So I read Strange Houses....

and I ran into some timeline issues

So in the Afterword Kurihara heavily implies that the body found in chapter 1 is actually Keita's body and that he's been dead since July

So ofc I had to go back through and make a timeline of events and sure enough the disappearance of Ayano's husband lines up with the time that the neighbor said they all moved out of the Toyko house

but while events prior to the beginning of the Authors story (i.e. events prior to September 2019) are fairly believable I actually struggled to piece together a timeline for the events the Author is present for

let me explain

so the story begins in September and the body is found outside the Tokyo house on September 8th

and making the assumption that this takes place the morning after Yanaoka asks the Author to inspect the Tokyo house floor plan

that would mean that the Author's place in the story starts September 7th.

After reading the article about the Tokyo the Author says "Even a week later, I couldn't forget the house."

Putting the date at around Sept. 15 when his editor suggests writing the article

assuming 2-3 to write the article it's published Sept 17-18?

then the first email from Yuzuki is received stating "I saw the the article you published the other day."

the phrase "the other day" can mean anything from 2 days to 2 weeks but Yuzuki says that she basically knew immediately after she read the article that it was abt the Tokyo house so I doubt she's gonna wait two weeks so I guessed that it was only 2-3days after the article published

so this email is probably sent somewhere between Sept. 19-21

and that's where things get real clunky

He meets with Yuzuki "the next Saturday" which would either be the 21 or 28th of September depending on which day he actually got the email between the 19th and 21st

this is when the Saitama House floor plan is introduced

after the meeting he goes home and calls Kurihara again, sends him the new blueprints, etc.

"I was awaken the next morning by the telephone ringing. it was Kurihara."

ok now it's the 22nd or 29th, (aka a Sunday keep that in mind)

but

now it's OCTOBER?!?!?

but even considering the article/email time line I created is wrong and he met with Yuzuki on October 5 or October 12

which would then put his meeting with Kurihara about the Saitama House on the 6th or 13th (and still on a Sunday)

he gets home, writes an email to Yuzuki and decides he's going to visit the Tokyo house in the morning

Monday the 7th or 14th

and then his day goes something like this

11a.m. - Meets with Kurihara at his flat

- Kurihara reveals Yuzuki isn't married to Kyoichi Miyae's wife

2:45p.m. -arrives at coffee shop for 2nd face to face with Yuzuki

- Yuzuki admits she's part of the Katabuchi family

- the Author calls Kurihara and they agree to meet up

- the 3 of the discuss the Katabuchi house at a rental office

6 p.m. - meeting adjorned they all return home

8p.m. -Yuzuki calls and asks for escort to Yoshie's flat the next night (a fucking Tuesday btw)

but

how can tomorrow be Monday if today is fricking Monday???!

assuming for Translation error

it's Tuesday October 8th or perhaps 15th or even the 22nd if my timeline is that far off

5p.m. - meet up with Yuzuki

5:30p.m. - pair arrives in Saitama

5:35-5:40p.m. (assuming a 5-10 min walk) - pair arrives Yoshie's flat

Yoshie shows them the Keita letter. Shows them the Left Hand ritual documents but then, but then

it's NOT the 25th you know why?!?!?

because October 25th is a fucking FRIDAY

and we allllll know it's flipping TUESDAY

there is NO WAY ITS NOT A TUESDAY SO WHAT THE HELL IS EVEN HAPPENING RIGHT NOW

....

anyway other then those discrepancies I thought the book was pretty intriguing, I like be invited to analyze the clues 😄

I don‘t want the meme answer about how you should not read it because it will ruin you emotionally, I want the real answer. In my head it’s a really good story and I kinda have the urge to read it, but I‘m usually not an Angst enjoyer, especially not if there is no happy ending, so I‘m cautious…

So again: Is „In Another Life“ one of the best fics you’ve ever read?
