Steve becoming a baseball coach for the middle-schoolers, the sport Billy used to play when he himself was in middle-school, makes me think of Harringrove in their 30s, in which Billy survives Starcourt and eventually returns to Hawkins, after years of living in California and traveling the country, so he can be close to Max and her young family.

From the moment he arrives in town, Billy takes his uncle role pretty seriously and regularly picks up Max's son from practice when she or Lucas can't make it.

And if he happens to always come a little too early so he can hang around and pester Steve with unsolicited advice for his training methods, well clearly Billy only wants the best for his little nephew.

And if Steve grumbles that he knows what he's doing but still puts Billy's words to use, well it's only because his advice to plant his feet saved Steve's life, like, twice.

And if their co-coaching helps the Hawkins Cubs win the season, well maybe Steve invites Billy for a beer after the game. And maybe they go to Steve's place after the bar closes and maybe they sit on his couch and finally, finally Billy gets to kiss Steve and put his hands on that pretty boy he's wanted for so long.
