Heteronormativity is so ingrained in us from childhood that little girls can’t even recognise when they have little crushes on other girls, and that’s why being gay is seen as an “adult” thing; only when you’re old enough to reason critically are you able to recognise the crushes you had as a child. There’s no such thing as being too young to be gay, but there is such thing as being too young to fully understand heteronormativity.
Straight people need to stop commenting on this post.
Rape
If rape was about how revealing their clothes were, rape rates would quadruple during the summer.
But they don’t.
If rape was about how much sex someone’s had in the past, then virgins wouldn’t get raped.
But they do.
If rape was about how attractive a person was by conventional standards, then only thin, white, abled people would get raped.
But they don’t.
If rape was about how much they drank, then sober people wouldn’t get raped.
But they do.
Rape is not the victims fault.
Things that, as a mentally ill person, I do not find offensive:
Using the words “crazy” or “nuts” or “insane” to describe something unexpected or incredible, such as “Mars has two moons?! That’s crazy!” or “Wow, those Westboro Baptists sure believe some crazy shit” or “that party was insane!“ or “You really think you can have unlimited chocolate by cutting it a certain way? Are you insane?” or “One Direction’s fans went nuts when they stepped out of that chariot.”
Using words like “lunatic” or “madman” to describe someone who’s behavior is fanatical, like “Why is that raving lunatic shouting about abortion at this soldier’s funeral?”
Things that, as a mentally ill person, I find incredibly offensive:
When you use the words “crazy” or “nuts” or “insane” or “lunatic” or “madman” or any variant as a way of dismissing me or people like me and acting like we’re not full people
The portrayal in the media of mentally ill people as not existing beyond their illness on the rare occasion we’re shown as existing at all
The portrayal of mentally ill people as dangerous, or more violent than mentally healthy people, or less intelligent and competent to run their own lives than mentally healthy people, and the fact that a lot of writers don’t seem to understand that “mentally ill” is not a motivation.
The fact that every time there’s a mass shooting or a bombing or an attack and they can’t scapegoat a religion or race for the crime, the perpetrator seems to grow a mental illness just in time for the trial, and people think that explains (or in some cases excuses) what they did
The fact that when people push for not allowing people who can’t use them responsibly to own weapons, they always seem to start at “mentally ill people” on the list of people who shouldn’t be allowed handle weapons, even though there’s no correlation between mental illness and violence.
When people say “you’d have to be crazy to (commit atrocity)” even though no, sane people commit atrocities all the time. In fact, most violent crime is committed by people with no mental illness.
The fact that I have literally seen otherwise-progressive people suggest that all mentally ill people be registered by the government, and perhaps required to identify themselves, and maybe imprisoned for public safety if the need arises. How would you have us identify ourselves? Should we wear a patch on our clothes, or just present our papers upon request?
But I think what really gets me the most:
When mentally healthy people call others out on our behalf when it comes to things on the first list, but remain completely silent about, or even actively complicit in, everything on the second list.

vulval vestibule (found in between your labia minora)
urethra (where you urinate from)
vaginal opening
-vaginas naturally contain a balance of different bacterias. this bacteria protects the vagina from external bacteria and fungus, provides natural disinfectants and maintains a healthy vaginal pH of 3.5-4.5.
-vaginal pH varies from person to person, day to day, depending on your cycle, your diet and many other external factors,
-all vaginas have a scent. all of them. no two people smell exactly the same, and you shouldn’t expect your vagina (or anyone else’s) to smell fruity or floral.
- if your worried about your scent, you can place perfume or an essential oil to an area around your vulva but not on it. some places like between your thighs or on your lower stomach, for example,
-your body secretes natural fluids called discharge. discharge is how your vagina self cleanses. it is completely normal and vital to healthy vaginal function.
-discharge can vary in amount, color, texture and scent depending on your cycle. each person is different. if your discharge is unusual or abnormal to you and your unique body - visit a doctor if possible.
-abnormal discharge can be green, grey, very yellow, smelly, itchy, chunky, etc.
