Misa de Gallo
By: Marti
I am amazed at the people in the church community that even though there is a pandemic they are still willing to go to church and give thanks to our Lord. The pandemic today has not been a hindrance to stop worshiping and praising the Lord. I see their genuine faith to God, not everyone can have much money for now because other people no longer have a job yet they still sacrifice other things they want to spend at least some fare just to go to church. I saw their great laughter as they prepare for the coming Messiah. There seems to be no problem for them and you can see it in their happy faces because they and the church are full of hopes knowing that someone is coming to give salvation to all of us. We can see their trust in the Lord that He is greater than our problems.
As the dawn draws near, Filipino's are getting ready to their yearly tradition of celebrating a novena in honor of our lady Mary in preparation towards the nativity of our lord Jesus Christ. As Christmas is getting near, one of the best gifts we can offer to Christ himself is through the praying of the holy rosary as honoring the his mother would make Christ himself happy. And of course, let us not forget toe do good acts alongside of not failing to recite the mysteries daily. Rosariumweekly shall engage you into a glimpse of a Filipino tradition that happens yearly in every month of December where they celebrate their "misa de gallo" as a way of preparation towards the eve of our lord's nativity. We will be posting some photo's very soon to have everyone a taste of what is it to be a Filipino Catholic in this month of December. On December 8, we honor Mary, our Mother. The Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception is a Catholic feast celebrating Mary's conception without sin. Even though this feast day occurs in the liturgical season of Advent, which prepares for the birth of Our Lord Jesus Christ, the Immaculate Conception refers to the conception of Mary in the womb of her mother, St. Anne. The dogma of the Immaculate Conception asserts that, "from the first moment of her conception, the Blessed Virgin Mary was, by the singular grace and privilege of Almighty God, and in view of the merits of Jesus Christ, Savior of Mankind, kept free from all stain of original sin." The observance of this feast began with a Papal encyclical by Pope Pius IX, when he formally defined the dogma of the Immaculate Conception, INEFFABILIS DEUS, on December 8, 1854. Several years later, in 1858, the Blessed Mother gave her name to St. Bernadette at Lourdes stating, "I am the Immaculate Conception." Source: Marywood University, The Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, December 8 Let us not forget to pray the holy rosary today as we celebrate the feast of our Immaculate conception! Faith and Graces with the Holy Rosary
Among the three municipalities of Bantayan Island, the Municipality of Madridejos is the farthest. In Madridejos, there’s a church namely Immaculate Conception Parish. In Lawis or called as the tip of the island, there’s a devotee of Immaculate Mary who never missed a mass every single day. Sister Lany, 46 years old, who always pray the holy rosary experiencing miracles in her life. According to her, she started her devotion when she became part of the church as Catechist and helper way back 1998. Sister Lany was the one who always change the dress of the Virgin Mary and the other statue saints in the church of Madridejos. Being in the church as server, she experienced many blessings as she finds it as miracles even in the midst of poverty. She said, never in her life she experienced difficulties without praying to the eucharist and to the Holy Rosary. As she always kneels down while holding the beads of the rosary, she feels so much joy and love that she can feel the presence of the Virgin Mary in front of her. As she said, you don’t need to see in your eyes the physical appearance of the Virgin, for her, faith and graces is so much more than anything else in this world. Sister Lany gave a testimony on her one the many miracles in life. She said, at the age of 37, she thought she would not be having a baby because of her age. However, because of her devotion and prayers, she miraculously gave birth with a healthy beautiful angel boy whose now her companion in going to church every day. Now, Sister Lany and Pao-Pao her son, serves the church, as she continues being a catechist and helper in the church while her son as an Altar Server. The two of them now devoutly serving the church as they continue strengthening their faith to God and devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary.
An Interview of a lay faithful of her life with the rosary:
1. Importante ba para nimo ang pag ampo sa rosaryo (Is rosary important in your life?) -Yes it is. It is not just part of our tradition as catholics or routine as a family but it has played a significant role for me as a student, family member, friend, neighbor, youth servant and a person. If you pray the rosary whole-heartedly it isn't just a plus point in heaven but slowly you become more like the Blessed virgin Mary. You'll learn to live like her, to live in purity, chastity, modesty, simplicity and humility. Temptation is everywhere and everyone of us is vulnerable to sins but when you are guided by your prayers and faith, you can become stronger and be able to resist these temptations. Praying the rosary has made our family even more united in Thanksgiving and praying for others as well 2. Naa kay kasinatian nga sa imo panan aw giniyahan ni Mama mary? (What are your religious expereince?) I have a lot but there are two significant experiences that I had just recently. First was when my aunt was confined to the hospital due to difficulty in breathing she was tested sa COVID-19 but we weren't able to get the result tho her doctor already said she's showing the symptoms. She was weak that time and most of our family members were also sick and experiencing fever so no one can watch after her except me whom they consider having weak immune system because I am asthmatic. Honestly fear was there but I convinced myself to be strong. I was there with my aunt, she was sad that time but she never showed that she was scared hence she stays in bed all day praying the rosary whenever she's awake. And I myself also prayed and it made a big help for me together with the prayers and encouraging from my friends and family. Unfortunately she died days later, we felt devasted but it didn't stopped us from continuously praying the rosary. Be out our trust in God and believed that she's in a better place right now.The second significant experience I had was last October, it was raining hard all over cebu. In our place in Kamputhaw there's a river and that time that it rained hard it over flowed, and reached our neighborhood, we didn't noticed it at first until my sister looked out the window and the water is knee high level luckily out doorstep was a bit high. Others started to panic but my mom stayed calm and told us to pray the rosary and the oratio imperata for the deliverance from calamities. When we were about to finish praying our neighbors began going outside shouting that the water level went down already. 3.3. Unsaon nimo pag awhag ang mga kabatan unan nga mag ampo og rosaryo. (How do you influence the youth to pray the rosary?) -Social media is everywhere. We can use it as a medium in preaching as well as encouraging the younger generations to pray. If we have opportunities to include them or let them join church activities or youth groups we can, it's the first step to bring them closer to God and soon it would lead them to the practice of prayer. My late aunt was very persistent in leading the kids in our neighborhood to pray the holy rosary, she bought rosary guides so they'll all have the chance lead the rosary. Right after praying she would snacks whenever she has extra money and even when doesn't have children still join her in praying the rosary in our small chapel. It's a little action but has great impact.

