take it back
(wriothesley, kaeya, diluc x reader (separate)
â˘they take off their wedding bands during an argument â˘
"For meetings?" You ask confused, out of all the reasons he couldâve given you as to why his wedding band was left on his office desk in the first place, that's the one he gives you.
"It's distracting, people don't need to know." He states matter of factly, walking to his desk ignoring the hurt that flashes across your face at his flat tone.
âWriothesley, the only time I take my ring off is when I shower. A damn meeting isn't a reason to remove the one sign that shows you're married!" You turn to face him as he sits at his desk, heavy sigh leaving his lips.
"You don't understand." He answers in a dismissive tone as he turns his attention to the paperwork in front of him.
He knows he should've explained this earlier, how this looks in hindsight but he can't be bothered. Not when you don't have a clear head either. You're upset.
"What? What don't I understand? Try me please." You push, stepping up to his desk.
"You're not the warden y/n, you're not in my shoes. This is something else entirely. I suggest you get over it already." He warns, eyes never leaving his papers.
"What is the reason though? Why would you take something so important off ? Don't you understand what that signifies?" You question, deflating at the glare he sends your way right after.
"You know what?" He stands pushing the chair back loudly before striding up to you in quick steps.
âI don't have time to be arguing about this. No one down here even knows I'm married as a matter of fact. It's for the safety of my privacy and your safety all together. What's so hard to understand. What can your brain not grasp y/n? Why are you so stubborn?â He asks, though it comes out harsher than he intends.
His jaw clicks when he reads the time on the clock behind you. His meeting starts soon. He doesn't want you here for any of this.
âI'm a warden y/n. This prison is filled with people who are out to get me, I don't want to be seen down here with you, do you understand? Stop being so selfish, so self conscious and try to use that head of yours to grasp what I'm saying. What you're doing down here is reckless and foolish. No one needs to know.â He turns away when you don't reply, seemingly understanding where he's coming from now.
âI have a meeting soon, you need to leave.â he glances back, a knock on his door snaps him out of it.
A young guard steps through. âWarden the officials are making their way down right now.â The guard informs Wriothesley.
The young guard spots you by the warden's desk and apologizes âSorry I didn't mean to interrupt.â
âNo need, they're not anyone special. No need for pleasantries. They just came down here to do business and are on their way out. I'll be out there to greet them in a few minutes.â He dismisses the guard as the door clicks shut
You take that as your cue to leave, embarrassment flooding through you as you fully understand what he meant.
You can't bring your eyes to meet Wriothesleyâs at the moment, of course he has a good reason it all makes sense.
âI'm sorry, I understand now. I won't come down here again.â You clear your throat, gathering your belongings. âI'll take my leave.â You turn away but he stops you before you reach the door.
His large palm presses something small, delicate against your chest as he leans down to whisper.
âI forgot to leave this at home, take it back with you. I have no need for it here.â His hand moves and you catch the small silver band that he wears around his finger in your palm.
You only nod, unsure of what to say. You get it. For safety. But this is cruel.
Wriothesley steps back, before guilt can creep up on him at your silence. He opens the door and ushers you out, not even sparing you a glance as you leave, nor a goodbye.
You walk out slowly, processing everything. It all makes sense now but it hurts even more.
A few hours pass when Wriothesley wraps up the meeting. He couldn't shake the unease of leaving you like that earlier but he hopes you can understand where he's coming from, even if he was a mean bastard while telling you.
Though on his way out of the prison he's informed of an accident outside, someone leaving the prison had been attacked. He's asked to go check the scene before he leaves so he does.
When he arrives at the scene it's a mess of blood and belongings scattered as the investigation team does their work.
A file is handed to him and when he opens it everything stills, he feels sick to his stomach at the victims picture at the very bottom.
âWarden, these were left at the scene, we've tried contacting their family but no one seems to answer. The victim was left in cristal condition.â A guard hands Wriothesly a small bag as he explains the situation at hand.
His hands tremble when the contents inside are the jacket you wore to visit him and his ring, the very one he gave you before you left, covered in dried blood that belongs to you.
kayeaŕ¨ŕ§
âDon't twist my words.â His visible eye narrows as you open your mouth again.
âKaeya, that's not what I'm trying to do. Look at you, your arm is broken and your ribs are bruised! You won't give it a break, you know I'm here to help you right?â You hold his gaze, slowly taking a step to him.
He had come home injured. According to Master Jeanâs report, he had thrown himself in front of a fallen knight who was in a dire situation and it resulted in him taking quite the blow.
âI don't need anything.â He walks past you slightly bumping into you as he makes his way to your shared room.
âI'm not trying to argue with you Kaeya, I know it's your job but please it hurts me to see you this way.â You push, seeing his shoulders tense up in front of you.
âYour voice is hurting my ears.â He spits, making your mouth shut. âHow many times do I have to say it y/n. This is the consequences of my own actions, it's my duty to do so, to protect and serve.â He grits, his anger slowly getting the better of him. It's not your fault, not in the slightest he knows you worry because you care so deeply but his nightmares have been weighing heavy on his shoulders, the burden of a sinner is one he'd have to carry forever. He needs to prove his loyalty one way or another, anyway that shows he will never betray his true home, Mondstadt.
âI know, it's something I understand fully, it's just what if- how will I go if you don't come back to me? I can't begin to comprehend how much dread I'd feel if something worse were to happen to you Kaeya. Every time you leave I pray to the archons that you return home safe so forgive my voice for hurting your ears future but this is something i can't control either!â You continue, his back still facing you but from the way his shoulders stay tense you can tell he won't drop this either.
âI'm not asking you to care.â He whispers
âThat's not fair Kaeya, how can you say that so easily?â You ask him, ignoring the tightness forming in your chest.
It's silent, the air feels heavy and for a second you think kaeya will walk away.
âI didn't ask to fall in love with you.â He turns to you slowly. âIt's been the most exhausting thing I've ever experienced. My work is nothing compared to coming home to you, you don't shut up, you never give me space! Can't you see? Isn't it obvious I want to be alone?â He takes a step closer.
You swallow at his change of tone, at the way he easily says things that tear you apart without flinching. You didn't want your love to feel exhausting, you just wanted to release him from his burdens.
"You don't get to say selfish things like that. To tell me how you'd feel if I never returned. Archons sometimes I wonder why I married someone so self centered, do I have to spell it out for you y/n? Isn't it obvious that right now I want to be left alone, not cornered about my line of work!â He stands in front of your chest rising and falling with every breath.
You blink, eyes turning away from his now cold ones.
His words ring loudly in your ears, selfish, exhausting, you've been weighing him down without realizing. You care so much, you didn't know it was bringing him down.
âThat's not what I want to do to you, Kaeya, I'm not trying to make you feel worse.â You gather everything in you to look back at him, trying to fight the sting in the back of your eyes.
âYou are, can't you see? I come home wanting to find peace and I get cornered by you the second I walk in!â He snaps, your shoulders jump at his sudden outburst but you hold his gaze.
âDo you want me to leave?â You ask, voice coming out in a whisper too scared of talking any louder as if it'd break him more.
âNo need, I'll leave instead.â His eyes rip away from yours as he walks past you once more, you watch as he nears the door. Your stomach drops, he's injured and wants to leave. A wave of guilt washes over you as he stands in front of the door.
His throat feels scratchy, his words did enough damage for him to see in the way your whole demeanor had dropped, he's just the worst. The silver band on his finger feels heavy, it reminds him of everything he said he'd protect you from, look at him now, he's the reason why you look so deflated, he can't stand himself.
âI'll leave instead , you stay here at least-"
âNow you're holding me back.â His voice is flat , he can't see you shaking your head behind him but he can't bear to look back, he knows he hurt you now. He feels like he doesn't deserve to wear the ring, at least not right now, not tonight after he's said so much.
You see his arms moving around his cast as his fingers slide something off, the small silver band catches under the hallway light and you have to stop yourself from making a sound.
His fingers gently place the silver band by the stand next to the door.
The silence is suffocating, this is the last thing you wanted. You just couldn't shut your mouth and let him rest. This is the result of you being so overbearing, you husband can't stand you anymore.
Your hands shake at your sides when he moves again.
âDon't bother waiting up.â Kaeya sighs, pulling the knob to open the door. The silence behind him made him nauseous, it's not the kind of silence he wanted but he's said too much.
He just needs to clear his mind, leave and come back. Hell put in on tomorrow when he gets home, when his mind is in a better state.
When tomorrow does arrive eventually, the guilt he feels is immeasurable. He enters the eerily quiet house and spots the sight of the silver band he left before leaving. Next to it lies your wedding band, the only remaining thing of yours left in the house. The last trace if you left in your shared home.
dilucŕ¨ŕ§
âConvenience?â You ask, more so repeating what he said to you to make sure you heard correctly.
âYou're making something out of nothing y/n.â Diluc exhales a long sigh walking into his office, you follow close behind.
âDon't- no you can't say it's nothing. How would you react if you heard me say something so mean?" You challenge him as he removes his gloves from his hands, the silver band shining as he reaches to flick the wick of the candle that sits on his desk with the tips of his fingers.
You didn't mean to eavesdrop, you just so happened to hear him say marrying you was nothing more than you being convenient when you stopped by the tavern to walk home with him. It made you stop dead in your tracks, he said it so naturally too, like he's felt that way since the beginning, and here you were playing the stupid significant other thinking you had a more important role in his life.
âWhat's so convenient about me Diluc? They asked why you married me, you could've said anything but that's what you choose to say?â You ask, closing his office door behind you then walking up to his desk.
âWell as of right now I can't name anything convenient about you.â He turns to you, his amber eyes glaring at you in a way that makes his office turn cold.
You stare at him, swallowing the forming lump at his harsh words, âIs that truly how you feel?â you question, his glare sharpens though.
âIt's no one's business as to why I married you. You sure know how to overreact about everything. Besides, it's not as if it would be great to brag about you either. If someone spent a day in my place they'd say the same thing too, having such an exhausting and insecure partner isn't convenient at all i suppose.â His eyes, which are usually so gentle, look so different from the way they stare at you from across his desk.
âWould it just be better for me to remove any sign of me being connected to you at all instead? Would that make it more convenient for me?â he asks, fingers dragging the silver band off as he steps closer, testing you.
You swallow hard, you've never seen this side of diluc, the man standing before you wasn't your the man who read his vows to you, this isn't the mad you married.
