Hey so does anyone else think about Dew being genuinely really comforting when he wants to be?

I feel like he's able to comfort and help others in a way that only someone who's gone through a lot can.

- Phantom struggling with Swiss returning to the ministry, Dew silently bunking with him for the next week minimum. He holds the quint so gently you would think he were cradling glass. Its such a stark contrast to how he treated Bug when they were first summoned. All sharp edges and spitting molten words have cooled and turned into the gentlest warmth. Gently cooing and murmuring, "I know, buggy, I know," when sobs wrack their body, sending tremors through their chest. Petting him softly as they are finally worn out enough to sleep. He doesn't let them sleep alone and isolate like he did when Aether left.

- Rain having a hard time getting used to Perpetua, missing Copia desperately. He holds his water ghoul’s hand whenever Perpetua meets with them, before and after rituals, whenever Papa has notes for them about their performance or a question. Dew reminds Rain that V isn't trying to hurt them. He's trying to serve the ministry as much as they are. He remembers the whiplash and resentment he first held when Terzo had been replaced and doesn't want Rain to go through those feelings.

- When Storm is first introduced, he makes sure Cirrus is alright. She's quiet about it when she gets upset, and Dew knows full well how it feels to stew in those emotions. He tells her about how Lus is comfortable and happy back at the ministry, how Storm isn't a replacement, just a new addition. That Cumulus trained him and how she gave him her blessing. He holds her and promises they'll call her mate as soon as they get back to the hotel. He hopes she treats Storm better than he remembers treating Phantom.

- When Aurora’s element shifts briefly, when she has to pull on her Air to support the band, Dew is by her side. He guides her carefully, not wanting her to experience any of the trauma of elemental transition. He makes sure that she doesn't overdo it, checking in on her constantly. All too often, he's reminded of his own transition, and while he's healed and happy in his Fire, he wouldn't wish the experience on anyone.

He cares deeply about his pack and would do anything to keep them safe and taken care of. Something something it took a lot of violence to become this gentle.

the above guidance applies even if a fic isn’t warned/tagged. ao3’s tagging system is not 100% perfect and never will be. no manual system is. you will always have missed tags or — rarely, please repeat that with me — bad actors mistagging things on purpose.

part of being able to manage your own experience online isn’t just heeding warnings or tags. it’s being able to set yourself up for success when you encounter something triggering or uncomfortable in the wild. because you will. on accident, via malicious tagging, or maybe you missed a tag or forgot to read the new warning on a fic.

you will encounter your squicks or triggers in the world. your job is to BACK OUT of those situations as quickly as possible. read the room and make a judgement call.

is the main character about to get tortured and you have a thing about amputations? when they bring out the clippers, that’s your cue to dip.

if you can’t handle reading non-con, clicking on a fic with “dark” and “dub con” tagged is a risk, proceed with caution.

the author didn’t tag [trigger] but you’re reading the fic and have a bad feeling it might pop up.

the fic has “chose not to use archive warnings” and no other triggers/warnings tagged.

people in some online spaces will tell you that if everyone tagged their fic perfectly with every single trigger (instead of using “chose not to warn” which, again, is MORE than fair to use on its own) from the get go, nobody would ever get triggered again.

but that’s just simply not true. sometimes we don’t know we have a trigger until we encounter it. sometimes we thought we could handle something and we can’t. sometimes our trigger is so specific, asking the average author to tag it ahead of time is beyond impractical.

so yes, don’t like, don’t read. but also — don’t like, don’t continue reading. know your triggers, know what topics you can’t handle, and back out as soon as you see them. know that it will happen, inevitably, and have a plan.

encountering triggers isn’t fun. take care of yourself, recharge, and remember that anytime you prioritize yourself and your own mental health, you’re doing the right thing. even if it means missing out on a fic or two.
