It took me quite a while to finish this part of the comic; I'm still not used to making so many pages and backgrounds, even if they are simple. But anyway, here is an interaction between Mike and possessed Will. It’s short, but I thought it was interesting to show this side of both of them, hehe.
More info: Will can’t control his possessed states; it’s something he never manages to master until the curse finally disappears. His emotions lean toward possessiveness (which is why he tries to twist Mike’s intentions and make him believe he’s actually in love with Jane).
Mike isn't in love with her—at least, he’s aware of that much. However, he doesn’t fully accept that his real feelings are 'good' (he recognizes his crush on Will, but it scares him).
Also, Mike was actually terrified of Will the first few times the possessions happened, but after a while, he accepted it and learned how to handle the situation better.
I was working on another extra comic, BUT I'LL POST IT LATER AHAHAH. I got tired with this one and really wanted to upload something since this account was starting to collect dust!

Considering Mike’s character in canon, it’s not surprising he’s behaving this way in the new animated series. Seriously, why are people suddenly shocked that “they are murdering miwi,” as if Season 3 Mike doesn’t exist? Instead of acknowledging that he abandoned the party and acted like a jerk, he canonically deflected and made it Will’s problem that he’s upset about boys dating due to his differences. He directly said this to Will’s face, making a frankly homophobic remark in the process, regardless of his intent.
His behavior clearly changed from Season 2 to Season 3, mainly due to his insecurities and obsession with Jane/El. This, combined with the “we are not kids anymore” mindset, led him to try and fail to play the role of a perfect boyfriend. As a pubescent teen lacking emotional tools and maturity, he clearly struggled to have a meaningful relationship and made it everyone’s problem.
In one of the comics from that time when El/Jane got back, they hint that Will already feels left out and that Mike is spending all his time with his girlfriend.
He tries to convince the party to go on an adventure together, but they are not very excited. As a result, Will lies to Joyce, saying he will spend the night at Mike’s, and goes alone. She even explicitly mentions that he hasn’t had a sleepover with Mike in a while, again confirming the effect of Mike focusing on his girlfriend.
I know people keep saying Mike is the one who understands Will best and makes him feel like he’s not a mistake, but that’s the idealized version of Mike from the intimate childhood they once shared. During the rain fight, the perfect image of Mike begins to crumble right there in the garage. You can see the hurt and shock in Will’s eyes. In the van, he’s still clinging to that old Mike, believing he can be that, but if we look at the events of season 4, Will was clearly hurting, and Mike was too self-absorbed to notice.
This cartoon thing does not surprise me at all. I know people will again say Mike is the gayest one, but in reality, all his actions stem from his tunnel vision for El/Jane. Let’s all hope Will can at least avoid another humiliation ritual.

But the truth is, Byler, I don't know how to live without you. I feel like my life started the day we found you in Mike's basement. Will rolled a seven and he told Mike the truth as the garage light flickered. And I knew right then and there, in that moment, that you were endgame. I knew you were endgame post st5 vol 1, and I knew you were endgame post st5 vol 2.
You're my superhero. And... I can't lose you, okay? Do you hear me? I can't lose you. You can do anything. You can have Mike come out to Will. You can have Will admit that Mike isn't his Tammy. I believe that. I really do. But right now, you just have to fight. Okay? Byler, do you hear me? You need to fight! You have to fight! Fight! Fight!!!!!

That in the opening scene of TFS, Brenner’s father disappeared on a rainbow ship the same day as his son’s birthday?
Just like how Will drew a rainbow ship with crayons he got on his birthday, which was mentioned in the same scene as the time his father disappeared?
Not to mention how both Will’s birthday and father both seem to have disappeared from the show all together in ST4. But despite no mention of Will’s birthday, on that very day another character had traumatic flashbacks involving their father figure? And even smacked a girl when told she can’t cry to her daddy… And this occurred within a show that highlighted both the anniversary effect of traumatic memories and how people often repress/forget trauma as a way to cope…
Also the brother of Will having already mentioned a traumatic memory involving their father and his birthday…
I’m telling you, something majorly traumatic happened on Will’s birthday involving his father and that memory has been repressed like hell. That’s why it was forgotten.
The Narrative Wants Will to Survive
Yes Vecna likely wants Will alive, but maybe not just him? Perhaps there is a higher being that wants to ensure Will's survival as well?
Thinking about this quote from David Harbour:
“We’ve been talking about this stuff since Season 1, I think,” Harbour says. “And [the Duffer brothers] do have a very specific idea of the thematics of this show and what characters are allowed to survive a world like that, what characters need to be punished, what characters can’t survive, because they’re not wily enough.” x
"Wily" basically means crafty/cunning/intelligent. But I just gotta say, there are SO many other words he could have used, but he chose "wily".
Will must be considered "wily" enough, since he narrowly escapes death several times throughout the story.
Someone wants Will alive. Perhaps that's the whole point of the story in the first place.
