i have for a while been using stepping on somebody's toes as a metaphor for misgendering. and i genuinely think that it's kind of a good one.

if you keep stepping on somebody's toes for a long time at minimum they're probably going to start really hating you and at maximum you might cause them lasting damage.

if you do it on purpose you're a dick. if it's on accident but you keep doing it that person is still going to be mad at you because you don't care enough to try not to step on their toes

if you give a grovelling begging apology after accidentally stepping on somebody's toes one time you're going to make the whole thing awkward, but not giving a quick "sorry" before moving on is still kind of rude.

So what I think is that there's this default belief in patriarchy that men are superior to women and therefore the "masculine" sphere is superior to the "feminine" sphere. And so, as feminists have fought to expand the number of allowable female activities, men (on the aggregate over generations) have retreated from those activities because they're now seen as "feminine", and so partaking in them is incommensurate with their belief in their own superiority. And, unfortunately, as this has progressed, this has resulted in a lot of men sectioning themselves off from, frankly, everything that actually makes being alive worthwhile. It's a misery spiral, and the only way out is to abandon male supremacy.

I had this plot bunny for a Dragon Age Veil Guard Soul Mate fic where the Crow who would become Rook was Illario's soulmate and was brought into House Dellamorte with expectations. But of course Illario is a fucking moron who is selfish and stupid and over confident that he can just bed everybody he wants with no consequences because his soulmate will be there for him.

He doesn't really care that he's broken her heart.

Meanwhile Lucanis is her dearest friend and after one particularly humiliating evening, she tells Lucanis, "I wish you had been my soulmate." They never cross the lines of friends though there are certainly feels.

Caterina is pissed because she likes the girl and Illario's actions with his soulmate cement her refusal to consider him First Talon.

Lucanis' soulmate name reads Rook so you guys can imagine the later trickiness of the situation at hand.

Fed up with Illario, I imagine our as yet unnamed Crow performs some kind of severance involving the soulmate bond which could cause multiple side effects that Illario doesn't notice until it's too late and our Crow is gone from the Dellamorte Estate - possibly Caterina sent her to be in House de Riva or Cantori.

Honestly I see Caterina being furious with Illario and not showing it but heartbroken at the loss of our Crow.

Anyhow, I'm on an Emmirook centric server and with Rookanis plot bunnies like these, I can only release them on Tumblr.

I don't think my parents are aware that what they did was abuse. in fact I think one of the reasons they abused me was because they lacked the self-awareness, introspection, and education needed to realize what they were doing counted as abuse. if they did have more self awareness &etc, they would have likely stopped. it is not productive to insist they woke up in the mornings with the intent to psychologically torture a kid for no reason, when that is self-evidently not the case or within their motivations.

I'm speaking annecdotally here but I think many cases of abuse are like this. I think when reckoning with the reality of how abuse functions in our society, you must come to terms with the mundanity of it including the fact that abusive people are primed to overlook the harm of their own actions through the shield of mundanity and (lack of) intent.

okay. listen. I try not to be pedantic about this sort of thing but it’s starting to get on my nerves. the wire mother offers milk but not comfort. the cloth mother offers comfort but not milk. if something is comforting, fun, or otherwise compelling, but lacks substance, that is the cloth mother. if something is boring or unpleasant but has substance, that is the wire mother.

the big finding of the whole experiment was that both food and comfort are not just substantial, but required for healthy development. in the 50s the popular theory was that mothers should touch and hold their babies as little as possible to avoid “spoiling” them, especially right after birth (which explains uh. a lot about boomers as a generation).

Harlow conducted his experiment to investigate this idea, and he found that physical comfort nearly eclipsed the food as a need in the baby macaques. They would go to the wire mothers only when they were hungry, sometimes even trying to reach the milk bottles without letting go of the cloth mothers, because they so badly needed both. Harlow’s other experiments showed that being deprived of parental comfort and enrichment as babies dealt lasting psychological damage to the macaques. and today we know that human babies can just up and die without enough skin-to-skin contact.

so yeah, to highly social apes like us, comfort and fun are no less substantial than food, it’s just a question of how quickly it will kill you to go without it. do not deny yourself the cloth mother