âIf that's what you need to do then what's stopping you? If that ring is troubling you, I suggest you do what you see best fit.â you hold your head high, choosing not to let any emotion waver, eyes never leaving him as you keep your emotions at bay.
âIs that so?â He asks, he knows he should stop but he's been so pent up, so pinned in place with work he's out if it.
His hand slams down on his desk making you jump from where you stand at the sudden loud sound.
âTake it and leave, I have work to do, if you want to be convenient for once I suggest you leave me alone.â He runs a frustrated hand through his hair, he can't seem to stop, he knows he should.
He's not even mad at you, he's just taking it out on you because he can't hold it in, he knows this is wrong.
You stare at him, your husband- no the man before you seems so foreign. You had taken his frustration as him just feeling overworked but this is something else entirely, this is something deeper.
He won't even look at you, he's slammed his ring down on his desk and told you to leave yet he seems unfazed by his own words. Your arms feel heavy as you stay still, is he telling me to leave? Is this it? Is he finally tired of me? You can't help but think.
Though you standing there angers the man more, his head snaps up he's had enough of this he just needs to be alone.
You slowly move to grab the small band, trying to stop the slight tremble your body gives.
âFor archons sake I said leave-â His hand rises pointing at the door behind you though that would be something he comes to regret sooner than later.
His outburst should never have happened, none of this was your fault.
The candle sitting on his desk flares as his hand raises, in his heated state of mind his element triggers the flame to engulf right near where you stand, right next to the ring he slammed on the table.
It's like he gains control of his body again, like his mind snaps back to reality the second he sees you clutch your freshly burned arm to your chest. When his eyes meet yours again they're no longer pleading, they're scared. You're scared of your husband.

âąvarka returns from his expodition, but in attempt to keep your relationshio a secret from prying eyes, to keep you safe he ignores you thinking it's for the betterâ°
The celebration for the return of the expedition team was grand. Parents waiting for their children, husbands and wives waiting for their significant others, you were no different. Standing in the crowd you await the return of the Grandmaster of the Knights of Favonious, Varka, your husband.
Hearing the knights from afar singing the song of their homeland brought many to tears. Their footsteps echoing as they inch closer to home.
The people only roared once the team was seen crossing the bridge, people made way, a path for their loved ones to pass through as they gathered around the sidewalks of the streets.
Clutching the arrangement of Mondstadt's local flowers closer you see him. His tall frame catches the eye of all, a blonde head of hair seen walking behind his team, making sure everyone enters safely, always putting others before himself.
Nervousness pits itself in your stomach, your husband left six months ago and he's finally back. You want to run to him, tell him how much you've missed him, hear his voice but you know better. You couldn't greet him the way you desperately wished to, he wouldn't allow it.
As Varka passes, the people of Mond give their grandmaster many things, wine, flowers, food, chocolates, delicacies. You stand there watching in awe as he smiles at everyone, happy to be home.
He inches closer but his eyes seem to avoid yours, he's doing it again. It was foolish of you to think he'd let it slide just this once.
You hold out the boquete, hoping he'd at least take it, no interaction needed but he brushes past you instead, not even sparing you a glance. After months of not seeing your husband, he still pretends you're invisible to the public eye.
Foolish of you indeed.
Heat rushes to your face, embarrassed by being so openly ignored, your eyes stay glued to him as he makes his way up the city to the Knightâs headquarters.
Staring at his back as he gets further away, not even thinking once to turn around. Not even looking your way.
Your gaze slowly drifts around seeing the people from his expedition split up, hugging their loved ones, crying into their embrace at how they've missed them so. The scene in front of you is so beautiful you almost feel what they feel. But you don't.
The nervousness from earlier turns into something else, you were nervous for no reason whatsoever. He wouldn't greet you no matter what, your relationship was private it's been that way since the beginning.
Many people always ask Varka why he hadn't settled down yet. Why he hasn't married or why he has no significant other.
Very few know he already has, he's been married to you for a few years but few of his trusted companions know, in fact he prefers to keep it that way.
It keeps you out of danger, if anyone wants to target him they can go for him and him only.
So it often means no public dates, displays of affection or anything making you seem too familiar with each other.
Though it hurts you know it's for the better. Or so you thought.
In the beginning it made sense, him being the Grandmaster of the Knights and you being chief in command of the medical unit, he said it would bleed into your work life. It can make you a target for people that want him hurt. They'd hurt you and he can't live with the thought so he kept it hidden, safe. You believed him, he cared and it was sweet.
But now it just hurts.
Blatantly ignoring you was completely different from keeping you safe.
Bleeding into your work life wasn't a problem with anyone else, wouldn't people be happy for him, for you both? You don't care about your work position if it mean you had to distance yourself in public with him.
It had made sense back then but now, it doesn't. Not when he won't even glance your way, accept your flowers at the very least. He could've just grabbed them, thank you and moved on. Instead he acted like you didn't exist. Like you weren't even there. Like you weren't his wife.
Was keeping this front up worth it if it meant it would hurt this much?
Playing hurt now seems useless, you've let it happen before but this time stings more. It's been months and he still chose to walk away, not even acknowledge your presence.
It takes a few minutes, you stay put but finally decide to move. Decide that you weren't getting what you had hoped for, realizing now how this was set up from the start. Was this pain worth it? Worth keeping it a secret still?
Going home you think it over, you can't seem to let this pass like other times, this one hurts deep. It makes your hands shake with uncertainty, is this ok?
An hour passes, you tidy up hoping maybe he'd realize he went too far and come home, apologize, stay with you. Be present.
Three hours pass, you decide to put the flowers you got him in a vase at least. To not let such a beautiful arrangemt go to waste, be forgotten.
Five hours pass when dinner is ready, you keep in the the oven to stay warm, just the way he likes it.
The sun sets through your soft kitchen curtains as your head rests on the table, shame seeping into your bones.
The clock ticks and each time he's done this seems to play in your head, seems to reel you in and you realize just how this wasn't ok from the start.
Your reputation means nothing if Varka won't be in your life, is his reputation so much more important he would ignore you in public, choose to keep working instead of coming home to you?
Reports are never done for the Grandmaster, even if he just got back home from a half year expedition.
Glancing at the grand clock for the hundredth time Jean sighs, âYou're all done Captain Varka, you can go home and see her now.â she almost laughs when the man almost knocks the table in front of him over when he stands, that brought his energy back.
âSorry, didn't mean to be a buzz kill, I'm glad to be back, I just want nothing more than to go home to see my wife.â He chuckles fixing the papers he messed up, the few who know of your marriage always hear him ramble on how much he misses you each time he's away. âThank you Jean, for keeping everything in check while I was gone. You did fantastic. I'll be back in the morning.â He smiles appreciating how lenient she was being despite most likely being exhausted herslef.
âMake sure you go straight home, y/n has been waiting for your arrival more than anyone else here.â Jean whispers loud enough for him to hear as his hand turns the knob.
âAs I have been waiting to see her.â He assures, soft smile on his face.
He had known what he did earlier may have gone overboard but he knows you'll understand, you always are so understanding with him, so patient.
During his expedition you're all that was on his mind, he'd been worried sick but Jean was one of the few people to know about your marriage and she always checked up on you. Subtly hinting at how you were doing every time she wrote her reports back to him.
He's longed for you, your laughter, your smile, your touch. Truly the man was affected greatly by your absence, he wants nothing more than to see you.
Entering your shared house he instantly relaxes, soft lights flooding in from the kitchen lead him to where you're sitting at the table, though your head is down.
He feels an overwhelming sense of adoration at the sight. Walking up to where you're seated he kneels, softly moving your hair to the side.
âI'm back home my love.â He whispers, he's imagined this scenario so many times since he's been away. He didn't think he could contain himself, he wants to scoop you into his arms and smother you.
It takes you a second to register who was next to you, his familiar scent flooding your senses making your eyes burn.
You can't find it in you to want to look at him.
âYou've been home a while, but welcome back.â You speak, throat far too dry for your liking.
He blinks, he catches on though. You sound hurt.
He chuckles, a deep vibration radiating from his chest. The sound you've missed so much sounded mocking at this moment.
âGrandmaster's duties call,â he laughs, slightly worried that you haven't even lifted your head to look at him. âI missed you y/n I've missed you so much.â he admits, hand engulfing yours in the table you lay your head on. Thumb running soothingly on the back of your hand.
âYou didn't even look at me.â Your fingers curl into your palm. Varkas taken aback by the crack in your voice, his heart sinks instantly.
âHey Heyy, look now I knew you were there, you know how it is though. It's tricky, i just don't want to give it away-
âGive what away? Is it your reputation you're so worried about that makes you blatantly ingnore your wife, not even look at your me in public after months apart?â you ask, not wanting to hear the same excuse he uses every time.
That shuts him up.
âI see other people around us happy to be with their husbands or wives no matter their status, it seems you don't see it the same way as they do, as I wish you would. Why couldn't you at least look at me?â You ask, pulling your hand from under his warm one, keeping in close to your chest as your vision blurs.
Varka stares, he can't seem to find his voice. The raw hurt in your voice is enough to make the man's heart ache.
Avoiding his gaze as you lift your head up, you stand to your feet but so does he. His tall build blocks you from moving away from him.
âIt's not that you know it.â He exhales, holding a long breath, scared for what you'll say next. âI would never be ashamed to be seen with you. It's not shame archons it's never been that, if I could show you off y/n I would but it's dangerous. You never know who's watching who has ill intentions and i cant-â
âI can protect myself, I don't need protection.â you cut him off, eyes still trained on the ground.
âI just want my husband to treat me like his wife in public for once, to hold me after his long expedition because I,â you lift your head finally, gaze holding his. âI just missed you so much. I've longed for you. I just want to be next to you but it seems I got the wrong impression. You seem to be holding up just fine without my presence for so long, even after seeing me you felt nothing. Did you even miss me?â you blink, trying to stop the hot tears from coming out.
The look in your eyes breaks him. Wide, glossy and hurt. How has he not noticed? How did he think you'd let it pass like other times? This was cruel, he knows it.
He wasn't even aware this is how you felt, this is what you thought of the whole situation, how can you think he didn't miss you? How can you let yourself believe that he had been ok all this time without you?
His gaze is so soft, so gentle when he looks at you. So different from the expression he wore when he arrived home. You wish he'd look at you like that everywhere else too.
