Winter Studying Challenge Dec 4th - what is an unpopular opinion you have about winter?

even though I hate being cold I really enjoy going for a Christmas swim (I live by the sea). This year I persuaded some friends to come swim in the river Cam with me (yes it was snowing!) - it was actually a very refreshing start to the day and I got a lot of reading done once I’d warmed up ❄️

Winter Studying Challenge Dec 3rd - what is your least favourite thing about winter?

Anyone else in Cambridge will know I didn’t take this photo today - it’s a few weeks old because today was so cold and rainy! I don’t mind the cold on it’s own, but cold rain is not my friend!

Today was also my last day in the lab before I go home for the winter break. It was a rush to get everything I wanted to done but I was glad I’d planned it all out and I’ll be ready to get started with more work next term!

Winter Studying Challenge Dec 2nd - what is your favourite thing about winter?

I think winter can be very peaceful and still, and helps us all see the beauty in the world when it’s less busy.

These notes are from yesterday - I’ve been revising some of my lecture content from this term to start getting it fixed in my head. This is my final year so I really want to do well!

Winter Studying Challenge 1st Dec - do you like winter?

I’m more a fan of summer days and being able to spend lots of time outside, but I love the cosy winter evenings when it’s cold outside and you can curl up with a cook and a mug of hot chocolate ☕️ I also think Cambridge looks so pretty in winter - this is my college’s dining hall ✨

- waking up to cold mornings and condensation on your windows

- brewing a cup of hot coffee while reading a book

- wearing cozy sweaters and cardigans to stay warm

- draping your favorite long coat over your shoulders to create a mysterious silhouette

- stepping through heavy, packed snow as you walk to your morning class

- watching the glistening trees, pausing your podcast to admire them in their full glory

- combing your fingers through your hair to remove the falling snowflakes

- sipping hot chocolate in front of a roaring fire, turning the pages in your book leisurely

- stringing fairy lights to brighten up a dark room

- practicing your instrument in the evening, pretending to play at night - but the sun just sets early, but that’s not important

- relishing the long, dark hours to keep focused on your work

- listening to the quiet tones of claire de lune as you scribble through your essay

just finished my PhD application - now all I have to do is wait for college to send me my transcript and for a few supervisors to write some references! It’s a big decision but the more I think about the research the more excited I get 💫

In other news, I did a presentation on my lab work which I think went well - now just got to get writing up my data for my first report!

Second-hand dark academia

• A faded button down shirt that’s too big for you, yet somehow fits you perfectly.

• Buying an old book and inhaling the scent of the pages. Reading the previous owner’s annotations and talking in love.

• Raiding your grandmother’s closet and finding the perfect brooch. Wearing it everywhere you go for a week.

• The feeling of a shoe that’s already been broken in to someone else’s feet, so right and so wrong.

• Spending late nights sewing by candlelight. Chopin playing softly in the background as your needle weaves in and out of fabric.

• The feeling of walking into your favorite second-hand bookstore. The adventure of never knowing what you will discover.

• The leathery ends of an old postcard. You hang it on your wall and secretly read the note on the back, creating history for someone you don’t know.

• Your favorite teacup, chipped at the corner from some unknown mishap. It smells like English breakfast.

About 6 lectures are condensed into this, and I’m honestly so proud. I’ve never been super artistic but I love the combination of learning through creating and learning through seeing!