A devastating typhoon recently hit the islands of the Philippines and created a huge devastation in its various communities. These people needs our prayers and so we pray:
Compassionate Lord, we pray for those who have been devastated by recent natural disasters. We remember those who have lost their lives so suddenly. We hold in our hearts the families forever changed by grief and loss. Bring them consolation and comfort. Surround them with our prayer for strength. Bless those who have survived and heal their memories of trauma and devastation. May they have the courage to face the long road of rebuilding ahead. We ask your blessing on all those who have lost their homes, their livelihoods, their security and their hope. Bless the work of relief agencies and those proving emergency assistance. May their work be guided by the grace and strength that comes from You alone. Help us to respond with generosity in prayer, in assistance, in aid to the best of our abilities. Keep our hearts focused on the needs of those affected, even after the crisis is over. We ask this in Jesus' name. -prayer lifted from jesuitresource.org
We may offer too by praying the holy rosary to ask intercession to the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Typhoon Rolly
Typhoon Rolly is the most powerful typhoon to hit the country in 2020 to date amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. During the Halloween in November 1, 2020, the town of Malinao, Albay province, south of Manila was the center of the typhoon. What hurts me the most is that growing up in the Philippines and knowing the way we are, Filipinos are the happiest and most optimistic, even in light of the poor conditions that we live in. On top of that, Pandemic is still rampant due of Novel Corona Virus- means that people are still crawling from difficulties.
I am sure that a lot of people carry heaviness in their heart when thinking about this tragedy, and it’s incredible that others are doing good actions to raise awareness and support for Typhoon relief. One of it was the CARITAS Philippines who took an action to help the needy. Caritas is one of the largest church-based nonprofit organizations in the Philippines and its core programs are geared toward integral human, spiritual, and socio-economic development of the poor. Even in time of needs, church always gets involved in helping victims.
The Church teaches us always to pray, help, love, and support each other that not only in times of disasters and difficulties, but in our daily life routines. The church always reminds us to be grateful and be faithful. The Holy Rosary is one of the greatest weapons in disasters and source of grace for us to be filled with courage and strengths. Holy Mother Mary promised her children that “whoever shall faithfully serve me by the recitation of the Rosary, shall receive signal graces. I promise my special protection and the greatest graces to all those who shall recite the Rosary. The Rosary shall be a powerful armor against hell, it will destroy vice, decrease sin, and defeat heresies.”
PRAYER For Victims of Natural Disasters
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen
Gracious God, I pray for the victims of this disaster, Lord, that you would comfort the lives that were spared Lord, and that you would take care of those who perished.
Lord, please bless those who are doing everything they can to help these people and also make sure that things run smoothly in repairing this great community.
Please help the victims to have patience and also help family members to be reunited. Lord, I pray that you will ensure that the victims do not come under any illnesses from this disaster, and I also pray that they get enough food and clean water and proper shelter for everyone.
Lord, please touch the hearts of the world to continue to pray for these people and also to donate whatever they can to help rebuild this wonderful community.
Lord, only you can make miracles happen and I am asking for one now. Amen.
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen

