If guys want access to shelters, build your own. Don't come beating on the door of a woman's shelter made by and for women. We had to do it on our own, why do you expect us to do it for you?
My favorite part about this was that you knew you were being a jackass, so you said it on anon.
A guy did build a shelter. He was harrassed by feminist groups, denied funding, had to shut down the shelter and committed suicide. So please, don’t give that tired excuse. Men need a place to go when they are abused or in need of help, and gender activists are actively fighting that. They can’t just “make their own” because of that. That’s why they often go to women’s shelters: to get help they desperately need. Not to invade women’s spaces. ~Neptune
Wait what? That’s horrible. When did this happen?
April 2013
I love how Anon is like “we had to do it on our own”, it’s like no, no you didn’t. Because the government fucking funded it. Earl Silverman TRIED to do it your way and get government backing but they wouldn’t budge a finger, so he actually ran it out of his own home for over a decade I believe, and because no government funding would be allowed for him, he ended up going bankrupt, had to shut it down, and committed suicide to make a statement about the dire situation that no one cares about men when it comes to DV. And he was damn right because barely anyone covered his suicide despite his leaving a note detailing why he felt his death would be the only way of making a loud enough statement. So no you didn’t build your damn own and your whole response was made to delegitimize this for men.
See also: Erin Patria Margaret Pizzey. Founder of the first shelters for battered women. After observing the women in her shelters, she came to the conclusion that a large fraction of domestic violence was reciprocal or even female-perpetrated, and that women were just as capable of violence as men. She suggested that a similar shelter for battered men be created. Groups calling themselves Feminist responded to this by killing her dog and threatening the lives of her and her children until she fled the country.
Refuses to be identified as a Feminist despite having done more to actually help women than any leader of the movement I can name, because “having experienced my mother’s violence, I always knew that women can be as vicious and irresponsible as men.” Currently a leading voice in the Men’s Rights movement, and continues to work for the benefit of victims of domestic violence regardless of their gender, race, or creed. Continues to receive death threats for this from feminists.
So yeah, when a woman makes a shelter for women it receives government funding and public goodwill, when that same exact woman makes an identical shelter for men she is hunted by “feminist” killers for decades. And you continue to wonder why those lazy menfolk are still claiming to have problems and how some people could possibly dislike the term “feminist”.
This deserves a million fucking reblogs.
People are quick to assume men can go to all of these shelters regardless, but when most men call hotlines they are referred to resources that help abusers, not those abused. When a man shows up to a shelter, he’s seen as a predator and a threat, and he and his children are turned away. Very few organizations take such people seriously, even though a roughly equal share of victims of domestic abuse are male. What implications does this have for the children of abused men? What does it say about the abuse they are then forced to face, because the world won’t listen to their father and help?
Silverman did everything in his power and even more in death. The claim that feminism is for everyone means nothing, because the laws they push through (VAWA anybody?) and the policies they enforce by political action are all stacking the cards against the good men out there. Marriage no longer looks appealing because you could face a situation where you have to choose between seeing your kids and being free of abuse. Because of predominant aggressor policies (the Duluth model) as a man I can guarantee that most partners I spend time with can accuse me of violence and abuse and nothing more than their word can get me incarcerated. When it comes to families, this hurts kids more than anything. Spending time in lockup isn’t the thing that sucks, it’s leaving your kids behind with their incredibly abusive mother. We don’t take abusive women seriously in our culture, so nobody cares. It’s wrong. It has to change.
Seriously. Every time some idiot brings up men’s rights groups not doing anything for men, yada yada yada, or how 3rd wave feminism ‘fights for men’, this is the shit I always bring up. Especially Pizzey.
ESPECIALLY FUCKING PIZZEY.
HER STORY HORRIFIED ME.
And most 3rd wavers don’t even know who the fuck she is even though she did SO MUCH good for women. But of course, the ones who do know about her don’t want others to. They don’t want the newer members of 3rd wave feminism to know Pizzey writes for A Voice For Men, and that she opened that shelter, and what she found out from it. Knowing that might make people QUESTION feminism, and GOD FORBID we start doing that.
My mother was an abusive piece of shit, and oh my god reading Pizzey’s stuff helped me come to terms with that and made me feel better. She is an amazing woman and does not deserve the shit she was put through.
“What are men’s right’s groups doing for men.” MAYBE TRYING TO GAIN A FRACTION OF THE FUNDING AND POWER THAT FEMINIST GROUPS HAVE SO THEY CAN ACTUALLY DO SOMETHING. LITTLE BIT DIFFICULT TO DO ANYTHING WITH YOUR WRISTS AND ANKLES TIED TOGETHER BEHIND YOUR BACK, INNIT?
‘Cause let’s be real, here. Despite what tumblr will tell you, it’s okay to not be attracted to fat people (or skinny people or anything in between). What gets your motor running isn’t really something you have complete control over. What you DO have complete control over is how you treat people you don’t find attractive. You always have the option to not be an asshole.
not finding someone attractive because of their weight (or lack of it) is having a type.
Treating someone badly because of their weight (or lack of it) is shallow and hurtful. You don’t have to be sexually attracted to someone to be nice to them.
You don’t have to be sexually attracted to someone to be nice to them.
Just something that’s been on my mind. Tumblr has this specific way of handling communities. These are just the ones that come by on my dash, I’m sure there are plenty more examples.
First they start out nice, tolerant, willing to listen and learn.
But they quickly become too nice and tolerant. Rather than simply accepting group X, they begin to overglorify them. They make them into something more special than people outside of group X, and coupled with their compulsive need to belong and feel special, desire to be a part of it too.
In comes the appropriation. If they can’t be a part of it, they’ll make themselves a part of it, one way or another. And is someone in group X not acting the way their fantasy version of them acts? Call them out on it!
They become so fanatical that they begin to talk over, or drive out the original people of group X.
And then finally they manage to become so hateful, their initial tolerance has turned into cold, terrifying intolerance. Calling gay/trans men privileged over white straight cis women, telling transsexual people to die, purposefully triggering people they dislike into panic attacks, defending Muslims to the point of calling the attack on Charlie Hebdo justified. And sending death threats to anyone who dares to disagree.
Being excluded from a group or community because you don’t belong there is not oppression.
It simply means that group does not describe or fit you as an individual.
If you can’t accept that, you have far deeper issues than your imagined ‘oppression’.
Inb4 tons of hate messages and death threats.

Life was easy.
i might actually cry
God damn time goes by so fast
Every day it gets harder to see
Who to be and how to be it.
Every night i swear to something
Be it god or nothing at all.
I'll spend these days in my room
Pulling at basement skeletons to decorate my walls.
Flooding my shelves and drawers
With histories I'll never learn from.
All these basements have lost their cobwebs
And it's time for me to leave.
I could use these hollow bones
To build a bridge between
Who I am and who I could be.
But honestly
I really only long for who I am.
If this is everything I'll ever be
Then it's everything I'll ever need.
Lose your way
Find yourself
Forge a new path through the dirt
Lose your way
Find yourself
Cover up these shortcuts
And old streets that once weighted me down.
This is a summary of college only using two pictures; expensive as hell.
That’s my Sociology “book”. In fact what it is is a piece of paper with codes written on it to allow me to access an electronic version of a book. I was told by my professor that I could not buy any other paperback version, or use another code, so I was left with no option other than buying a piece of paper for over $200. Best part about all this is my professor wrote the books; there’s something hilariously sadistic about that. So I pretty much doled out $200 for a current edition of an online textbook that is no different than an older, paperback edition of the same book for $5; yeah, I checked. My mistake for listening to my professor.
This is why we download.
