i think as a writer, the older you get and the more you read, the more you realize there are very few actual truly bad ideas. which is a relief. but! the other thing you learn is that stories live and die on the execution and ha ha. lemme tell you. unfortunately. there are lots and lots of bad ways to execute an otherwise fine idea

the more I learn about Project Hail Mary, the more it feels like it truly is a GENERATIONAL movie. and idk it just fucks me up in particular that it's made to be appropriate for school children to watch.

it's hard sci-fi. it has a lovable alien. it's about an apocalyptic threat against humanity. the main character meets his best friend. there are two corpses. the main character wears silly shirts. the super intense action scene is a research mission. the bad guy is a single celled organism. the male lead cries multiple times. a woman betrays the male lead, and nobody calls her a bitch. there is a depiction of assault, and the victim is a man. they could have included a single swear word. they didn't.
