#lol that's right #what was it all for #the ring messes with your head #making you think you absolutely need this thing to fulfill your life goals #but other than making Smeagol live longer and be a menace we don't see any of that in the story #probably partly because the ring is trying to return to Mordor after so long lost #but if you don't know about the compulsion it really just looks like an awful deal #like a drug addict who's so deep into it they put it above food and water #but it isn't making them happy #or even feel normal #it just looks like purely self destructive behavior #but also it's funny bc it's the opposite of the rock that keeps bears away #like a real milk socket kind of idea #if you hold a ferret up to your ear you can hear the sound of a ferret attack