-abundant discharge can be annoying. you can remove excess discharge in your shower by inserting one clean finger into your vagina, moving it from one side to another and ‘scooping’ the discharge out. repeat as needed. this reduces the amount of discharge found on your panties and in turn, reduces vaginal scent.
- dead skin cells and oil can build up between your clitoris and your clitoral hood, so it’s important to lift your hood up and rinse thoroughly so it doesnt harden.
-washing your “external” vulvar areas such as your public mound and outer lips is okay, though some may find skin here more sensitive.
-don’t douche. you may think it helps but it only masks any problems while causing more. douching throws of your flora, alters your PH and forces bacteria into your cervix.
-water and a soft, clean wash cloth is all you need to clean your vulvar areas that contain a mucous membrane. you do not need to wash these areas. applying soaps or cleaners to these areas removes of natural necessary lubricants and bacteria. this may cause irritation, inflammation, major discomfort and dryness. some amount of moistness should always be present.
-a vast majority of vaginal washes, even those touted as hypoallergenic, still contain dyes and fragrances which are known irritants. read the label.
-while Summer’s eve is a lesser of evils with a PH of 3.0 - 3.5 (still not quite correct), it is still a cleanser. vaginal washes are used to cleanse “bad” bacteria from your vulva. they also wash away the “good” bacteria needed to maintain a healthy balance.
-castile soaps (like Dr. Bronner’s) has a pH of about 8.9. these are not suggested.
-never insert any cleansing agents into your vagina.
-the information above applies to any gels, deodorants, perfumed products and wipes, too. these can all disturb your natural balance.
-while they still pose a possible risk of irritation, unscented baby wipes are the lesser of evils regarding “freshening up”.
-pay attention to your irritants and triggers. different people, different reactions
-everyone has different stances and different methods that work for them. if you aren’t experiencing vaginal discomfort or odd changes, you don’t have to discontinue certain product use. i do, however, recommend a trial period of leaving these products alone due to their effects on your vagina.
-allow your vagina to breathe. keep too-tight clothing to a minimum. cotton panties are the best option next to not wearing any at all. rotate the washcloth and towels you use to clean and dry your vagina.
-urinating after masturbation or sex reduces the amount of bacteria in your urethra wiping ‘front to back’ keeps rectal bacterial away from your vagina.
-naturally, food alters your vagina. balancing your diet in general and including things like pineapples, strawberries, yogurt, soy (the list goes on!) can influence your pH.

The Plains warbonnet is not a Cherokee thing. It is not a Navajo thing. It is not an Indian thing. It is a Plains thing.
Stop calling every silly thing you draw that even vaguely resembles a native “Cherokee” or “Navajo” or “Aztec.”
Stop drawing the warbonnet everywhere as the apparently definitive native thing. It isn’t part of all of our 600+ cultures.
Same goes for the tipi, not part of every one of the 600+ indigenous cultures.
Stop thinking that if a native person doesn’t have dark, “mahogany” skin, that their heritage is invalid. Even without admixture, we actually do have varying skin tones.
Stop wearing crappy fake warbonnets.
Stop wearing redface.
Stop using us as your silly mascots. We are people.
Stop saying “spirit animal.” It’s derived from a New Age bastardization of a something that actually exists in some of our cultures.
Don’t smudge. Cleanse all you like, that’s fine, but don’t smudge.
Don’t call us “Indians.” “Native American” isn’t great either, it is not our name, but it’s slightly better than “Indian.” “Indigenous” is also fine.
Don’t use NDN/ndn. That is ours.
Step off about our hair. If you meet a long-haired native, admire it if you like, maybe even ask them about it (RESPECTFULLY), but do not touch. The same applies for someone with short hair, but additionally for those with short hair, don’t say things like “oh you’d look more native/Indian/etc if your hair was long.” We didn’t all traditionally have long, flowing hair. Believe it or not, there are actually different haircuts existing in our various cultures, and aside from that ultimately it’s a personal choice, one does not need to have long hair if they don’t want to. Doesn’t make them any less native to have short hair.
