Okay wait this brings up a point Dr. Richard D Wolff (americas leading Marxist economist) brought up in a lecture a while ago; economics needs an ethics review board.

Every other major discipline has an ethics review board. If you're a doctor and prescribe a patient a lethal dose of the wrong medicine, you get disciplined. If you're a biologist and commit animal cruelty, you get disciplined. If you're a psychologist and conduct an unethical study, you get disciplined. If you're an engineer and neglect safety standards when building a bridge, you get disciplined.

But if you're an economist and your policies actively harm people in a demonstrable way, nothing happens. It's all just a 'matter of opinion'

American and other western economists advised the Russian government on how to run the country following the end of the ussr and its estimated that the economic policies they recommended directly lead to the deaths of millions of people. And not a single economist so much as even lost their job.

Economics degrees also need courses on ethics and the real human impact of economic policies so that economists can learn how to avoid harm in the first place.

One of my big executive function struggles is feeding myself.

I live alone (apart from the cat). I lose track of time when I’m involved in a project, and I don’t feel hungry so much as tired a lot of the time, which tends to lead to the wrong solution.

I hate taking five minutes to make myself food. If I have energy, it feels like I’m wasting time that could be spent writing or researching or whatever. And if I don’t have energy… FUCK. Even peeling a banana is beyond me.

When I drove to work, pre-pandemic, this often meant Dunkin’ Donuts for breakfast, Burger King for dinner, maybe head over to the bakery for a sandwich at lunch. I’d try not to do all three on the same day, but… I never had the patience to make food.

But now I work from home in the suburbs. There’s not a lot of places in easy driving distance, and only a few of them deliver. Food I get through Uber Eats or Grub Hub arrives cold. Always. I’m signed up to one of those weekly meal delivery services but they keep raising the prices and now I’m down to 4 meals a week.

I’m not asking for money, btw. I can afford to feed myself, I just don’t have the energy.

Now, in today’s society, this is considered lazy. Inefficient. How many times have we seen people saying working class people waste their money on fast food, and don’t they realize it’s cheaper to buy and cook healthy fresh foods? And you can say over and over again about the cost of exhaustion, but there’s still this sense of “no, you should be able to do this, just like everyone always has, this generation is just lazy…”

Not just from other people. Got that voice in my head, too.

And whenever it starts to get abusively loud, I just remind myself:

Working class apartments in Ancient Rome didn’t have kitchens. Apartment blocks (insulae) had shops on the ground floor, especially bakeries and places that sold quick hot food you could eat on your way to work, maybe with a few seats along a bar where you could rest for five minutes on your break.

Not just a few. These were goddamn EVERYWHERE.

We’ve known for two thousand years that people who work all day don’t have the energy or resources to cook for themselves. Longer, because Rome didn’t invent this, it’s just well-known there cuz Rome.

Anyway. I think if as a society we just accepted that “people don’t have the energy to cook but still need healthy food” is a real and valid issue, we could find some affordable fucking solutions. And step one is to stop blaming people (and ourselves) for not having that energy.

God, I can't tell you how much the "there's not enough enrichment in my enclosure" joke has helped my mental health. Because, for some reason I can't comprehend, pretending that I'm a zoo keeper caring for an animal (which is also me) just makes everything easier to comprehend. Like "Your head gets screwey when you're apartment is messy" just doesn't carry as much resonance as "The tiger becomes agitated when its enclosure is cluttered" because then I'll be like, no shit? This is worse. Looking at these you can tell they have no significant monetary value. They were confiscated as a fear tactic. Nothing more.

This picture breaks my heart everytime it appears in my dash. It’s a fear tactic, alright but—

The first one in the left corner: It’s a first communion rosary, and it’s not cheap.

The black one in the first line: That’s a widow rosary and it’s old.

The white one in the second line:  is a commemoration rosary. It has a miniature picture in the round part. I haven’t seen that since the 70′s.

In the third line, multicolor one: It’s an Anima mundi, I have only seen those in the hands of Rosary ministery’s old ladies. The oldest ones are from the 80′s after Juan Pablo II came to Mexico for the first time. It’s one of the old ones, I know because the crucifixes are different.  The third one on the fourth line: Red and gold. The style is old, the metal is dark, that’s a 50′s rosary, probably a quinceañera one (or it’s maybe older, from the 40′s when the brides carried red roses with their offerings).

