I probably won't ever write any fanfic abt Avatar: The Last Airbender, but I am lowkey obsessed with an idea I had of a timeline in which Aang doesn't get frozen.
Instead, he goes back home out of guilt, and ends up on the run after the Fire Nation ravages his Air Temple, and kills his mentor Monk Gyatso. He spends most of his life on the run, learning bending as quickly as possible while Fire Lord Sozin takes over the world, piece by piece. He prevents much tragedy, but at great personal cost: his childhood, his pacifism, and his family.
Aang is only one boy. A powerful boy, but just one person. Lord Sozin (and later Lord Azulon) are formidable rulers with powerful armies. Aang can't save the Air Nomads. He cannot prevent the horrific kidnappings of the Southern waterbenders. He tries. Oh he tries, desperately. But he cannot be everywhere at once. It eats at him. The lives of good friends and people slip through his fingers like sand. He avoids forming more close personal connections. His goal becomes saving the world, not saving people.
Roku and Aang's past lives worry about him. They're sympathetic, this was far too much responsibility to give to a child, and it's hurting him. But they can't do much to ease his burdens, only guide him on the right path, and nudge him in the right direction.
Flash forward many years. Prince Iroh (the then-Crown Prince of the Fire Nation, and their greatest General) is in the prime of his career. He's dad's favorite son. He's still charming and somewhat laid-back, but this translates more into his leisure time and love of fine foods than his spiritual philosophy. He is highly ambitious, desperate to etch his name into the history books, and cement his legacy. He pits his will against the greatest city in the world, Ba Sing Se.
He loses. His son Lu Ten still dies. Iroh gives the order to retreat, but it's less of a retreat and more fleeing for their lives, because the Earth Kingdom has a weapon they didn't in the original timeline: Aang.
Aang is old. He's a formidable master. And he's leaned into an almost ascetic life. There is little attachment to anything material, or social. Maybe this led to a near-perfect mastery of the Avatar State, or even the ability to fly. He's decided that his next incarnation can care about people once he saves the world. Right now, he has an obligation. An obligation to stop the Fire Nation's tyranny, and prevent them from invading Ba Sing Se. And to track down the missing Fire Nation General, and bring him to justice.
Iroh is on the run from both Aang and the Dai Li, he barely has the breath or energy to grieve the loss of his son. He is beginning to come to terms with what war cost him. What war costs everyone.
Aang finds him. He corners him and takes him captive. Iroh is determined to talk or trick his way out of this. Aang isn't having any of it.
And that's where my idea kinda ends? I think it'd be interesting to explore the dynamic between them, especially if circumstances force them to work together. I think there would also be interesting to explore what older canon characters were doing at this time, like Kana (Sokka and Katara's grandma), King Bumi, and Hama (the Southern Water Tribe bloodbender) and possibly bring them into the story. And make up some new ones! Like, what's the deal with that one firebending technique where you shoot fireballs with your mind? And what was
Anyway ty for coming to my TED Talk. I unfortunately don't really have any other Avatar posts. And if you want to turn this into an actual fic I don't care, do whatever you want.