All Souls and All Saints Day
by: Taxax
As I was performing my duties in our parish during the all souls and saint’s day, it was quite an opportunity for me to observe the piety of the people. I was touched by how strong their faith to God is and it made me happy to witness such occasion where even the covid-19 could not hinder. In their piety, they were keen enough too in observing proper distancing inside the church and the parish was also well prepared in observing the given protocols. Going back to the piety of the people, I was deeply touched on how their faith conquered even the tides of time. They chose to give respect to the saints and the souls of the departed than to be swayed by their fear of the pandemic. Their faith was deeply rooted that even fear cannot move it. Even though their faith was great, they were still careful in observing the protocols and did not opt to believe that God will do everything that wearing of personal protective equipment is necessary. Another thing that I had observed during that time was that the people were also devoutly praying the rosary. One of the promises granted to those who recite the rosary is that “special protection and the greatest graces to all those who shall recite the rosary”. This means that the holy rosary is essential because the Blessed mother promised that whoever prays the rosary will be given special protection. Especially during these trying times, we must hold on to our faith and pray the rosary every day.

The Culmination of the Month of the Holy Rosary
Fellow brothers and sisters in Christ? How was your October? How did you spend the whole 31 days of the month of the Holy Rosary? As we commemorate this day to end our 31 day devotion, may our religious activities that we underwent became fruitful to become closer to our Lord Jesus Christ.
Let us never forget to pray one Our Father, Hail Mary, and one Glory Be for the intentions of our Holy Father, for the Church, and also for our own personal intentions. Then we may end together by reciting the Salve Regina
Salve Regina:
O, holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, Hail our life, our sweetness and our hope. To thee do we cry, Poor banished children of Eve; To thee do we send up our sighs, Mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn then, most gracious advocate, Thine eyes of mercy toward us; And after this our exile, Show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving ,O sweet Virgin Mary.
℣ Pray for us, O holy Mother of God,
℟ that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.
Let us pray: Almighty, everlasting God, who by the co-operation of the Holy Spirit didst prepare the body and soul of the glorious Virgin-Mother Mary to become a dwelling-place meet for thy Son: grant that as we rejoice in her commemoration; so by her fervent intercession we may be delivered from present evils and from everlasting death. Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

St. John Paul II and Mother Teresa of Calcutta; Best friends of Faith
St. John Paul II, wrote an Apostolic Letter on the Rosary. No wonder he was entitled as “Great Pope” because of his works and prayers. In his Apostolic Letter Rosarium Virginis Mariae on a personal note, He reflect his devotion to the Virgin Mary and the Rosary, and his confidence in the power of her intercession. As he said, many of us "came" to Mary in our youth; others came later in life. He also added in his account how he knows Mary:
"During the Second World War, while I was employed as a factory worker, I came to be attracted to Marian devotion. At first, it seemed to me that I should distance myself a bit from the Marian devotion of my childhood, in order to focus more on Christ. Thanks to St. Louis of Montfort, I came to understand that true devotion to the Mother of God is actually Christocentric, indeed, it is very profoundly rooted in the mystery of the Blessed Trinity, and the mysteries of the Incarnation and Redemption."
Because of the strong devotion of St. John Paul II, On the year 2002 he added new five set of mysteries under the Luminous, and bringing the total number of mysteries to 20.
Reflection:
There was a special friendship between Mother Teresa and St. John Paul II, a friendship that will be continue even in eternal life. Mother Teresa and St. John Paul II, the man and the woman of the century, who together made and changed history. They were pilgrims of peace, individuals who were deeply in love with God and neighbor, supporters of the poor and the marginalized promoters of human freedom and human dignity. The fruits of works are from the source of grace of the heavenly Father and the intercession of the Virgin Mary, as what Mother Teresa and St. John Paul II claimed. Indeed, both of them became the model of current century in devotion of the Blessed Virgin Mary and of the Holy Rosary. Let us continue praying as what the two saints did during their existence in this earthly world.

