to learn to fight for their shared cause.
that is NOTHING like the world government brainwashing trafficked children to serve as marines or cypher pol agents, and there is no evidence that the RA is intentionally or systematically seeking to create child soldiers.
He's so cute ughhhh I love drawing him
the god valley flashback is so funny and great to me bc it's oda being like. here are six straight chapters of non-stop drama and clashes between some of the most infamous figures in the series when they were at their prime, detailing the grand battle royale that was a source of decades of world government propaganda and shook the world.
and also for like one or two panels each chapter i am going to cut to a seventeen year old doing something extremely compelling that betrays a depth of character, conviction and moral fortitude unmatched by almost any other character in the entire series. anyway, back to the big battle!
like father like son
asl brothers as wealth, fame and power is something i find so interesting. it’s them but it’s opposite, it’s all wrong. ace & fame, something he was unwillingly cursed with due to his lineage and something he hid from until his anonymity was ripped from him against his will. sabo & wealth, former rich kid turned revolutionary who strives to dismantle the world’s leading authorities; their wealth hoarding and corrupt luxury. luffy & power, the boy who’s dream is solely fuelled by the idea of ultimate freedom despite the inherent power behind what he strives for. ‘the king of the pirates’ who scoffs at the idea of superiority or control over anyone. asl brothers as wealth, fame and power but it’s everything they’re not, and everything they hope to never be
more sabo law and vivi
they will team up in canon trust me
i can't help but compare dragon in god valley to luffy in marineford. because both of them are such small players among big figures (both literally and figuratively), and they are both risking their lives in the battlefield to save another person. and yet, the differences are so stark.
in marineford, luffy was in the limelight. everyone from both sides were focusing on him, either helping him or blocking him from getting to reach ace. in contrast, dragon was practically invisible. only the holy knights were briefly interested in him when they were trying to take back garling's babies. but even then, they didn't seem to notice the existence of a second baby. afterwards, nobody gave a single thought about dragon.
and i feel like this is such a fundamental difference in their personalities, and one that led to their diverging paths. dragon's unassuming personality helped him succeed in working underground as the revolutionary leader. people knew so little about him that even after becoming famous, he managed to hide his surname, connection to famous marine hero garp and the existence of his child. in contrast with dragon's ability to hide in plain sight, luffy draws people's attention everywhere he goes. so much so that the crew can always find him easily by going towards wherever the biggest commotion is. the first thing he says whenever he meets someone new is his full real name. and the second thing he says is that he's a pirate. he can't lie or lie low to save his life. it's only appropriate that his goal is to become the most famous person in their universe.
they are such polar opposites. shadow and light. inconspicuous and eye-catching. they have similar goals of freeing others but through two contrasting methods. they may even be two sides of the same coin. after all, a stealth attack and a distraction work best when they go hand in hand.
“Law in modern au would be a respectable doctor at a hospital-“ Law in a modern au would be in a back alley giving people cheap but high quality medications and the best gender affirming surgeries. He’d give somebody a hysterectomy no questions asked. You wanna be sterile and you haven’t had a partner or kids yet? Don’t even fucking worry bestie he’s already prepped everything.
Like your first mistake was thinking that in any universe he’d respect the government or private healthcare in anyway, your second mistake was assuming he wouldn’t be performing the riskiest surgeries known to man for sport and fun. Somebody jokingly talks about wanting to be a cat girl and he’s running calculations in his head on how and if it’d be possible to make that girl a cat immediately.
Don’t even get me started on every other law he’d break to give people affordable healthcare that he didn’t have access to, because even in a modern au I refuse to let people take away his medical trauma that shaped him as a character.
