summary: “don’t wander around at night unless you want your soul eaten.”
Poe Thisbe is in way over her head.
it started out as a simple apothecary internship and a chance to get out of the dreary, soulless city she’s lived all her life.
upon arriving however, Poe quickly discovers that the little town of Wyachaveon is far more dangerous than she originally thought.
and to make matters worse, a chance encounter and a curse intertwines her path with Hao, a man who is said to eat souls, and the magical hybrid children he looks after.
but when disaster strikes, forcing Poe to team up with Hao for help, Poe discovers there may be more to Hao and the children than the village rumors, and more to herself than she previously thought.
favorite line at the moment: Poe swallowed thickly. “You can have my soul.”
Hao’s gaze flashed, the clean planes of his face disturbed by the smallest quirk of his lips. “I can have your soul,” he repeated musingly. “That’s a fair bargain, Poe Thisbe. But I wonder, does that truly mean anything to you?”

☾ WIP REINTRODUCTION — GUARDIANS OF THE GODS, BOOK ONE: T H E T H I R D G E N E R A T I O N ☽
GENRE: YA Low Fantasy, Action & Adventure
SETTING: The city of Starlite on the West Coast of a fictional America, and the village of Arus on a far-off planet
POV: 3rd Person Limited, with a preference for Bez Jackson & Snowella Garcia’s POVs
MAIN TROPES/THEMES: The Chosen One™️, fate vs free will, darkness and light, friendship, losing one’s innocence, magic, romance, demon possession
STATUS: First draft; started writing January 10th, 2021
CONTENT WARNINGS: murder/death, fantasy violence
☾ SYNOPSIS ☽
Like any sane person would, Bez Jackson had always doubted the existence of magic—up until she started having visions at the tender age of twelve. Seemingly out of nowhere, these visions came and began infiltrating her mind with images of a girl she had never seen before simultaneously wielding and being consumed by unfathomable magic power.
She was left to combat these cryptic visions for three years on her own—then fate stepped in and brought her face to face with the girl of her clairvoyant dreams: Snowella Garcia.
Soon after meeting Snowella and two of her closest friends, the four of them are thrust into a new world defying everything they thought they knew about the universe. Then a demigod grants them magical powers and sends them on a mission as humanity’s newest generation of Guardians.
Their task? To protect the descendant of an ancient Guardian from a woman seeking to use him as the vessel for a lost soul. The problem? Bez’s visions link Snowella to the soul this woman is hellbent on unleashing. The most important rule? Keep their Guardian identities secret.
☾ CHARACTERS ☽
BEZ JACKSON: The main MC with the Curse of Clairvoyance. She is determined to figure out what exactly is going on with Snowella—she’s just not sure if she’s willing to do it by any means necessary.
SNOWELLA GARCIA: The secondary MC with the Curse of Duality. She’s been aware of the existence of something dwelling within her core since before she could write her own name. As far as she knows, it’s a dormant power. Unfortunately for her, that just means it needs a catalyst.
ROSE PETULIA: One of Snowella’s closest friends and the kindest soul you’d ever meet. She’s known Snowella since they were five, yet somehow was completely unaware of the extra presence she carried until she was formally exposed to magic.
CORRINTHIA CLINE: Another of Snowella’s closest friends and an artist with a passion for fashion design. Like Rose, she’s known Snowella since they were young, but that’s as far back as her memories go. Strange. It’s almost as if her prior memories have been suppressed.
YUCA: The descendant of a Guardian that lived centuries prior. He is very intelligent, compassionate, and more than willing to lend a hand when asked, but like anyone else, he’s got a few secrets of his own.
THE ORACLE: The (Demi)God of Light and a symbol for righteousness, justice, prosperity, and life. They are often linked to the four elements—water, earth, air, and fire—and is associated with Blessings. But don’t let the fancy title fool you.
OTHER CHARACTERS:
Ms. T: the Owl
Daiko: the Scientist
Serbella: the Antagonist
Oliver Silos: the Love Interest
Elias Shepherd: the *Best* Friend
Cassandra Bluestone: the Lone Wolf