âYou must be tired, I'm sure you want to rest.â You clear your throat, how inconsiderate of you, bringing this up when right he got home. Why couldn't you wait for a better time.
Taking a step around him, you walk past, brushing his shoulder lightly as you make your way to the room. Shame takes over your hurt, you feel horrible. He's just come home and your selfish self is making it about you, how inconsiderate can you be-
You blink, your thoughts cut short when a hand stops you from opening your room door from behind you.
âYou don't get to say those things and walk away like I wouldn't care.â He speaks from behind you voice low, you feel his chest pressed against your back.
âYou truly think I don't care? That I didn't miss you?â He whispers, moving his arms from caging you to snake around your waist, his head leans on your shoulder as he leans his weight on you. You still for a second under his touch. He's so warm, so comforting.
It hits you then, when he holds you in place, that he's shaking. Theres small tremble of his body against yours.
âHow could you think such things when it's so obviously untrue?â He questions, pulling you closer.
âDid you know before we got married I got an anonymous letter that had a photo of you on it? That said if i didn't drop a case that the Knights were in charge of they'd get you? They'd hurt you?â You feel his arms tighten around you, the mere thought of you getting hurt sends Varka into a frenzy.
âI had to drop the case, afterwards I had made sure we met in private and had a few select knights watch over you for months afterwards.â He admits, now it's your turn to be at a loss for words.
âIf you think I'm ashamed to be married to you y/n you're wrong. Shame is not what I feel, it's fear, I fear that you'd get hurt because of me and it's that ever happens I-â you feel something warm on your shoulder, his hands squeeze the fabric of your dress in his grasp.
Slowly you turn in his hold, his big blue eyes shine when yours meet his.
âI don't know what I'd do without you. I love you so much it hurts, my chest aches when I'm away from you, when I can't hold you but I cant- I just can't seem to put you at risk.â He whispers, you wipe his tears as more seems to spill, his eyes close as he feels your touch for the first time in months. He leans in, face nuzzling your hand.
âHow come you never told me that, why would you keep that from me?â You ask, his eyes open again, staring at you as if you walked away again he'd break for sure.
âYou said it yourself, you're strong, you can defend yourself. You would've argued that back then and I would've let you because you're allowed to make your own decisions. But I'm greedy, I'm selfish. I came up with the plan to keep us hidden for the sole purpose of never receiving another letter like that ever again. It's worked this far but at what cost though? For you to think I don't cherish you? That I don't want to hold you in public? For you to question my love for you?" His voice cracks at the mere thought of you being fed up and leaving.
In all the time you've been with Varka he's never cried this much, such an accusation hurt him. You can see it now, if he thought otherwise he'd wouldn't have felt the need to stop you and explain. But here he is, the grandmaster of the knights is crying because he thought you'd walk away from him, that you got tired of being hidden for good and decided that was enough.
Stretching your arms around him, you pull him down by the back of his neck, hugging him tightly as he buries his face in the crook of your neck. His hands claw at the back of your dress holding you closer as he's afraid you'd still walk away. But you don't, you hold him just as tight. Running your fingers through his hair to calm him down as his his breathing evens out.
âI'm so happy to be home my love. Thank you for waiting for me. Thank you.â He repeats it like a mantra, taking in everything, your weight against his body, your warmth, you. He's been deprived for so long, he was starved of your affection and it's back. The man couldn't be happier.
âI'll fix it ok I will, just give me time.â He promises, he'll slowly let it be known if that is truly what you want, he'll show people of Mondstadt your his wife but give him time, time to make sure you'd be safe, to make sure he can protect you no matter what. He calms down a bit, still holding you against him, feeling your heartbeat from your chest beat along with his. His place in the knights, your place as head chief means nothing if it means risking losing you. So he'll do it, make it public slowly but your safety is something he'll put first always. If anyone ever threatens you again, he'd take care of them himself.

Kaeya stumbles into your clinic half conscious, he trips over himself as he leans over one of the shelves to steady himself.
He's beaten, bloody and doesn't want anyone seeing him in this state. It's late but he knows you keep your clinic open for the knights just in case of emergency. They're always welcome to use your things, even call for your assistance if matters are dire.
But even in Kaeyaâs condition he knows he has no right to call you.
It's been weeks, months now since Kaeya has distanced himself from you. You did nothing wrong. He pulled back before he could mess things up. You managed to shake his resolve like no other, youâre so loving and caring as you, going out of your way to check on him when he overworks himself, staying up late with him so he wonât be alone in his office. You brought light into his life, brought back emotions he buried deep down within himself years ago. He didn't deserve any of it. So he pulled back, he couldn't face you, you're someone who deserves everything, someone so special he can't drag you down, too afraid heâd hurt you somehow or worse lose you. So he disappeared completely. You went from spending almost everyday together to radio silence from him, it killed you inside more than you'd like to admit.
You blamed yourself then him then you spiraled, you couldn't figure out why, what led him to leave you without a word.
Though he knows (thinks) he did it for a good reason he can't face you. He would cave in and crumble in your soft touch and worried stare.
He feels he has no right after how he's treated you, so he just has to manage on his own. Bandage up the open wound on his abdomen and hope no one questions the black and blue bruises littering his skin.
He peels off his coat, then his shirt next, the pieces of clothing hitting the linoleum floor with a loud plop. The blood from his clothes already staining the white tiles.
He feels dizzy as he cleans the dried blood clinging to his skin. He used his cryo just a bit on his torso where he got the gash to stop the bleeding before it got worse.
His hands still shake from the aftershock, if he hadn't moved last second he'd be gone, some passerby or adventurer would've stumbled upon his body later and that would've been all, the life of the Cavalry captain would have been one sort lived though he thinks he deserves it to repent for his life of lies and regret.
Kaeya was ambushed by the abyss while he was alone on a small expedition just outside Dadaupa Gorge. The numbers grew in size by the minute and Kaeya was on the brink of giving up pinned to the floor with nothing.
He was fighting an axe welding Mitachril when another Hilichurl had hit him in the back of his head knocking him down before another clawed at his chest, that's when everything took a turn for the worst.
Struggling beneath five of them breathing him at once, his sword knocked out of his reach he lays there, not bathing fighting back. The pain was there, archons his body hurt so bad but death had never scared him before. In fact he found comfort in the thought. All through his life he's lived with immense guilt and self hatred so maybe a death like this was befitting of him.
He lays there taking the brutal beating, his eyes glued to his sword just a few feet from where he lays and his mind wanders. His mind wanders to everything he's done in life, his regret, his pain, how he never actually told Diluc how sorry he was. How he regrets never making up with his brother he cares so much for. He feels his eyes burn, the pain he feels in his chest hurting more than the gashes in him as he think of everyone heâd truly miss. Klee, Bennet, Razor, and you.
He never see would be able to reconcile with Diluc, tell him heâs truly sorry. Heâd never Klee grow up and become a fantastic knight just like Jean. Bennett would be all alone, his self doubt would cling to him without someone to help guide him, he wants to see Bennett become confident and see him happy. Razor, he wants to see him grow, see him become accepted as part of the citizens in Mondstadt. Most importantly you, he wants to see you again.
He never got to tell you how he truly feels because of how scared he is he'd hurt you, instead he pushed you away and left you alone. All alone, it hurts him, he hurt you without wanting to intentionally do so, leaving you with no explanation and it hits him just how much he misses you. How much he wishes he can apologize for his actions but from the way it's looking, he's scared he might never get the chance to do those things.
It hits him then, something strikes his chest and he realizes if he continues to lay still and let this happen he won't ever get to see you again. That alone scares him, more than the thought of death itself.
He blinks slowly, he can't reach his words but his virion should be enough to make them stop moving. His fingers twitch before he slowly lifts his hand, his body temperature goes low and he inhales deep and slow. His hand raises up mid way and everything stills, everything goes quiet before he snaps.
In a blur everything freezes over, the hilichurls freeze with their hands and bats over him, the Mitachurlâs axe is frozen in its hands mid swing, everything is frozen in place.
He exhales shaky, vapor escaping his lips as the temperature around him drops drastically. His hand drops to his side and the Hilichurls surrounding him crumble into pieces.
He sits up, looking around before standing. He feels dizzy, he can feel something warm running down his head, his hand goes to the gash on his torso before his fingers freeze. Applying cryo over his wound to stop the blood for now.
He stumbles forward and picks his sword up before walking away from the scene behind him.
His legs move to the one place he knows he'll be safe, the one place that's always open for him no matter what time of day.
His forearm presses against the counter as he bites the inside of his cheek, his hands touch his wound on his abdomen, a pained groan bubbling out of him.
His eyes squeeze shut as he peels the remaining ice surrounding the wound, shaky hands applying gauze but he stills the second he sees the lights in the clinic flicker on.
You step out from the back room, dropping the supplies in your hands as you spot a figure standing in the infirmary by the bed.
A head of blue hair and toned back slowly turns and you feel your heart drop.
His eye stares wide at you as he opens his mouth but you're In front of him in second's. Delicate hands maneuvering him to lean back as you inspect his wound.
He stares at you, you don't look up at him, you're already grabbing stitches and gauze before he can say anything. You're turned away from him, he can see the slight tremble of your shoulders making his stomach drop.
The second you saw his wounds all your anger dissipated, you could bring yourself to get mad when he's covered in blood in bruises , not when he looks so beat down you don't have it in you to tell him off, to be upset with him.
âY/n.â he whispers, you don't respond, only pushing him gently back onto the bed before you start disinfecting the wound.
âY/n please, look at me.â He grabs hold of your hand stopping you from moving. You look up at him, your eyes blurry as he smiles at you, though he's beaten so badly he still musters it up just fine.
âWhat are you doing here so late? It's almost midnight.â He asks, it's way past closing, you have no reason to be here.
âMy place is cold and quiet, here I have something to do, a purpose. I can't leave if someone needs my assistance.â you admit, trying to swallow the lump in your throat as his smile falters.
âYou're overworking yourself. How long has this been going on-â
âI lost count. Maybe weeks by now.â you answer. âKaeya,â you lean back from where you're crouched , his hands still holding your wrist in his hold.
âWhat happened to you? How'd you get so hurt.â you feel your throat swelling seeing him so beat down.
