I thought I was the one obsessed with potatoes but it turns out that when you point it out people come with 82493 justifications about why potatoes (and it's always just them, even in my other posts few people wanted to talk about say, coffee in space) are always justified actually and you don't need to think about them

I'm trying to be reasonable here but when you really think about it it's funny, I'm just pointing out that potatoes aren't from Europe and people instead of saying "huh, you're right, maybe I should consider that fact for my future writing" are like NOOOOOOOOOOO BUT WHAT IF A WIZARD BROUGHT THEM, there's a whole other post about how "we can't deny our fantasy characters the potato" fair, I love them too, but why don't you want to learn where your stuff came from, why do you want for "wizards" to make appear them out of nowhere instead of learning there are real people with thousands of years of history who domesticated and created those things you take from granted

are you so scared of learning some of your things actually came from other cultures that were actually not Europeans who live in castles?

I think that the main problem here is quite simple. People don't really want to think. They want their "medieval fantasy Europe" (that is also some abstract "Europe" in the abstract time period from early medieval to XVII century) to be kinda... A roleplay experience for a reader. So the food shouldn't be too different, people and their customs shouldn't be too different. Author don't want to research actual historical information and enrich their texts with it, so they just write a mix of things they "know" from Hollywood films and videogames set in these periods of time.

(But also I want to read a fantasy where characters are like "look, there is a whole field of this new ground apple from overseas! Yes, I tasted it, it's really good. And everyone was saying that Duke %Name% was stupid for buying this exotic vegetable from foreign merchants". And reader is like "Are they fucking discuss fantasy potatoes?!")

what they don't tell you about learning to draw is that at a certain point of obsession you start to see everything as a potential reference. i frequently have to force myself to stop breaking the general public and my surroundings down into illustrative components during conversations and everyday tasks.

i wish i had the post on hand but a read i really like is vampirism as disability. you cant work a regular day job, in fact you physically cannot leave your home most hours of the day, you have specific dietary restrictions that alienate you from the social act of breaking bread, you feel condemned to navigate the world at its fringes, maybe your body wont change and develop the way it does for your peers, maybe your body is changing very rapidly into something that frightens people.

its tricky territory because i feel like the trope of the vampire as parasite is very dominant in the cultural consciousness and thats obviously not a connection i wish to draw, but like, you know who else the capitalist ableist world treats as drains on Normal society? in a narrative where the vampire character(s) arent being played as villains i think theres a lot of fertile ground here.

I think it would be a genuinely fascinating angle on writing vampire characters and an amazing way to discuss abled society’s tendency to relegate disabilities to “victim”, “parasite”, “monster”, and “pariah” categories depending on what they hope to gain from it.

“good” vampires are sympathetic and tragic, even sexy. “Bad” vampires are selfish and draining (literally) and ‘take up resources at other’s expense’, as the argument goes. Both ends parallel common talking points.

Hell, inspiration porn, unrealistic goals, fetishization, demonization, alienation, othering, the living ‘warning’, victimhood, survivorship, moralization- you could discuss a LOT about disabled experiences by using Vampires as the widely-palatable allegory and I kind of very much want to read that