Don’t pray to our spirits/gods/energies. Native spiritualities are closed, they are not for outsiders.
Don’t say “The Native Americans believed…” Firstly, the past tense is silly, we still exist and do things. Secondly, we are NOT A MONOLITH. As I mentioned before, there are upwards of 600 different Native American cultures.
Don’t ask about someone’s “Indian name.” That’s not only insensitive, the name you are referring to in that instance is something sacred, and might not be something that person wants to share with you.
Don’t call yourself silly crap like “howling wolf” or “flying eagle.” That’s also racist and insensitive.
Regardless of whatever you might think you’re doing, or what your intentions may be, if a native person tells you that what you’re doing is disrespectful, STOP DOING IT.
You aren’t honoring us. You’re just mocking us further, demonstrating your continued ability to treat us like shit and get away with it even now, centuries after our colonization began. Your feelings are not more important than our history and survival.
To those doing your best as allies, thank you, keep doing what you do. HOWEVER, don’t let opportunities to educate others escape you. By letting them continue to be ignorant, you are failing. Spread the message.

Finishing movies independently, let alone distributing them, isn't easy, and it's certainly never cheap. We'll be regularly highlighting special DIY films whose crowdfunding campaigns need your help.
While surfing through various gay dating apps, Jamal T. Lewis would commonly come across profiles with the same disclaimer: “No fats, no femmes, no Asians, no blacks."
In that sentiment, Lewis saw the racism, misogyny, and shaming of fat, effeminate, trans, and gender nonconforming people happening within the gay community.
To combat that narrow-mindedness, the NYC-based filmmaker has launched an Indiegogo campaign to make the feature-length documentary No Fats, No Femmes, an exploration of sexuality and desire within the gay and gender nonconforming communities.
"This subject has been deliberately silenced for years,” explains Lewis, who prefers the gender pronouns “he-she” or “she-he.” “This is an opportunity to amplify the voices of black and brown fat, femme, gender non-conforming, trans, queer, and disabled folk.”
The project’s structure takes inspiration from Marlon Riggs’ 1989 semi-documentary Tongues Untied, which combined Riggs’ personal history with choreography, footage from the Civil Rights Movement, and clips from Eddie Murphy’s homophobic 1983 HBO stand-up special Delirious. No Fats, No Femmes will be similarly experimental.
The opening sequence features a vogue-inspired hand performance coupled with Lewis breaking down how gender non-conformers have been silenced by mainstream gay attitudes:
Films about the queer community tend to focus on white gay male experiences—look no further than Ronald Emmerich’s history rewriting drama Stonewall, released earlier this year. As a result, the stories of those who exist on the margins aren’t often told. By writing, producing, and directing No Fats, No Femmes, Lewis is telling his story the way he wants it to be told. No Fats, No Femmes has the potential to bring much-needed visibility to those whose bodies, skin, and gender identities exists outside of the traditional understandings of gay sexuality.
“When our stories are no longer ours and are written and directed through another’s gaze, they become depolicitized and packaged in a way that’s easy to commodify for public consumption,” says Lewis. “I don’t want that for this narrative.”
For Lewis, writing about his own experiences will also reflect the gender nonconforming community at large. That requires an “honest vulnerability” that could easily get lost if No Fats, No Femmes were to be packaged as a film broadly about the gay community.
“It’s important for me to write and direct this documentary because I know best how to tell my own narrative,” explains Lewis. “I know how to best tell it without any obligation to pathology or disposability. That’s really important to me, especially considering that I’m not above the social critiques raised in the film—I’m deeply implicated.”
"I’m hoping to encourage more critical dialogue around race, desire, and body image,” adds Lewis. “I want to inspire a shift in consciousness, especially for black queer folk. I want people to leave the film asking those hard questions of themselves and their desires. I want them to get free, whatever that might mean for them. I’m offering [No Fats, No Femmes] to the world in hopes that it will one day contribute to black queer history in a significant way.”