âThis? This is nothing.â He laughs, trying to play it off. âBelieve me don't worry your pretty head about thi-â
âWhy Kaeya? Why are you here all beat up? Why did you disappear for so long? Was it something I did? Did I say something to upset you?" You ask, voice wavering, feeling his grasp around your wrist tighten.
He stares down at you, you feel his hands slightly tremble and you sigh, looking away.
âSorry,â you apologize, he looks drained, tired, he doesn't need to be bombarded with questions right now. âI shouldn't be asking this when you're in this state. Please let me heal you so you can get rest. You can stay here tonight, I wasn't planning on leaving until later anyway.â You gently pull away from his grasp, laying your hand just over his open wound, applying pressure to stop the bleeding.
âYou did nothing wrong.â He speaks up, you don't respond, you turn again to grab fresh water by the sink and a towel to clean him up.
âI didn't mean to do this, to hurt you,â he takes a deep breath. âI leftbecause you got close and it scared me. I tend to mess things up when people get too close, with people I care for dearly. I can't mess this up with you, I'd go crazy.â He admits, feeling you stop moving.
âI left on my own accord, you can't blame yourself ok? I hated it, really. I couldn't stand it, it was driving me insane but I got scared, too scared to face you again because I couldn't stand the thought of you possibly hating me for it.â
âThat's not fair.â You whisper, looking down at your lap.
Kaeya stills the second he hears you sniffling.
âHey hey don't- please don't cry.â He gently holds your shoulders moving you back so you can look at him.
âYou don't get to pull away before you mess it up, if things ever got messed up between us I'd fix it Kaeya. That's what I'd do because you mean too much for me to just let go, I got so used to you being around it's scary. It's so empty and dull, I'd fix it fast because I don't know what to do without your presence. You can't decide things for me, you don't get to do that. â You stand, chest rising and falling rapidly as you point at his chest.
His eye widens for a second, you're lecturing him. You have every right to be mad but you're so concerned for him at the same time. He smiles, one so genuine and soft you've never seen a man look so gentle with such a look it makes you weak.
He feels his heart beating erratically in his chest as he stand, making you take a step back but he stops you. Reaching for your hand and placing it on his bare chest right over his beating heart. You feel it, the warmth of his skin on yours, his heartbeat pumping in his chest, you can hear it just from how close he's standing.
âIâve never in my life been scared of dying, did you know?â He asks, tone serious as he takes another step closer. âSince I was young I never feared it, in fact I welcomed death to come as soon as possible, to take me away along with my regrets and pain I carry. But today, as I was bleeding out I wasn't ok with it y/n, do you know why?â Kaeya holds your hand firm over his chest as he leans down.
âThe thought of never seeing you again was much scarier being beaten by a mob of Hilichurls. Then bleeding out and dying alone. At first I wanted to accept my fate, let myself pay for my past sins but I thought of you and wanted to be selfish for once. I can't stand the thought of leaving this world without at least telling you I'm sorry, without telling you how much I absolutely miss you, without telling you how much you mean to me.â He confesses, laying his head on your shoulder he hears your sniffling grow louder.
âHey please don't cry, you're hurting me.â a weak chuckle rumbles through his chest, he's not laughing at your emotions, he doesn't know how to react to someone genuinely caring so much for him, crying for him at that. But your arms wrap around him gently, pulling him in as you bury your face into his chest.
âYou don't get to decide things on your own, not if it means almost losing you again, I can't take the pain of not seeing you anymore again.â You cry, feeling his hands run down your back soothingly.
You place your hands on his chest to pull back but you hear see wince, making you pull back completely. You had completely forgotten he was currently still bleeding and bruised.
âI'm sorry! I didn't mean to push you back too hard, I completely forgot,â your eyes widen as you retract your hands. â I need to treat your wounds fast. How long have you been bleeding for?â you turn to grab stitches and disinfectant from behind before seeing a pair of arms circle back around you pulling your back to his chest.
âY/n, I'm sorry.â He whispers, pulling you closer against him. âI'm cant put it into words but you need to know how much I regret leaving you alone like that, for hurting you. It wasn't my intention truly, you're just too special to me, I was too scared to mess this up.â
His arms stay wrapped around your shoulders, you gently tap him âKaeya, you had your reasons, just talk to me next time ok? Please? Don't - you can't decide things like this on your own, you're too important to me to leave, I can't let it happen.â You soothe his forearm, his apology making you feel relieved, you were so worried for so long but he sounded so genuine, looked so scared, there's no way you canât believe him. This man came to you bleeding, not scared to tell you everything, you believe him wholeheartedly.
You feel the tremble of his shoulders on your back, turning to see his eye brimming with unshed tears as he lifts his head from your shoulders. It hurts him seeing you cry for him, seeing what he's done to you. Your reaction makes him feel so much, it makes him feel home, loved, something he never thought he'd let himself feel. Something he thought he didn't deserve. You raise your hand gently placing it on his face as he closes his eyes at your warmth, âLet me heal you up, don't apologize anymore. I forgive you ok?â You assure him as more tears come out, he can only nod in response as you guide him to sit, reaching out to hold your hand every once in a while as you clean up the dried blood and wound on his torso, eye glued to your every move as you wash the dried blood off his head and bandage him up.
You end up staying with him, falling asleep on the chair next to his bed as he looks down at you, amazed how someone can be so caring and understanding, his hand soothes your hair as you sleep. Grateful fate gave him a chance to decide for himself for once, that he came back to you. That he got to see you again. Living with his past regrets is something Kaeya can bear. He realizes that now, as long as he has you, fate can throw anything his way, he won't give up so easily, because now he has a reason to live, someone to live for. You.

Your arm feels heavy as you lift it to shut the alarm off, your head is already pounding despite just waking up. You stand and feel the familiar feeling of body aches set into your legs, a small sign of you coming down with a fever.
You're stubborn though, that wasn't enough to make you stay home from work.
It takes a while longer to get ready for work, but you canât miss. Thereâs so much to get done, meetings you canât miss, paperwork you need to get done by today.
Leaving your apartment the heavy feeling sets itself behind your eyes and entire body. It's hot out but you have a cold sweat, there's much, too much to call in and stay home. You just have to hope it gets better.
During the first few hours of your shift you feel your eyes burn more, the documents from past wanderer attacks need to get done. You haven't been called out to any wanderer sightings today at least, you have that to be thankful for.
Beside you, your phone starts to vibrate. You pick it up and see Sylus is calling so you stand and walk from your desk to the empty halls.
"Hello?" You answer
"Why hello sweetie, a small crow told me you weren't feeling well today and well from the looks of it, you look pretty sick." Sylus greets you, you can hear his stupid sly smile playing on his lips through the phone.
"Sick...where's that dumb crow-" you grumble, eyebrows knitting together as you look out the window of your work building.
Sylus chuckles a low vibration ringing though your cell. He can hear your pout, which makes him chukle more.
"He didn't snitch. He just happened to be near you when I just checked on him and saw you leaning over the wall outside of your work. Couldn't call off Ms Hunter? Is your work really more important than your health?" He questions, the sound of disappointment dripping from his tone.
"No need to stay home if I can still walk, this is nothing I'm not sick just tired." You hold your ground, hoping he buys it.
"You don't always need to overwork yourself you know. You don't sleep enough as is, count on others to be there for you sweetie you're not alone." Sylus sighs, his serious tone making your face warm. He cares, him calling to check on you is enough of a tell tale but it makes you feel so damn warm and embarrassed.
"I'm fine really, a headache is nothing I can't handle. I'm not so fragile, you know, I'm a hunter for a reason." You hum and Sylus knows. He knows you're capable but when he saw how pale and exhausted you looked earlier he couldn't help but worry.
"I know you are capable, I don't doubt you one bit kitten." He softly speaks, he can't help but keep an eye on you.
You open your mouth to say something else but an alarm on your watch goes off before you can.
"Shit." You silently curse, you thought nothing was going to be too eventful today.
"I have to go Sylus, I'll call you when I get home." You sigh hearing him sigh as well.
"Alright, be safe. I'll be awaiting your call." He agrees, though when you hang up he heads out of his office, checking your location on his phone before grabbing his motorcycle helmet.
He knows you can hold yourself against wanderers. But he doesn't trust your judgement on your health, he needs to be sure.
You're sent to a secluded area just almost out the cusp of the city. You split up with the group your sent with and walk to the alley to find any fluctuations
You feel your eyes strain as you load your gun, tucking it into the hilt on your leg you move.
A shiver runs down your spine, a cold breeze hits you, making you feel the light sweat in your hairline. A cold sweat hits you hard as you make your way around, checking your watch for the nearby wanderer.
A loud beep echoes down the hall, you turn hearing a loud growl beside you. Ducking before you fully turn you feel something hard hit your torso.
The air leaves your lungs when you slam into the wall next to you. If your body wasnât in pain already it definitely was now.
You blink, trying to regain your breath as you sit up heaving. Your eyes are hazy from getting up too fast.
It screeches next to you and you stand, holding the hilt of your gun firm as you cautiously step around it.
The wanderer lets out a low growl, claws scratching the floor when you aim your gun its way. The wanderer stops and leers, getting ready to lunge but before it can you steady your hand, shooting two bullets watching the wanderer fall but another immediately appearing behind the fallen one.
You blink and before you can react it jumps, taking you down with it. Your gun falls a few feet away as the wanderer screeches over you.
The ringing in your ears from the impact of your head hitting the floor is loud, you feel worse than earlier. You shouldâve listened to your body, to Sylus and taken today off. Why have things been going downhill since you woke up?
Struggling in its hold, your arm aches as you reach, fingers just brushing against the hilt when you use all your strength and pull underneath the claw of the monster. You feel your shoulder rip but donât have time to think. Reaching as far as you can muster you grab hold of your gun and shoot, not stopping until it starts to disintegrate on top of you.
You lay there heaving as you try to regain strength to stand. Eyes blurring and head pounding to the point where you have to hunch over to stop the worsening pain.
Another loud alarm echos from your watch, from down the hall a wanderer appears, eyes locking in on you. Pulling your gun up you steady your shaky hands and aim, fingers on the trigger as it rounds its shoulders, running down the hall making a b-line for you.
The trigger pulls back but nothing comes out, the clip is empty and the wanderer is more than halfway down the hall. You mentally curse as you reach down your holster on your leg for extra bullets grabbing a handful before looking up you see it jump from where it is, about five feet away lunging your direction sharp teeth snarling and you freeze.
