yeah im afab (assigned fundamentally flawed at birth)
Reblog if you are a human rights extremist who believes that all humans are equal and has no sense of loyalty to nation states.
Misogyny is a major factor in the plummeting birth rate in the USA, not the only factor but a major contributing factor. Conservatives blame feminism when it is the extreme wave of reactionary misogyny making women rethink motherhood. This is a common refrain from a lot of childfree women, if they just listened to them, but they won’t.
women: a lot of men in my generation straight up hate women and it makes finding a suitable life partner very difficult. I do not feel safe enough to think of starting a family. I do not want to be permanently entangled with/dependent on a man who treats me like shit.
men: we need to hate women more and make them more unsafe and more dependent on us. this will certainly improve the birth rate. everyone knows that frightened and deeply unhappy women are the most fecund.
Political pet peeve but nothing being done is a "distraction" from anything else. Everything that the current administration is doing is an extension of American imperialism and conservative American values. Iran is not being bombed to "distract from the Epstein files", trans legislation is not being passed to "distract from Palestine", none of this is happening just to "distract" you. And dismissing certain issues as "distractions" is a horrific excuse of them.
It is, however, happening all at once to overwhelm you. And there is a HUGE difference.
Just read what has to be the worst Marvel fanfic of all time - EVERY character was one of the author’s OC’s and the only “ships” in the entire thing were the ones they spent like 600 pages in trying to find some whale called Moby Dick
LIES AND SLANDER the first 100 pages of this fic are a sweet "there was only one bed" story between the main character and his cooler harpooneer situationship.
this is going to have me on my hands and knees dry heaving
what the FUCK man.
You know how some people talk about timeless themes in literature and you kind of low-key think they're full of shit? Sometimes they're not.
the older i get the more it's terrifying to me how much child surveillance is normalized. scared for your child's mental health? here's more tools that will make them feel even more watched at all times. child is experimenting with their gender identity while away from you? we made it this other adult's job to surveil them for you. kid is "enjoying" their "free time" instead of doing homework? we've put parental controls on the things that they like so that you can monitor their private time. like can we fucking stop
i've had friends whose parents install "burglar cams" in all hallways and living spaces. baby/pet cams make sense but why the hell are you watching your 12-year-old via live video feed to ensure kumon completion like it's 1984 😭😭
"learned helplessness in gen z" is something i've seen some millennials complaining about online, especially in the workplace, and as a zillennial who is trying to overcome this issue, I think for most people it's a result of overbearing parenting. for me it's because I was so scared of my dad who found issues in every single move I made but the typical cause of learned helplessness in adults is most likely overbearing parents and THOSE parents exist because THEIR parents were probably the "latchkey" type that just let their kids do whatever. so basically we as humans like to learn from mistakes in parenting by creating new ones and this has been a problem for every generation. #MYTHEORY

My least favorite new politically correct term is "unhoused." Like you can just tell it was created to make liberals feel less icky when talking about homeless people.
I was homeless. I was homeless as a child and as an adult. That shit sucks believe it or not.
The uncertainty. The ever-present grimy feeling from lack of access to running water. Having nothing to your name. The shame you feel is asking your fellow man for the bare minimum. Just so much shame, man.
"Unhoused" is so clinical. A technical term. Sure, its not incorrect, but it doesn't properly convey the emotional and psychological impact homelessness has on you.
You say "house", I think of a structure.
You say "home", I think of stability.
yeah, it's not great. i worked on a project for school related to homelessness in my area, and for an oral defense received the note "the term 'homeless' could be construed as offensive". i'm sorry for my poor word choice, but the people i was speaking to were suffering and dying before my eyes for problems that my classmates' parents could have snapped their fingers and absolved in an instant (for reference, i went to high school less than an hour out from Atherton, one of the wealthiest zip codes in the nation, and also less than an hour out from SF, which has a notorious "homeless problem" despite housing plenty of tech elites). all they would have given up was a summer in bali and 100k on USC tuition. that cognitive dissonance between empathy for minorities and complete apathy when facing homeless human beings in SF is what largely disillusioned me from liberals
I just saw someone say “You need to read a book intended for adults.” instead of “Read a different book.” to a Harry Potter fan. Big fan of that.
The reaction to this post is making me realize I need to start saying this immediately.
100% agree. love of reading was intended as a bridge for the rich canon of literature readers were meant to find as adults. not a stopping block limiting grown adults from exiting the genre of questionable fantasy and juvenile fulfillment. i feel the same way about fanfiction broadly, actually. definitely has its place in a well-balanced reader's diet, but there is more to life (and books!) than ao3, and if you're not forcing yourself to do some measure of extracurricular reading in addition to purely pleasure, you deprive yourself of vast swaths of incredible stories, which are some of the best tools we have to connect human experiences and souls.
