A hero without a cape
Her name is Theresa Kachindamoto, and she is a senior chief - political leader of a region with a population of about 900,000 people.
She didn’t run for election; she was appointed, without her knowledge, while she was living and working in a completely different part of the country. She just received a call one day telling her to come back to her childhood home, because she was in charge now.
So she did; and when she arrived, she discovered widespread sexual abuse of children. She browbeat 50 uncooperative local leaders into accepting her decision to annul all the marriages. She then fired four of them when they continued to allow children to be married off in their areas. She still faces widespread opposition from parents who consider it their right to sexually abuse their daughters if they want to; but Kachindamoto very evidently does not give a fuck, and is continuing to use political and legal means to protect children in the region.
She’s not just an anonymous do-gooder; she’s an effective political leader despite incredibly difficult circumstances. Theresa Kachindamoto.
Go Theresa!!
sapphism in my experience often circles back around to self-love and respect. i love women in all their beauty, all of their vast differences and what i admire and love in them i learn to admire and love in myself. i am often self-conscious but there’s something about realizing that certain features that i feel ashamed of, i actually love in other women and i start to appreciate myself and my own body more. wide hips, squishy tummies, big thighs, body hair, stretch marks, moles, whatever. it’s all beautiful and this is what i mean when i say being openly, freely gay is liberating and an act of self-love.
Sorry, I could never be a capitalist, I suffer from “wanting humans to have their basic needs met” disorder, where I care about people who aren’t me.
Someone once asked me if, assuming we got universal healthcare, I would be okay with the rise in “healthcare tourism” where people who are sick come to our country to get their medical bills taken care of and life-saving medical treatment cheaper than in their home countries. I was just like, yeah thats fine, I’d actually prefer it if 0 people died from preventable causes kept behind a paywall for no reason.
“even the addicts?” yeah dude did i fucking stutter
fuck the supreme court of the united states of america.

FROMIDABLE
As an ex-French-student, I approve
My personal favourite bilingual packaging (so far) is a brand of toilet paper that, in its description, emphasises how it’s made from recycled wood.
English: Tree-sponsible!
French: Respons-arbre!
[image: tweet by Wheeler: “Stop everything! Canada’s bilingual labeling just earned its keep!” image embedded in tweet is a photo of what is probably an off-brand spreadable cheese; fromage something, certainly. the packaging reads “cheese-tastic! fromidable!”]
ALSO! if you want to know why some of them think that this decision is okay and the so-called “reasoning” behind their votes, here is one guy in particular you can hate:
Twelve House Republicans broke party ranks to vote on a bill that would cap insulin at $35 per month for most Americans. Gaetz voted "no."
Some high-level ignorance in the notes, so:
1) lifesaving medicine should be free to all who need it
2) insulin is not expensive to produce
3) people with type 1 diabetes, a genetic autoimmune disorder and nothing to do with diet and/or lifestyle, need insulin daily to live, regardless of their diet and/or lifestyle.
4) weight loss can help many patients with type 2 diabetes manage their disease, but it is not a cure and does not help everyone
5) fat people deserve to live
Scientists chained themselves to the White House fence, blocked bridges and occupied buildings. Dozens were arrested.
"... “I’m taking action because I feel desperate,” said U.S. climate scientist Peter Kalmus, who along with several others locked himself to the front door of a JPMorgan Chase building in Los Angeles. A recent report found that the financial giant is the biggest private funder of oil and gas initiatives in the world.
“It’s the 11th hour in terms of Earth breakdown, and I feel terrified for my kids, and terrified for humanity,” Kalmus continued. “World leaders are still expanding the fossil fuel industry as fast as they can, but this is insane. The science clearly indicates that everything we hold dear is at risk, including even civilization itself and the wonderful, beautiful, cosmically precious life on this planet. I actually don’t get how any scientist who understands this could possibly stay on the sidelines at this point.” ..."
Apollo, if there were ever a time and a post,
HOLY FUCK THE AMAZON WORKERS WON THEIR UNION VOTE
im running so late to this but holy fucking shit this is historic
last thing - while unions are obviously a collaborative effort and this incredible victory is the result of the hard work and sacrifices of many different people i think it’s absolutely essential to highlight the role of ALU’s founder chris smalls rn
chris was fired by amazon in 2020 for organizing a walk-out in the wake of their criminal handling of covid protocols in staten island. in a meeting with bezos and other amazon execs amazon’s lawyer was caught bragging that he wasnt “smart” or “articulate” enough to organize against them…now he’s helped facilitate the first successful union vote in amazon’s history - eat shit!
Idc, if someone was making fun of MY wife’s chronic disorder that she is supposedly very sensitive about in front of thousands of people, I’d get on stage and smack the shit out of him too
I need people to know this isn't just some ha ha funny moment, this is someone standing up against ableism in the most direct way possible on national television.
Let's acknowledge that this was misogynoir as well as ableism. You cannot ignore the historical and cultural meaning of humiliating a Black woman for her hair, be it because of a condition or for any other reason. Especially from a comedian who's made a career out of misogynoir.
in any other story, merry would have died in battle or pippin in minas tirith, or frodo would have fallen or sam killed by gollum but tolkien, after facing losses in real life, said: no, this time they live. this time, they all get to live. in a way, the lord of the rings is a love letter to dead soldiers.
Also even like. Economically. It’s better to give money to poor people. That’s basic Keynesian economics.
Give $600 to someone with no money and they will put it back into the economy, buying groceries, clothes, accommodations, maybe some small luxuries. Give $600 to a rich person and it goes into their bank accounts and just stays there being useless.
If you give a poor person $20, that same $20 will be spent easily 10x over, by 10 different people, in 10 different businesses- within a week.
1- poor guy buys groceries at a local bodega.
2- the bodega owner pays his employees from the cash in the register.
3- bodega employee goes to Starbucks and tips the barista in cash.
4- the barista owes their roommate from lunch last week and pays them back
5- roommate buys something from an indie creator on Etsy
6- Etsy creator splurges on takeout & tips in cash
7- the takeout delivery driver fills up on gas
8- gas station manager (who got paid from the register) takes their kid to the ice cream truck
9- Ice cream truck driver buys a new tire and gets an oil change
10- mechanic gets lunch on a shift
….and so on.
Giving money to poor people is the single best way to stimulate and energize the economy… because poor people do something with money that rich people don’t- THEY FUCKING SPEND IT.
Giving $600 to a poor person is like composting food scraps. It returns nutrients to the economic ecosystem and supports the livelihood of others.
Giving $600 to a rich person is like tossing plastic into the ocean. It’s added to a massive floating garbage patch of corporate wealth. It disrupts the balance of the economic ecosystem, leading to consequences like economic ecosystem collapse.
In a healthy economy, money continues to flow. Rich people are bloodclots.
Billionaires are where money goes to die.