Writing Workshop 1.2
Mapmaking: Organizing Ideas
Last time, we discussed how to find The Question that forms the nucleus of the story you want to tell. What inspires you? What can lead you down a book-length writing adventure? This is what I consider the first step in pushing yourself toward a story that you can commit to and which you can enjoy writing.
But what happens next? We might have a Question, but how do we go about answering it? How do we break it down into manageable pieces that are not so intimidating that we can’t begin to write at all?
BRAINSTORMING
The first thing I recommend, before you ever begin writing scenes, is to make a list of possible answers to your Question. That is, what are the implications of the Question, what different directions can you take it, and what other questions come up as you’re thinking it out? There’s no need to overcomplicate this: simply write out your Question or premise, and use the 5 W’s. Below, I’ll give examples based on one hypothetical Question I posed last time: what if ocean colonies existed?
Who: What kinds of characters come to mind when you think about this Question? If you know your genre (this Question could be served by any genre, from fantasy to sci-fi to contemporary), some ideas might come to mind. Perhaps a scientist, or an architect, comes to mind as someone who might be necessary to make ocean colonies work. Who occupies the ocean colonies? Is one of these residents your protagonist, or does your protagonist come from the outside? By asking and answering some of these questions, you can pretty easily come up with a rough cast of characters that you might make use of. The point at this stage is not to settle on things, but to give yourself possibilities to work with.
What: Our what could be the discovery or endangerment of the ocean colonies, or the conflict they face, if any. Are the colonies the threat, the antagonistic group? What are the implications brought forward by the existence of ocean colonies? What possibilities arise? Write all of these down for possible use later!
When: This is part of establishing your setting! Is this set in the future in our world, or our present? Is it in a different world altogether? What is the scope of your project (i.e. does it take place on a small timeline, or a long one)? Sometimes this set of ideas comes better together later on in development, but it doesn’t hurt to get them down here.
Where: Given the nature of our Question, maybe this one is obvious, but maybe not! Maybe your story doesn’t take place in the ocean colonies! Maybe it’s about the discovery of them! What are all the potential scenarios and settings? Where are the ocean colonies? Do they exist in every ocean? Develop these ideas to give yourself material to work with as you write!
Why: These are the fun ideas, in my opinion, because my own Question was a why. But in our hypothetical case, why do the ocean colonies exist? Who made them? Are they secret, and if so, why? Go wild in this section, because this might be where you get some of the most compelling ideas that push you forward.
ORGANIZATION
Once you get all these ideas down, what do you do with them? If you use a writing app like Scrivener, feel free to make use of that! If not, I recommend getting used to having multiple files to store your many ideas on. Every time you work in more depth with one of the above ideas, start a new file and keep it in the same folder. This way, you’ll always know where to find things and where to check back. I have timeline documents, character profiles, many worldbuilding files, and so on dedicated to The Iridia Series, and I very much recommend the practice so that your toolbox doesn’t become too crowded and overwhelming. It’s important that you feel comfy in whatever system you come up with for yourself. Don’t use a program or system just because it’s popular! It needs to work for you. Try things out and tweak them, and see where you end up!
Once you’ve set up your system and done plenty of brainstorming about your question, you can start actually writing scenes! But don’t rush! It’s perfectly okay to spend time pre-writing, or getting these ideas down and organized. It’s an often underappreciated part of the writing process, but it shouldn’t be ignored.
Next time, we’ll discuss how to start getting words on the page that resemble a narrative! Hopefully once you’ve done this prep work you’ll feel more confident, but it can still be an intimidating task. Come back next time and we’ll explore how to turn a blank document into the beginnings of a wonderful story.
Stay tuned and I’ll see you in two weeks!

oh shit that’s me
imo the best way to interpret those “real people don’t do x” writing advice posts is “most people don’t do x, so if a character does x, it should be a distinguishing trait.” human behavior is infinitely varied; for any x, there are real people who do x. we can’t make absolute statements. we can, however, make probabilistic ones.
for example, most people don’t address each other by name in the middle of a casual conversation. if all your characters do that, your dialogue will sound stilted and unnatural. but if just one character does that, then it tells us something about that character.