The fifth one on the fourth line: It’s a quinceañera rosary with Ignatius’s tear. The style is old and in my part of Mexico is orphan girls who used it. At least it was when I was young. The third one of the fifth line: the blue one with the anchor. That one I have only seen in Veracruz and it doesn’t look new. The fifth one on the fifth line: That’s a 90′s wedding rosary. Black and white patterns were popular on that date. The fourth one on the last line: That’s a first communion rosary from the 30′s. It’s delicate and most probably silver. The rest wrench my heart too, the humble everyday rosaries with wooden beads and knots. Those are cheap and bear the wear and tear of their user handling. But those  I described are much more.

Those are mother’s rosaries.

Those are not just rosaries. Those are mementos, that’s the proof of their families stories. They are taking from them the only portable things they can carry to feel the connection to their families. It’s not a fear tactic. Call it like by its name. It’s dehumanization.

okay i did a little digging here, and i feel like this isn’t giving the whole story. this photo is actually from 2015, from photographer Tom Keifer’s collection El Sueño Americano / The American Dream.

Keifer worked part time as a janitor at a customs facility. he’s the one who collected all these rosaries; they were just thrown in the trash after they were confiscated.

it’s not just rosaries either, customs takes EVERYTHING that is deemed “non-essential” or “potentially a weapon,” including phones, wallets, bags, combs, hygiene products, shoelaces, and pretty much all personal belongings. and then they just chucked them in the trash.

This is dehumanizing, but not in the way you might think. these items weren’t stolen out of greed or a deliberate psychological attack, they were stolen because of a larger impersonal policy to leave immigrants with nothing.

i’d recommend taking a look at the other photos in the series. as an ongoing series, the rosary picture isn’t currently in the collection that i can see, but the ones that are are just as stark.

Yayoi-era polished stone semi-lunar reaping knives, used to cut ears of rice before the apparition of the sickle.

Those kind of stones knives could be found in many cultures around the world. As stated by archeologist OP, what is super interesting is that they are still used in some areas (last pictures is captured from in Chinese video and shows a similar tool made from iron).

Tbh, they look so handy I'd love to own one for foraging during strolls!

Ok so I’ve been playing for 18 years and i’m a string teacher. Can i just say how IMPORTANT it is for young kids to see a BLACK, MALE-PRESENTING PERSON playing, nae, SHREDDING on a violin? I’ve know maybe 5 black people who played stringed instruments throughout my schooling and teaching (predumably because i’m an upper middle class white woman). In districts where the population is predominantly black, funding is always low, so the instruments are crappy. Kids quit, or the program is dismantled. I’ve seen very few professional string players who are black.

Obviously there are black string players. We just don’t see them because they “don’t look like” string players.

This person is the real deal. They were clearly classically trained, and seems to have some fiddle training as well. How cool is that?

Sunmao (Chinese 🇨🇳: 榫卯, pinyin: sǔn mǎo), also known as Chinese joinery, or Mortise and tenon joint structure, is an ancient Chinese wooden architecture employing Chinese woodworking/carpentry and joinery methods that uses primarily wood, bricks, and tiles as the main building materials, with the wooden frame structure as the main structure, and columns, beams, and purlins as the main components.

“Sun” refers to “Suntou” (榫头, or 笋头, tenon), which is a wooden component that is designed for insertion, typically with a protruding or projecting part, and “Mao” comes from “Maoyan” (卯眼, or 卯口, or 榫眼, mortise), which is a wooden component that is designed for receiving a corresponding projection, typically with a hole or recessed cut. The joints between the various components are joined and connected by mortise and tenon, and fit together to form a flexible frame.

Sunmao is the most common structuring approach in ancient Chinese architecture and furniture. Sunmao structures, as a part of the “Chinese traditional architectural craftsmanship for timber-framed structures”, is a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage inscribed in 2009 on the UN Representative list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

“The Neolithic period (6000 — 2000 b.c.e.) marks the true emergence of the wooden frames so characteristic of Chinese architecture. As early as seven thousand years ago, Neolithic peoples knew how to use mortise and tenon — a method of joinery that employs notches and inserts — to build wood-beamed houses.