You stop moving, the bullets in your hands falling to the floor as you just look at the monster in front of you. This is it, a fatal move that costs you your life. Just because you couldnât listen to others and you thought you could sweat a fever out youâre going to learn your lesson.
Your eyes shut and your hands fall loose to your sides.
âThereâs nothing I can do.â You think, not even trying to move out of the way. Body too exhausted to do so. You let out a shaky breath and close your eyes, preparing for the worst.
Itâs silent, like the calm before the storm. Then the sound of five rounds being fired rings behind you making you flinch.
âWhat do we have here? Kitten, you seem a bit distracted.â He clicks his tongue, putting his gun down making his way to you. His brows furrowed as he stared at the beast disintegrating in front of you.
âNow, I thought hunters were always supposed to be prepared. Seems you werenât in the best shape to be here now?â He questions, seeing you turn.
You let out a shaky breath you werenât even aware you were holding, you hear your heartbeat ringing in your ears and everything hits you.
Sylus waits, you don't respond. Not even a snarky comeback youâd usually bite back with. Nothing.
You bend and collect the bullets you dropped, trembling hands placing them in your pockets before you stand on shaky legs. The cold sweat makes your teeth clatter and the pain from your torso and shoulder shoots through you.
You canât control it, the shaking, your breathing, everything is spiraling and you canât stop it.
Taking a step you stumble, Sylus is next to you in an instant. His warm hand firmly holding you by your arm and the comfort that you feel when near him hits you. You feel safe.
Lifting your head to greet him but no words come out, you feel your legs buckle and everything goes silent.
Sylus lifts you before you even slump. Your body temperature is at a level thatâs hot to the touch. He frantically moves your hair, palm flattening out on your forehead feeling the sheer heat radiating from you. He needs to cool you down instantly.
He rushes out to his car with you In his arms, gently laying you in the back before speeding home.
His mind is a wreck. When he saw you not even trying to save yourself he almost lost it. He couldnât bear to lose you again. Not after it took him so long to find you again, for you to remember him finally.
You feel like you're in a haze, turning and groaning at the sheer chills you feel run through your body.
Sylus glances back through the rear view mirror and speeds, luckily you were on the cusp of the N109 zone not too far from his base.
Always so careless, refusing to let yourself rest even if it means your health is declining. Your stubbornness is scary, it rivals his own and he can't stand it, not if you're doing it to yourself.
His foot slams the breaks, he throws his door open and pulls the back doors open to get you instantly.
Your eyes crack open, your throat feeling incredibly dry. "It's so cold." you feel your voice crack, Sylus pulls you into his arms steadying you before lifting you up instantly.
His legs move fast, he can feel you shiver but your body temperature is dangerously high. He needs to bring it down now.
The main doors fly open and his legs waste no time making their way to the restroom. He gently lays you on the floor next to the bath as he sets the temperature to cold.
"Bring me a few bags of ice at the lower restroom by the entrance now." You hear Sylus speak into his phone, making your eyes open again.
"I'm cold, no ice please." You blink, the fever is at its worst. It's much more draining than you thought it would be.
"I know sweetie I'm going to help you." He whispers, calming tone hushing you as he moves your bangs from your face.
The twins come in seconds, heads whipping between Sylus and you as they hand him bags of ice.
"Boss are they alr-"
"Out." He speaks, opening the bags of ice. The twins don't hesitate, they leave the second the word leaves his mouth.
The bath is filled up a bit more than halfway. He pulls you near him, feeling you push him back a bit.
"I don't." You struggle, seeing the bath filled up and ice in there made your teeth clatter. "I'm so cold please don't." You pull your wrist back but it doesn't budge in Sylus' firm grasp
"Sweetie, I need you to listen to my voice." He steadys you, hands gently holding your face in his warm palms. "You need to cool off, I'm here with you ok? I won't let nothing else happen." He assures, nodding his head when your hazy eyes meet his.
You feel delirious, your eyes sting when he stands you up holinging you when he steps into the cold tub, sitting down and bringing you with him.
Tears sting your eyes, your body feels like it's going to explode when he submerges your legs and waist underneath the freezing water.
"Sylus I'm freezing I can't." You grip his arm with whatever strength you have left trying to move from him but he holds you in place, putting it further into the tub to cool you down.
"I know, but I can't let you go until you cool down sweetie." He whispers, his arms caging you in, one holding your shoulders down his other holding your waist. Your back flat against his chest as he pushes you back into him by your torso.
âPlease Sylus, please let me go, I can't please don't do this.â you plead your throat raw as you kick your legs trying your absolute hardest to get away. It hurts so much.
Sylus feels pain so sharp in his chest at your pleading tone. But he can't let you go yet, not until he's sure you're cooled off, until he feels your body temperature go back to normal.
His shaky hands steady when your thrashing stops.
"Sylus I don't feel- I'm so cold." You heave, head falling back into his chest as exhaustion takes over from the body aches to your high fever and getting attacked plus crying was taking a huge toll on you.
Hot tears run down your face as you take in deep breaths, Sylus' big warm hands rubbing your arms soothing you, shushing you as he rocks you back and forth. "I'm here, I have you ok sweetie. You're not alone." He assures pulling you impossibly closer.
He feels your breathing even and soon your head slumps forward. His firm hand grabs your face but you don't respond, for a second he internally panics but he feels your pulse steady and rhythmic to his own. You've finally cooled down after about ten minutes of being here, now he needs to get you changed and some medicine, you're not going out of his sight until he sees you get better himself.
Your eyes crack open, the dim room surrounding you making your eyes widen in seconds.
Your body shoots up frantically, head spinning as your hands rub your temples. You realize you're in Sylus' hideout or to be more exact, Sylus' room.
Looking around for the man in question you realize you're alone, so you stand. Pain shoots through your torso and shoulder making you hiss as you take a few steps. The last thing you remember was feeling cold, so damn cold.
You take a few steps when the door opens gently catching you making your way across the room.
Before you can even turn to see who it is, a pair of arms firmly grabs your waist and a second later you're being thrown over a broad shoulder.
"Ah HEY-" a surprised yelp escapes your lips at the sudden movement. A strong arm holds you up effetlessly.
Looking down at the man who just tossed you like a sack of potatoes you feel no discomfort, he's holding you so gently despite your body being in so much pain.
"I take my eyes off you for one second kitten, and you're already trying to sneak away." He jokingly clicks his tongue as his head shakes.
He stops in front of the bed, letting you down as if you're made of glass. Setting a tray of food down on the bedside table.
"What happened? How long have I been out?" You ask, looking up at him seeing his eyebrow quirk up.
"Two days. All because certain stray cat decided to bare her fangs in the face of danger when she wasn't feeling so well. Tell me Ms Hunter, is that a smart thing to do now?" He questions, grabbing the chair next to the bed, moving it to sit right in front of you.
Looking at him you can't even defend yourself, you know how reckless that was yet you still pushed yourself.
"Sorry you had to see that." You speak up, voice still a bit horse biting the inside of your cheek as his eyes stare into the depths of your soul.
Sulys may look calm on the outside but inside he's a mess. He was so worried, it's been two days of you fighting such a high fever and you're finally going back to normal, he's so relieved to see your eyes he loves so much open, looking at him with such tenderness despite you being sick for so long.
His eyes soften when you look into his, he moves in closer, arms caging you in both sides of your legs.
"Never do that again, please come to me and lean on me if you're wounded or don't feel good. You don't have to shoulder the burden all by yourself anymore. You have me." Sylus' voice is so soft, his hand coming up to your forehead to feel the temperature.
"I feel fine now-"
"You still feel warm sweetie, what's the matter?" He questions, leaning in closer, feeling his breath fan over your face, you feel yourself shrink under his intense gaze.
"I can't help it, it's warm right now." You hold his gaze, the corners of his lips lifting up seeing the light pink dust across your face.
"Get comfortable sweetie, you're not leaving my side for a while. You need to eat." He whispers, standing up to give you space before placing a kiss on your forehead.
Before he can take another step you reach for his arm, pulling him back a bit making him stop fully turning back to you, eyes looking into yours as you try to find the right words.
âYou don't have to leave, please I don't want to be alone.â You confess, making him sit back down grabbing the soup he made for you, blowing on the spoonful of soup. You ask him to stay and he will, he needs no other excuse.
Sylus blows the steaming spoon a few more times before slowly lifting it to your lips. âEat, you need food.â He speaks softly. Eyes trained on your movement. You oblige, opening your mouth accepting the spoonful of warm delicious soup.
âThank you, for shouldering the burden of caring for me. You can lean on me too no matter what, ok? I'm always here for you too no matter what Sy.â You speak up, as he puts the spoon back in for another spoonful. You sit up straighter, your resolve in your eyes shows him you mean every word you say and he feels his heart beat faster.
In one swift movement heâs in front of you leaning down again, hand holding your face as he leans in. âThose words are tempting, keep your promise and Iâll be here forever sweetie.â He whispers, eyes holding such intensity as he speaks. His eyes stare at your lips making you swallow nervously. He's so close you can smell his intoxicating scent. You almost close the distance but he softly kisses your cheek before pulling back.
âYou need to get more rest, youâre not fully recovered.â He holds back, he has to. As much as he'd love to hold you and have his way with you, he knows your health and you recovering fully comes first. âNow open up,â he turns back to the soup, grabbing another spoonful before looking back at you. âYou're not going anywhere until you finish your soup and get more rest I advise you to get comfortable sweetie.â

(diluc loves you, so he says. so why do you catch him with someone else?)
âË â§ âżď¸ľâżŕ¨ŕ§âżď¸ľâż ⧠âË
âI'm heading out to work my love.â Diluc whispers, placing a small kiss on your temple.
A soft smile plays on his lips as he softly tucks some hair behind your ear. He knows he's been leaving you alone for too long, making up excuses, but today that ends.
You try not to smile as you pretend to stay asleep. Not moving until you hear the front door shut, only when you hear complete silence you jump up from bed.
The second diluc leaves for work at the tavern is when you start preparing the manor for his surprise. For Dilucs birthday.
You start by wrapping the gifts you got him and placing them around his favorite parts of the house. Then move on to decorations, putting up a banner and blowing up balloons.
Everyone in the manor including Adelinde insisted they help you, they wanted to surprise their young master as well. happy that he has someone willing to do something so generous for him, happy that he won't lock himself up in his room this year. happy that he has someone to celebrate with.
