the wordplay built into the names of project hail mary is fun for me, as an atheist jew who knows basically none of these christian turns of phrase

like, "hail mary, full of grace" i put together shortly after the ship's name was announced; haha the ship is called the hail mary and the only guy on it is named grace, very clever

and divine grace is about salvation, right? so grace in saving earth is providing grace, of a sorts

but i had forgotten about things happening "by the grace of god" until after i left the theater, and that phrase plus stratt's stated belief of phm succeeding "god willing" has me sooo so peeved. because whether god was willing or not, grace sure wasn't.

Someone said the killing of the villain in The Poet Empress was anticlimactic or something and I had to take a minute because I really wasn't sure who the reviewer was referring to as the villain. There are definitely ANTAGONISTS who are pretty villainous, but the point of the whole book is that these are people also failed and shaped by The System/Nation.

The villain is the concept of Nation, and how complicated that becomes, because you have to love the people within Nation (arguably what most would consider Nation, and also arguably the problem is when you Stop Seeing It That Way) and understand it in order to destroy Nation, even slowly.

You have to love it to kill it

It's the entire point of the book

But this person thought one of the princes (they didn't even specify which one in the review!) was the villain. And killing him was anticlimactic.

The (antagonist) princes are relatively interchangeable role wise, even if not on a personal level. That's the point.

Is Bridgerton worth watching?

Hi anon! My answer is it depends on what you’re looking for - it’s regency romance with a contemporary twist (as in, the characters almost speak with modern sensibilities despite being in regency era), so it might not be for everyone. If you’re looking for authentic historical romance, the show won’t be for you.

I don’t take the show seriously ngl, I’m mostly there to appreciate the visuals and costuming, and the leads are great actors as well, but the plot isn’t for me so I don’t engage with it very deeply 🫣 each season also features a different couple that can technically be viewed on its own, so you can definitely pick and choose whose story you wanna watch!

Let me give you, the internet, and mostly myself, some executive function advice.

Sometimes, when you find yourself somehow unable to do a thing you need or want to do, one issue might be that your brain has subconsciously tacked on extra tasks, and those tasks are making the whole thing too overwhelming!

Tl;dr: don't do that!

For example, I like to track the books I read and I've been meaning to add a few books I've recently finished. But my brain has added that I should also write a review, and the exact dates I read them (which I can't even remember) and oh by the way I should finish moving my stuff over to storygraph and before I know it that 1 task has turned into 4! And my executive functioning says no.

In fact, while I was getting the idea to write this post, my brain went "wouldn't it be nice to also write a post about y and tag them all properly and go back through my posts and find all mental health posts and tag those too" and wouldn't you know it. 4 tasks.

Discard those extra tasks. Don't even write them down. They don't matter. Strip it down to the 1 task you started with and only do that.

Sure, you won't have achieved some theoretical better end result but that end result was never gonna happen anyway. It was paralysing you from getting the initial task done. And maybe once that initial task is done, you can get to one (1! not 4!) additional task. Later. Not now.

Half-assing is better than no-assing.
