(The Rhiannon series: part 9/?) I’m not a witch!
Towards the end of the Rumours tour more and more rumors started to appear that Stevie was practicing witchcraft. Mostly based on her witchy songs like Rhiannon and Gold Dust Woman and her performances of those songs (press describing it looking almost like an excorcism) and of course because she was always wearing black. Stevie got sick of it and decided to wear a lot less black on stage. She had Margi Kent come up with even more different versions of the Rhiannon dress in a wide variety of colors, besides red and white mostly pastels.
I spent thousands of dollars on beautiful black clothes and had to stop wearing them for a long time because a lot of people scared me. And that’s really unfair to me, I think, for people ~ other people ~ to conjure up their ideas of what I am or what I believe in. - Stevie in 1983.
Because there was about a year when the whole witchcraft thing was coming in, and it freaked me out, ‘cause I was getting some really wacko mail from people, and I said, “I’m not wearing black!“. So I had Margi, my designer, make some pastel colors. And of course, I hated that! It was like, “Ugh, I hate this, but I’ll do this for a while to see if I can…calm this thing down.” - Stevie in 2019.
This is what a live version of Rhiannon, with Stevie wearing a pink dress, looked like in 1978: - Largo, 1978.
She didn’t abandon the black Rhiannon dress completely, it was worn a few times between 1978 and 1980 but it was a rare sighting. In the next couple of posts in this series I will highlight a bunch of different dresses from this era. Because of the stage lights and the quality of the photographs it’s sometimes difficult to determine the exact color of a dress so we’ll see how it goes.