You start on the cake while Adelinde and the others put up the balloons and small streamers neatly around all corners of the house.
Diluc deserves so much, he's hardworking and he comes home late at night after long grueling hours. He's so caring and he never takes his birthday seriously and it hurts you. He means so much to you and you know he deserves everything, so you give him all you can.
By the time the cake is done, dawn is near, the sky littered in a beautiful pinkish color and eveything is set. You feel nervous as you glance at the clock on the wall.
You ponder going out to get him at the tavern or to wait for him to come home.
Excited, you can't sit still. You decided to go and get him, wanting to surprise him at work with a small letter to one of the many gifts you got him. You feel giddy to see his reaction to his surprise, grabbing everything you need before leaving the house.
You only smile thinking of what his reaction would be, would he get shy? Would he smile the way that makes your knees weak? His soft smile that makes his dimples show, that never fails to make your heart race.
You enter the city gates and see kaeya, he points to the direction of the tavern and smiles. Happy that someone is celebrating dilucs birthday with him and he's not alone anymore. He'd love to spend it with him too but he'll leave this day for you both, he'll drop off the gift he got diluc tomorrow.
You send a thumbs up to Kaeya, smiling as you make your way to the tavern door hearing it quiet signaling he closed for the day, you push it open squeezing the gift close to your chest.
âhappy bi-â your words get caught in your throat, looking inside you feel time slow down.
You step in and your eyes adjust to whatâs in front of you, what you just walked into.
Diluc stops, everything stops when your smiling eyes slowly drop. Staring into the depths of his soul asking him a million questions with just the look in your eyes.
The woman on top of Diluc stops kissing his neck after a few seconds and turns to you, seeing you hold a small gift box in your hands as you stare at her while she's on top of your boyfriend.
You can't even find your voice. His eyes stare into yours with the same shock, like he wasn't aware of what he was just doing.
Diluc feels lightheaded, his mouth feels unbelievably dry as he tries to say something, anything.
You feel your hand drop from the knob, squeezing the box in your hand a bit tighter as you grasp the situation in front of you.
Your eyes fall from Dilucâs blown irises, to his swollen lips, to the marks on his neck and you feel your heart drop.
heâs cheating on me.
How long has this been going on? How many nights has he stayed late with this woman, lied to your face when he would make up excuses as to why he'd come home after midnight. You canât seem to look away, refusing to believe the man in front of you was Diluc.
You finally move and Diluc holds his breath, he deserves to be hit, smacked, be called any horrible name you call him because he knows it's all true. He swore to himself heâd stop this all today, but you found out before.
You donât even react, your expression goes blank. You only lift the gift over the trash bin and drop it, turning to leave right after you do so.
"Wait-" Diluc feels his throat swell, you didn't even react, though your eyes alone told him all he needed to know.
He messed up.
You feel your eyes burn as you rush to leave. The shock on his face and the woman on top of him, it hurts, your heart physically aches.
You can't see him, you're unsure of what you would say or do afraid of what you saw back there and how long it's been happening behind your back, afraid that your lover was a liar and that he was never who you thought he was.
He's been seeing someone else, for how long?
Kaeya sees you from afar, you're leaving alone. He knows you went to visit Diluc to surprise him but he wouldn't let you leave alone. Diluc would never let you walk home alone.
Diluc feels it all hit him when the door shuts, you're leaving and he needs to stop you. Needs to talk to you, needs you to react to scream or hit him for what you've seen. Your silence scared him more than he ever thought.
âWho was that dil-â
âGet out, leave me alone now.â He gets up, guilt washing over him. The woman next to him clicks her tongue looking at diluc who refuses to look at her and leaves, not wanting to know what kind of mess he's in now.
Diluc feels his hands tremble as he makes his way to the bin next to the door, his heart dropping when he reaches down and grabs the small delicate box.
He grabs his coat and puts the small box in his pocket before running out of the tavern, he has to stop you. Fearing what he saw, the look on your face, the look of betrayal, would be the last time he ever sees you.
He ignores the stares as he speeds past people as he exits the city gates, sprinting as fast as he can trying to spot you anywhere as he does so. How far did you get? Will you go back home? What if you don't even go back? Youâre going to leave him, you found out and youâre never going to forgive him, the thought alone scares him.
You keep your head down as your legs move fast, you can hear how fast your heart is beating through your ears and you feel lightheaded. âI need to go home, I need to pack my things.â you repeat to yourself over and over. You can't let him explain, can't let him convince you otherwise. What you saw was enough to let you know he doest love you the way you love him.
How could he? When did he fall out of love with me? When did this start? You question yourself, beating yourself up more for not noticing. How didnât you guess this, you never thought it was a possibility with Diluc, you never thought that was something youâd have to fear of him but you were gravely wrong.
Diluc sprints down the cityâs bridge to the entrance of Windrise looking around in all directions until he sees a familiar head of hair almost running down the path to Springvale towards the Dawn Winery.
He picks his pace back up, long legs sprinting at a speed he hasnât ran at in so long, he doesnât know what to say but he knows he has to do something, anything, if he doesnât he just might lose the best thing thatâs ever come into his life.
Your hand comes to your mouth as you feel your eyes sting. Your mind spirals down somewhere dark, it's all hitting you now.
Diluc has been cheating on you. You spent all day getting ready to surprise the man who doesn't even love you anymore. Your legs stop moving as you feel sick to your stomach.
Thinking back to the late nights when he would come home and carry you to bed, kiss your head and hug you after showering, never before. How many times he's lied to you everytime he utters the words âi love youâ, how he kisses you after letting a random woman kiss him. you feel sick.
He sprints down the road and sees you hunched over a bit, he stops a few feet back from you and he can hear you heaving. you're spiraling, you're getting sent into a frenzy because of him, the sight in front of him tears him to pieces.
âI need to go, I need to leave.â you mumble to yourself, trying to ground yourself to reality.
âMy love-â he steps close making you physically jump.
âDont.â You heave out, taking a step back when you see him step closer. Your eyes were glassy but the look in your eyes was so foreign to him, you were glaring at him.
âDon't you dare, don't try to touch me not,â you take a deep breath trying to stand straight. âNot whe- not when you let others do the same.â you exhale trying to steady your breathing, he takes a few steps back, his arms falling loosely at his sides.
âWhat wasn't I providing for you? Was I not enough, not lovable, not caring enough that you had to-â you feel sick again, you feel your eyes sting as your arms wrap around your torso, the sight alone almost makes Diluc fall to his knees.
âNo, no no no no darling it wasn't-â
âDon't call me that?â You hiss, almost laughing when his eyes brim with tears.
He can't stand it, the things you're saying he can't bear to hear how his actions caused you to think such things.
It all happened so suddenly, he was too much of a coward to ever stop it.
He felt guilty for so long, four months of hiding this deep down he hoped you would find out and leave him because he knows what he's doing is the most disgusting thing of all. He knows you deserve better.
Diluc loves you more than he can put into words truly and archons he knows what he's done is unforgivable but he canât lose you, he canât.
Before he can say anything he sees you walk away, into the familiar direction of your home. He wants to stop you and try to explain, even though he knows nothing he says would make you think what he did was ok.
He quietly walks behind you, feeling his stomach drop when he sees your shoulders shake in front of him as you try to mask your crying.
You don't have anything to say, truly. You just want to get away, get your stuff from what used to be home and leave him.
The walk back is quiet, Diuc keeps a close eye out as you both make your way down the dark road, he stays a few steps behind you. You haven't said another word to him and it's making the tall man more anxious than anything.
The winery comes into view and you sigh, knowing what's inside waiting for him makes you dread it all. It hurts you now, you don't want to see any of it. Putting in so much effort for the man you love only to find you're not the one he loves, has he ever felt the same?
You feel your heart drop as you make your way to the door hearing Diluc shuffle behind you. You were so happy, so excited to see his reaction to what you've prepared but now you're embarrassed. Embarrassed that you prepared for this, that you spent so much time only to find out he was with someone else this whole time as you waited for him to come home.
You lift your shaky hands to turn the knob and feel Diluc reach for your arm, you push the door open and pull your arm away, not even looking back at him as you both hear confetti poppers and see the lights turn on.
Adelinde and the other house workers all pop out greeting their young master, wishing him a happy birthday.
You slip past them, Adelinde sees your swollen red eyes as you pass her, smiling before putting your head down as you make your way to your shared bedroom with diluc. You donât have the heart to tell her what just happened. Not when she helped you with everything today.
He tries to catch up to you but you're already walking up the stairs as everyone greets him. Adelinde looks over at diluc whose expression is one she hasnât seen since the incident with Crepus happened. Why did you both look distressed? You were so happy decorating, why aren't you celebrating with them?
Adelinde takes that as a que, right now wasn't the time. They can wish Diluc a happy birthday but on their way home, something's clearly wrong.
âAlright everyone, bid the young master your last birthday wishes and head on now, he and y/n have catching up to do.â Adelinde clears her throat, looking who's wide eyes look at her, she can see his glossy eyes and something in her chest tightens.
âThank you, everyone. You've done enough today. I appreciate it. Head on home and take the day off tomorrow, all of you." Diluc speaks up, clearing his throat.
They all thank him once again wishing him a happy birthday before heading out.
Adelinde is the last to leave, looking at Diluc she gives a small bow. âSir, y/n decorated and set everything up for you today. I think it would be best if you spent some time with them to show your gratitude. you haven't been home and they've been alone as of lately they can use your company.â she gives him a small smile before exiting.
The now empty mansion feels oddly quiet as Diluc takes in his full surroundings, the banner in the living room, the small decorations placed nearly around the house. He takes a few steps in and feels his eyes burn, feels his chest heavy as Adelindes words sink in.
His legs move finally, sprinting up the stairs and down the hall to your shared room. Pushing the door open as he tries to catch his breath his eyes land on the suitcase and small bag on your bed and he shudders, his knees almost giving out.
âW-Whatâre you- why are you?â He speaks up, knowing deep down you'd do this. He knew you were walking back home with him to take your stuff and leave, part of him thought maybe you'd stay but he knows it's a sick thing for him to even think after what you saw
âThis isn't-â you whisper, clutching some clothes in your hands as you hurriedly put them into your suitcase. âIsn't what I want to do, but I can't stay and make someone who loves me no more love me again.â you bite the inside of your cheek, trying your absolutely hardest not to crumble.
