thinking about chickens again. infodump under the cut

i love chickens i have so much information

chickens have identifiable calls that i consider to be chicken "words." they can communicate certain social things with each other. mating, egg laying, food, hierarchy, danger, and dislike are some examples, but theres probably more!

oftentimes, they will have mini cliques in the general flock. these are often based on breed, age, and appearance, but temperament has some influence.

they are extremely social and intelligent. they can identify their chicken friends and their favorite humans.

they're really hygienic. dust baths and regular preening are a cornerstone of their behavioral traits. chickens secrete an oily substance from a gland near their tail that they use to maintain and semi waterproof their feathers.

they prefer to have lots of enrichment activities. they love to play with fresh vegetables. it gives them a refreshing snack and some fun in the summer.

they often need dietary supplements as well!! ground oyster shell is good for the calcium necessary for hens to produce eggshells. small gravel called "grit" is also important. since they cant quite chew with a beak, they swallow food whole and it gets processed in their crop. the grit does the chewing for them. a chicken without grit often develops digestive illnesses

This Hercules Beetle was built in 1958 for the May Natural History Museum. It is 17 feet long and nine feet tall and made of fiberglass and steel. The sculpture and museum moved to Weeki Wachee, FL for a few years. In the early 1960s, they returned to this site.
