This has been routine for ages. Ever since the Volturi became the de-facto ruling coven of the vampires, maintaining external relations had been necessary. But a vampire going out and about was not ideal, if they wanted to keep their species a secret.
A human buffer was necessary. So every once in a while, amidst the regular batch of human tourists lured to be the Volturi's sustenance, they pick one for the role— the one most willing to work for the Volturi in exchange of their life.
They get to serve the Volturi until someone more desperate arrives. By then, the bliss fades, and they return to their original fate—
But Neuvillette— Neuvillette is different.
It was not desperation that they found in Neuvillette's eyes upon his entry to Volterra— far from it. It was indifference. As if he knew upon entry the fate that awaited him, yet he did not care enough to defy.
When he was brought in front of Lady Furina's throne and was asked to kneel, he made no hesitations.
Furina leans close, her hand wrapping around Neuvillette's nape. Her face a mere inch from the pulse of his neck.
She opens her mouth, inhales. Indulges. She leans closer, and delights when she feels his pulse beat faster.
So a man, too, knows fear.
When her fangs touch his delicate skin, her resolve breaks. A phantom flavor blooms on her tongue— rich, deep, and exquisite.
"Oh, dearest," she whispers, breathless from the way her mouth waters. "Your blood sings."
