It baffles me how some people are so aggressive against the mbti theory. I understand that mbti is an oversimplification of the human personality and behaviors, but I think it still holds value especially to the general public who have no psychological background.
I think it has some great uses.
I am a Te user, so I appear to people who are not close to me as serious and business-like even though I do have a good sense of humor and do fun things. When I was in high school, a bully told me I was too serious and shamed me for that. That got to me. I kept trying for years to appear goofy and fun to new people to prove that I am not a fun-killer. Guess what that did, it made me appear immature and silly because I was trying to be someone I am not. When I started learning about mbti I discovered that I am an INTJ and that I use Te for the external interactions. This part of me is a strength, and it has the potential to be charming. I am now no longer insecure. I understand myself, accept it, and am even grateful.
Mbti also makes you see that people think differently than you, it helps you understand where they are coming from. You start to get that some people are intuitives others are sensors and how that affects their perception and behaviors. You get that some people rely on logic in making decisions and judgments others use values and emotions. One person values convenience and efficiency in a certain situation, the other values group harmony and reads the room better in the same situation.
Understanding that people around you think differently and that does not make them wrong helps avoid a lot of conflicts and misunderstandings.
Myer-briggs mother daughter have no psychological background. However, all they did was take the ideas of Carl Jung, who was a psychiatrist, and organize them into a classification system and elaborate on them in the practical life.