âNo I-â he steps close but you don't look at him, turning to grab more of your clothes. âNo no PLEASE NO.â his voice rises with urgency, the reality of what he's been hiding the whole time is revealed, hitting him harder than he anticipated.
âDon't don't please don't leave me ill-â
âIt's too late, Diluc. I have nothing to say and no business staying here.â You keep your back to him, afraid if you look at him you'd let him convince you to stay.
âIt meant nothing, you are my everything I'm stupid IM FOOLISH I'M A COWARD I KNOW IT WAS WRONG.â he heaves, falling into his knees behind you as he struggles to breath.
You feel your eyes burn at his plea, heart breaking that today was his birthday and you had to see him like this, but your soul was hurting seeing him with someone else.
âDiluc, thereâs no need for me to stay here. Just like there is no spot for me in your heart anymore it canât happen. What youâve done it-â you feel sick again, remembering the woman on top of your lover was more painful than any injury youâve ever suffered from. âIt canât be fixed Diluc, you chose her, I donât know for how long but you canât beg me to stay when you left me alone for days, months claiming you were working.â You hiccup, trying to keep your composure but you're crumbling right in front of him.
As painful as seeing your liver cheat, your heart aches. you don't want to leave him. You can't imagine a life without him but deep down you know it will never ever be the same, this isn't the same man who claimed he loved you. The same Diluc who swore you were his one and only, you were someone else now. Not his lover, but someone who couldn't amount to what he wanted. You desperately gave your all but clearly, it wasn't enough.
You grab the remainder of your things as you close your suitcase grabbing your coat. Diluc stands up on his feet as it dawns on him, he's losing you. you're leaving him for good.
âI'm sorry I wasn't enough, that I didn't meet your needs and couldn't give you what you wanted-â
âNo please. Don't say that please-â he's breathless at your words. âYou are my everything, y-you can't go. I can't lose you. I can't handle this. I messed up. I understand but look at me please look at me. I love you more than anyone, she isn't what I want, I want you forever not anyone else, what I had with her compares to nothing my love. I'm begging you to scream and hit me but for the love of celestia I can't lose you.â Diluc cuts you off as his voice cracks, he stands much closer to you. His eyes bloodshot with tears, his hair is a mess as he keeps running his hair back with his hands. He feels his hands tremble. He wants to hold you to plead and beg you to stay but you don't let him near you. It's tearing him apart.
âThere was another woman on top of you Diluc, do you understand what I saw? How I myself don't want to believe you would do that?â you exhale a shaky breath. âYou already lost me the moment I opened that door Diluc, you betrayed my trust, my love for you.â you whisper, your whole body feels heavy as you pick up your suitcase hearing a strained sob come from behind you.
âDiluc.â You call out, his red irises stare into your eyes for the first time since you got home and he feels the air leave his lungs. The look in your eyes is dead, you stare blankly, void of any emotion despite the red puffiness around your eyes as you look at him. The eyes that used to look at him with pure love and adoration are no longer there. You're done with him, he can see how much pain he's caused just by the look in your eyes and he canât stand the sight.
His eyes, you've never seen such an expression on your lover. Such a pitiful look from the man you gave your whole heart to, he's looking at you like you're the one who did it, like he's the one who caught you.
âI fear this is our last goodbye.â You speak up, seeing the man who seemed unbreakable and strong break down in front of your eyes, heaving as he takes a step closer. âI hope you find someone to fill your desires that I never could fill.â you bid your farewell, biting your cheek to stop your own sobs. Turning from him knowing you can never face him again, saying goodbye to him, your love for him, and your trust for him. Despite the pain in the depths of your heart and soul aching from the sound of his sobs, you know you can't do this, it will never be the same.
âY/n please, please please don't.â he begs, in a way you've never seen anyone but you don't dare turn, what's done is done.
Diluc can't comprehend, it's all happening too fast. You're leaving. Your footsteps echo as you walk away, all he thinks back to all the times he found you asleep on the couch or in his office with his coat around you to give you comfort because he himself was never there to do so.
He can't stand himself, he's losing the best thing that's ever happened to him because of his disgusting selfish desires.
His legs move slowly, making his way down to the entrance. Reaching down into the pocket of his pants he grabs the small box that you threw in the trash.
His heart aches.
He opens the small box and there's a small card:
âMy love, you're so busy nowadays it feels like I only see you in my dreams. I hope today we can celebrate a day that means the world to me, the day you were born is one so special no holiday can amount to it. I hope we can spend this day and many more birthdays of yours together until the end. I love you and I want you to know you're loved, I will always love you.
- yours truly y/n.â
His vision becomes blurry, his hands tremble as he reads the innocent birthday letter, wrenching his heart dry. looking around at the small meticulous decorations in his favorite colors, a cake and gifts littler the table, no one but his dad and kaeya have ever celebrated his birthday this way, but things have changed since his dad passed until you came along. But now you're gone too. You're gone and it's the first time in years that he finds himself alone on his birthday, alone in the dark quiet mansion that haunts him of his past and recent wrongdoings.
He can't move, he can't move from where he stands, head in his hands as he wipes the never ending tears from his eyes, hands pulling at his hair as he heaves. He's alone. He's all alone. It hits him harder when he looks up at the big banner upon his entrance. The very entrance you once walked into bringing light when you came into his life and the very one he extinguished by his disgusting desires that led you to walk out, the words written on that banner are words he knows he would never hear leave your mouth again.
âHappy Birthday Diluc!â

The chief of justice often feels the pressure of his role. Lately the cases have been weighing heavy on him, more so than usual.
The amount of unattended cases and trials to come up only makes the judge more anxious, more stressed, and worst of all more irritable.
He hasnât been taking care of himself, often prioritizing his job over his health and it breaks your heart. Youâve caught him taking naps in his office when youâd stop by to visit so you thought of making him something to help him during his times when he sleeps.
You're a local seamstress, but you have a good hand for crocheting as well. You often make small crochet plushies for the orphans and melusines so you thought a small pillow would work wonders for nevi when he takes naps in his office.
The iudex is sat at his desk reading over one of the many cases piled up next to him. His migraine forms as he sighs, taking a sip of cool water in hopes to somewhat ease it.
He hears a soft knock at his door and ignores it at first. The people he works with know not to bother the chief when he has this much work to do. but the knock is heard again making him sigh, putting the documents down.
âCome in.â He calls out, seeing your head peek in, a soft smile already playing on your lips.
âHello love!â you beam, you love visiting your husband at work. You donât get to see him home too often, you take any chance you get to drop by.
âHello,â he greets back, mouth forming a straight line. âIs something the matter?â He asks, wasting no time.
âNo, I just wanted to drop off something for you.â You smile, feeling how off he was right away. He must be so drained you think, trying to dismiss the uninterested tone in his voice.
You pull a small bag from behind your back and walk up to him, holding it out for him to grab.
His face remains neutral and you feel small under his gaze, regretting interrupting his work.
Itâs strange though, he usually always welcomes you with a warm smile, ushering you in to spend time with him. Today was different.
He begrudgingly moves his chair back and eyes the bag.
Whatâs so important that you have to interrupt his work?
He grabs the bag from you and you pull your hand back as he peeks in, moving the wrapping paper aside.
His hand comes up to the bridge of his nose when he sees a small pillow with blue and white lace trimming at the edges in the bag.
He doesn't know what he expected and he doesnât understand why he feels so bothered but he canât help it.
âIs this all?â He asks, putting the wrapping paper back on top, handing you the bag back like it was something that made him upset.
âI made it for you. You often take breaks and sleep in your office so I thought-â
âThatâs the problem you know.â He cuts you off before you can finish, making you step back a bit.
âYou think what you do will make things better for people or you know what people need.â He brushes off the small gift like nothing.
âI just wanted you to get proper rest, you look tired. I know you havenât been getting much sleep because of all the cases and-â
âAnd youâre the one stopping me from finishing them right now, right? I donât need you always checking up or stopping by when you feel like it. Some of us take our jobs seriously. Itâs suffocating having you stop by everyday. I need space and time to do my own job alone. Thank you very much.â Heâs almost out of breath by the end of it, his eyes narrow at you, you feel what the verdicts of the cases feel when he judges them.
You donât know what to say. You feel small under his gaze and he doesnât even flinch, after all heâs said he stands his ground.
âForgive me for worrying in the slightest, it wonât happen again.â Your voice falls flat, you dig your nails in your palm to stop the sting in your eyes as you turn to leave.
Reaching the door you half expect him to stop you, apologize or something but it never happens. You step outside and feel your tears drop, lowering your head from gazes around you.
You head to your home with a heavy heart. You feel utterly stupid. You shouldâve seen the signs, you knew he was on edge because of work and you walked right into it like a spider's web.
You reach your house feeling drained. You slowly make your way to your room to continue working on small plushies for the orphans to take your mind off the harsh words you hear earlier. Throwing the small pillow you made into the trash before you get to work. He doesnât want it and neither do you.
Neuvillette lets out a content sigh. Heâs done his work, more than half of the cases heâs reviewed and he feels better. Enough to call it a day and head home somewhat earlier than normal. Maybe he can catch a meal with you, something he hasnât done in ages.
He opens the door to your shared home and takes note of how quiet it is. Is it usually this quiet when youâre alone?
The living room was dim, the only source of light was flooding the from the cracks of your shared bedroom.
He hangs his coat and makes his way to your shared bedroom. He wants nothing more than to spend time with you.
You hear your bedroom door creak but donât bother to turn around, already knowing who it was. You made a promise to yourself to stop being overbearing with him, he told you itâs suffocating, you never want him to feel that way with you.
He feels his lips tug upwards a bit at the sight of you. You were stitching some plushies, your work always so beautiful and delicate.
âHello my love.â He speaks softly, he knows he acted out of place earlier but he wants to make it up to you. He knows you only care, that just the kind of sweet genuine person you are.
âHello.â You welcome him barely above whisper, not looking up at him. You lay in bed crocheting a small plushie.
âAre you going to drop those off at the orphanage tomorrow?â He asks, heart filling with utter adoration at the sight of you making your beautiful plushies.
âYes.â You answer, nodding your head as you cut the end of the yarn off.
âWould you like me to assist you?â He asks, you feel like itâs a trick question. After all he has told you today he asks this?
âNo need. You have work, I can go with Navia.â You decline, he stands there for a second before clearing his throat.