St. John Paul II and Mother Teresa of Calcutta; Best friends of Faith
Saint Teresa of Calcutta, by her example and especially by her silent witness of clinging to Our Lady through the rosary – and by her words, taught her followers and each one of us to pray and to work in union with Our Lady. The practice of praying the rosary in the street became part of the Missionaries of Charity way of life, and the hallmark of the sisters as they made and make their way through the slums, going in haste with Our Lady in search of souls.
“The Rosary was her favorite and constant prayer. She prayed the rosary anytime, anywhere, but was especially fond of praying the rosary before the Blessed Sacrament.”- St. John Paul II to Mother Teresa Calcutta.

THE ROSARY & ST. DOMINIC
The Holy Rosary started during the latter part of 12th and the beginning of 13th centuries. It was through St. Dominic of Prussia and Alanus de Rupe who started the devotion of the Rosary. It was used as an instrument in combatting the great Albirgensian Heresy which ravaged Christendom, particularly in southern France. According to tradition, St. Dominic turned to ask help to the Mother of God because he was distressed at his lack of success in preaching in countering heresy. Mary appeared to him in the year 1214 and hold him to use her Psalter in conjunction with his preaching of the mysteries of our salvation.
The name “rosary” comes from the Latin “rosarium” which means “rose garden.” A rosary is widely considered a gift of roses to Our Blessed Mother in heaven.
Throughout the centuries, the devotion of the Holy Rosary spread over the world. Pope St. Pius V established the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary in October 7, 1573. Pope Clement XI expanded the feast to the universal Church in 1716. The dedication of the entire month of October to this devotion was officially established by Pope Pius XII in 1884.
In the 15th century, the mysteries of the rosary were assigned to each of the decades; Sorrowful, Glorious and the additional mysteries added in October 2002 by St. John Paul II, the Luminous mysteries.
In 1917, Our Lady appeared to three young shepherd children in Fatima, Portugal. She declared herself to be “Our Lady of the Rosary” and repeatedly urged the children to recite the rosary daily.
In the apostolic letter of St. John Paul II, “The Rosary of the Virgin Mary”, he wrote that “The rosary, though clearly Marian in character, is at a heart a Christ-centered prayer. It has all the depth of the gospel message in its entirety. It is an echo of the prayer of Mary, her perennial Magnificat for the work of the redemptive Incarnation which began in her virginal womb.”
Pope John XXIII taught that the Rosary must have a threefold purpose: “mystical contemplation, intimate reflection, and pious intention.”

The Mysteries of the Holy Rosary
We are now at the middle of the Month of the Holy Rosary. Had you prayed the Holy Rosary? Here is a cute illustration of the mysteries of the Holy Rosary which might help us remember them easily.
Ways to pray the Rosary:
1. Make the Sign of the Cross saying “In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.”, and say the Apostles’ Creed: “I believe in God, the Father almighty creator of heaven and earth and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell; on the third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God, the Father almighty. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.”
2. Say the Our Father: “Our Father, who art in heaven hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.”
3. Say three ‘Hail Marys’ for Faith, Hope, and Charity: “Hail Mary, full of grace. The Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women, And blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, Pray for us sinners, Now and at the hour of our death. Amen.” – 3 times.
4. Say the Glory Be: “Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.”
5. Announce "The Mystery" and then say the Our Father.
6. After the Glory Be in each Mystery, announce the Fatima Prayer: "Oh my Jesus, forgive us our sins, saves us from the fires of hell and lead all souls into heaven specially those who most need of your Divine Mercy.
Afterwards comes the closing prayers:
Hail Holy Queen Hail Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, our Life, our Sweetness, and our hope. To thee we cry, poor banished children of Eve. To thee we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this vale of tears. Turn then most gracious advocate, Thine eyes of mercy toward us, and after this, our exile, show unto us, the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary. Pray for us O Holy Mother of God, That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. Amen.
Let us pray: O God, whose only begotten Son, by His life, death, and resurrection, has purchased for us the rewards of eternal life, grant, we beseech Thee, that meditating upon these mysteries of the Most Holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we may imitate what they contain and obtain what they promise, through the same Christ Our Lord. Amen.
We may also add an Additional Prayer (eg; Litany of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Litany of the Saints, St. Michael Prayer, Memorare, etc.)

Rosary is a way of reflecting the mysteries in the life of our Lord. It is a Gospel in miniature, a summary of the truths of our faith, and a little school of virtues. By the frequent recitation of prayers and meditating the episodes in the life of Christ through the eyes of His Mother, we become closer to the Lord, and if we are close to the Lord, we make our lives more meaningful and happy.
