it actually feels good as fuck to tilt your head at a slight angle when you don't understand something. the animals were right
This is a Moving Forward PSA for everyone using AO3. I am witnessing the results of a culture clash and communication failure. Not a lack of communication, but a misunderstanding caused by changes in fandom culture.
Before fic tagging was common, fics weren’t tagged. You had a pairing, if applicable, an author’s note about genre or general content, and if they were feeling charitable, a vague content warning. There are even a few genres of fic where even vaguely tagging literally spoils the plot and impact (such as horror, psyche thriller, in which the likely content is implicit to the genre). As a result, there is a basic category tag that permits this, as a courtesy to “old-fashioned” writers.
“No Archive Warnings Apply” means the fic is PG13 at worst, probably fluff, totally safe.
“Choose Not to Use Archive Warnings” is the polar opposite. It’s a glaring Enter at Your Own Risk billboard. It means: a shitload of warnings apply but I ain’t telling because this story requires shock value. It’s very important to read the author’s notes for those fics because they might be using that older format from above.
But without the context of fandom culture that generated AO3, it’s understandably easy to conflate the two categories, given their similar wording.
“No Archive Warnings Apply” means there’s no
graphic depictions of violence
major character death
underage
rape/non-con
“Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings” = HERE BE DRAGONS. (implies that one or more of the above exists, but the author doesn’t want to give anything away by tagging)
‘creator chose not to use archive warnings’ means ‘creator chose not to use archive warnings’. It doesn’t imply that archive warnings do apply, it literally just means that the creator opted out of using them. In practice it often does mean ‘read at own risk’ but it doesn’t carry any inherent meaning beyond ‘creator opted out’ and I don’t think we should be ascribing connotations to it.
Aside from anything else, it will be applied automatically if you don’t select any option when posting. So, it could easily mean ‘creator forgot to fill this out’ or ‘creator unclear on how the archive works’.

This is based on an screenshot from House of the Dragon. Self indulgence is making dragon shows crossovers. Happy birthday Ezran :) I hope we can see you again big and strong.
You guys see the vision...
Just because I’ve seen some discussions about the racial makeup of tumblr and tdp’s fandom, I thought I’d make a poll for the two of them together.
Are you White? (If you’re in the Dragon Prince fandom)
Yes
No
I don’t go here (Vanilla Extract)
If it’s more complicated than that, feel free to elaborate in the tags/comments, but since the sample size will be pretty small, I’m expecting it to be pretty cut and dry.
Also, please reblog for sample size!
To the concerned people in the reblogs: Nothing bad has happened! At least not majorly (you could argue that anything that has been happening has just been continuous for years) - the poll was made purely because tumblr itself is very White, and I had my suspicions that our fandom wouldn’t be much different. I know vaguely about the fandom’s history of racism, but I’ve only been here a year myself, so I can’t verify or really comment on that beyond the small stuff I’ve seen.
my cat hates taking his pills. the only way we can get him to eat them is to turn it into an elaborate pantomime - we take the packet out of the cupboard slowly and hold it up, saying “oh!! what’s this? what’s this? a TREAT? a TREAT for louis????” while making surprised faces. we offer him a pill… then, before he has a chance to sniff it, we wag our fingers at him and replace it in the packet so it becomes a Tantalising Forbidden Mystery. we continue doing this until he’s so confused and excited that he will eat the pill as fast as possible, just so he can find out what it is before we can take it away from him again. as soon as he’s eaten it he looks utterly disappointed and betrayed, like a child who just ate a delicious sweet only to find it was a chocolate-coated brussels sprout. it never gets old
Op this is the funniest thing I’ve ever read
op how could you just hide this from me in the tag this makes this objectively 10000000% funnier

Thank you for the map for context. It makes this 1,000 times funnier and intriguing.
friends
UM GUYS. I JUST NOTICED A CRAZY ISSUE W THE TUMBLR UPDATE.
YOU CAN SEE THE ICONS OF ANONS SOMETIMES.
The way I was able to recognize several anons in one of my inboxes bc of this error. Oh my god. Guys. This isn’t supposed to happen.
Weighing in to say:
YES, I SEE THIS ON MOBILE. HOWEVER I DO **NOT** THINK IT'S SHOWING THE ANON'S REAL IDENTITY.
The profile pictures I see next to anon asks are profile pictures that belong to other, non-anon asks in my ask box also. Some info
there are 14 asks in my inbox from the last ~5 days
9 anons, 5 logged in users
ALL 14 show pfps, including the 9 anons
ALL THE SHOWN PROFILE PICTURES BELONG TO THE 5 LOGGED IN USERS
I think the bug is the inbox INCORRECTLY attributing anons to neighboring, logged-in asks.
Which is still a bad bug! Considering it makes it look like a long-time follower of mine sent me a spam ask.
And is worse if, say, one of these was anon hate.
But it's NOT the anon's real identity. It's a neighboring ask asker's identity
So if you have anon hate in your inbox that looks like it's attributed to your dear friend, who sends you lovely asks all the time, it was Not them.
CONFIRMED THE BUG IS INCORRECT ATTRIBUTION.
Thanks @thepatchycat for being a test subject. As you can see the icon being attributed to this ask is NOT the patchy cat
The pictured icon belongs to @watchingforcomets who sent me a nice ask about nail polish yesterday which I have not yet answered!