âWhy of course, please send my regards when you stop by.â He asks and you nod.
Whatâs wrong? Youâve never declined his offers of helping you. Were you not feeling well?
âIâm going to wash up dear, afterwards Iâll make us something to eat.â His voice is much softer than earlier. You donât understand what he wants anymore. Itâs confusing.
While Neuvillette was showering you warmed up his portion of the dinner you made, setting it up on his bedside table. You were hurt by his words but you still want him to eat.
After preparing his meal on his bedside table, you grab your pillow and an extra blanket heading to the living room couch. As much as his words hurt you, you still want to hold him, talk to him and have him close but he doesnât want that. He made it more than clear in his office.
After Neuvilletteâs shower, heâs greeted with a meal on his nightstand. He looks around the room and notices you're not in bed anymore. He catches sight of your plushie on your nightstand and thinks you went to use the other restroom.
He gets changed and smiles at the meal you made for him. Always helping him when he knows you work just as hard as he does, if not even harder than he does. Youâre passionate about your work and he adores that side of you.
He buttons up his shirt and sits in bed, looking at the clock. It's been over 15 minutes since heâs gotten out. Why weren't you back in bed?
He stands and walks over to your side of the bed where the plushie lays on the nightstand. From the corner of his eye a blue and white lace trimming catches his attention and he looks down at the small bin next to your side of the bed.
He reaches in and pulls out the small pillow you had brought to his office earlier that day, he feels his heart sink. Remembering his harsh words and how he gave it back to you without a second thought. He feels guilty.
You threw this beautiful pillow away because of his foolish outburst. He feels like a fool for talking to you in such a way. Your guarded attitude made more sense now that he realizes it.
He clutches the small pillow in his hold and looks to your side of the bed, noticing your pillow missing.
His legs move on their own, opening your room door greeted with the dark living room only a candle being your source of light.
He can see you laying on the couch and he feels his eyes burn.
As he nears you he hears you crying and his heart tugs at the sound.
He wouldnât dare let you sleep alone, ever.
He says nothing as he turns to you and you quickly turn away to hide your tears.
He kneels down a bit. Arms circling under your legs and head, picking you up with ease as he grabs your pillow before making his way back to your room.
You feel more tears spill. What was all this? What does he want?
He stops in the room after closing the door behind him. The only sound to be hard was your sniffling before you heard rain, rain droplets hitting your window.
He holds you closer, tighter in his hold.
âMy love, Iâm terribly sorry for my words that have caused you to feel the need to distance yourself. Iâm sorry I disregarded your gift for me. I will cherish it forever.â He whispers, his legs moving once again making his way to your side of the bed.
He softly lays you down before standing again, you see the pillow you thee away on your nightstand and feel more tears spill.
He turns, he knows he should give you space, give you time alone and as much as he wants to hold you he has to respect your boundaries.
Before he can get too far he feels a hug in his wrist, he feels his own tears spill.
Your heart, which is too kind and forgiving, knows him too well. He truly doesnât deserve you.
âPlease donât leave.â You whisper, he only nods, whoâs he to say no? After all heâs done today heâd be a fool.
He climbs into bed, arms immediately grabbing you, laying you on top of him as the rain outside gets louder.
âMy love, I apologize for my actions. Please find it in your heart to forgive a fool like me, not right now but when you can.â He can only whisper, if he speaks any louder heâs scared heâll cry more.
You nod your head as it lays on his chest âyes my love, I do.â you hug him, if he didnât care, he wouldnât be here right now you tell yourself. The fact that heâs here right now shows so much.
You hear his heartbeat steady and the rain outside subside. Knowing heâs calmed down, feeling your eyes grow heavy. Neuvillette holds you closer, making a promise to himself and you to never act out of place like that again. Not with you, whoâs so caring and giving heâll cherish you forever along with the pillow you made for him today.
wriothesley
The duke is in charge of many things, running the fortress of meropide is one. Dealing with troublesome inmates to make sure they know their place and meetings that consist of various things for him to arrange.
Wriothesley was making his way back from a meeting with Neuvillette. He has asked him about an inmate, asking him to bring him up for further questioning, giving him the inmates name and number before he left.
Neuvillette had given him a small paper with the number and name. Wriothesly had memorized it just after a few glances at the small paper. But during his busy day out he has misplaced it. And as the day went on he was worried heâd forget.
He didnât want to trouble Neuvillette with another meeting to give him the number again so heâs been repeating it while making his way to his office.
You decided to bring Wrio some food and tea. Upon arriving at his office you found it empty and decided to surprise him for when he comes back. Sitting on the small couch by his desk, setting up his meal for when he comes.
You often have one or two days out of the month where you catch up and eat lunch together in his office. It's one of the ways that you get to see him more besides when he comes home to sleep.
No one dared to stop the duke as he made his way to his office, the look on his face alone was screaming donât approach me right now.
You hear his office door open and hear his footsteps echoing up the staircase, you stand up and wait by the edge of the stairs happy to see him.
He doesnât even look your way when he reaches the top, instead he brushes past you. Mumbling some numbers under his breath.
âWrio.â You call out softly, making him whip his head back. He didnât even notice you were here, let alone see you standing right by him.
âWhatâre you doing here?â He asks, it comes out harsher than he intends.
âI brought you food! We havenât had lunch in a while, I made your favorite too. Itâs been sometime since weâve sat down and had a home cooked meal.â You beam, smiling at him and pointing to his desk behind him where you set up the food.
âThatâs great, but right now isnât the time.â He brushes you off. Walking to the cabinet where all the inmates' files are repeating the number in his head still.
âI'm not trying to tell you what to do, but you tend to look over your health because of work. This can help you focus on your work more! I even brought your favorite tea to go with it.â You walk to his desk and pour the hot tea into his favorite cup.
âJust take a second and eat, take care of yourself and-â
âDo you ever stop?â He feels his grip on the cabinet tighten as he closes his eyes, taking a deep breath.
You stop talking and look over at him.
âIâm sorr-â
âI have an office to do my work, for peace and quiet as I do so. No one has the right to waltz in here and think they can have a tea party and talk their heads off while I work.â He slowly turns to you.
You only swallow, not knowing how to respond.
âYou know I have more important things to do than have a meal with you. You talk so much, too much sometimes and you donât know when to stop and itâs bothersome. Learn how to stop at times and not bother people when theyâre working, yeah?â He scolds, roughly shoving the cabinet closed.
You look down at the desk, too embarrassed to look him in the eyes.
You feel like youâre glued to the floor. You canât move.
âIâd like to get back to work, I donât have time for all this. Iâd be best if you went back to work as well.â He sits at his desk with a file and you feel your eyes sting.
Leaving the food on his desk and grabbing your bag. Walking downstairs and away from his office that felt suffocating, you shouldâve just minded your business.
You walk out of his office, closing the door softly as his words ring in your head.
Seigwinne sees you, walking up but stopping In his tracks when she sees your solemn expression. Sheâs studied humans enough to know that the emotion you were feeling was sadness.
You make your way home, stepping inside and locking the door as you feel the first tear run down your face.
You know how much you talk, you know many people donât like it but Wriothesley never said anything about it. Heâs always listened to you, saying it helps him relax. During work heâs often doing the talking so hearing you talk, it brings him peace. He also loves your voice.
When did he start getting annoyed? Has it been a while? What if heâs been tired of hearing me this whole time? You question yourself. Coming to the conclusion that you need to stop. Stop talking so much and taking up his time. Itâs for the better.
When Wriothesley ends the meeting with the inmate he finally feels some tension release from his shoulders. Heâs been running around all day and he hasnât had time to sit in peace.
From the time on the clock he sees it reaching seven pm and decides to call it a day. Heâs done the most important task already. He can attend other matters tomorrow.
As he cleans up his desk he notices the food and tea, remembering you stopped by earlier to chat with him. Remembering what a jerk he was and how he told you to leave.
He sighs when he notices what you made. You have a habit of putting others' priorities before yours and he feels bad for how he responded. He packs up the food to take it back home, to reheat and eat with you like you wanted.
When he arrives home, he notices how quiet it was inside. He pushes the door open and is met with a small lamp in the kitchen and spots you sitting on the couch, book in hand.
âIâm home darling.â He calls out, seeing you turn to him, giving him a small smile then turning back to your book.
His eyebrows draw together, he loves coming home and seeing you. Always so excited and giddy asking him about his day and telling him about yours but you didnât even respond to him.
âI brought the food you made back home, I wanted to reheat it and eat with you. We havenât spent time with each other in a while.â He speaks up, pulling his tie down a-bit as he still sees you reading your book.
Why werenât you responding? He thinks, youâre never this quiet.
âHave you eaten?â He pushes, trying to get something out of you, anything.
âNot hungry.â You answer, simple and quick. Not even looking away from your book this time.
He feels nervous. He feels something off.
âIâll heat it up, if you want some please eat.â He sighs, the tension is heavy but nothing happens. He knows somethingâs off with you.
In silence the duke eats alone on the table, sending you glances as you continue to turn the pages of your book. Not indulging him in your ranting heâs come to grow âannoyed ofâ. He made it clear earlier.
âThe food is delicious, thank you for making this.â He tires again, this time you look up. He smiles a bit but you do something that makes him believe something is off, you only send him a thumbs up in return.
He finishes his half and saves you yours for when you get hungry, putting it away and making his way to you.
âY/n darling. Is something the matter?â He asks, making his way closer to you. Seeing you shift uncomfortably from where you sit.
âNope.â You shake your head, not daring to look at him. You can feel him coming closer.
He kneels down, inspecting you. The corners of your eyes were a bit red, but nothing else seemed off. Were you feeling sick?
His hand reaches up to feel your forehead but you move away.
âIâm not sick.â You speak up as you dodge his touch. He feels his hand freeze.
âUse your words, whatâs wrong? Why arenât you talking to me?â He asks, placing hands next to both sides of your legs caging you in.
âIâm not one of your inmates, donât order me to do things.â You speak up, still not daring to look up at him, you can feel his piercing eyes on you.
Heâs taken aback at your response.
âIâm not ordering you y/n, Iâm just worried.â He sighs, pulling your book down to get you to look at him.
âI said Iâm fine, can I get back to reading?â You glance up at him. Trying your best to not let anything slip though. You donât want him to see how much his words hurt you.
He decides to stop, for now. He knows somethingâs wrong. Youâre too stubborn to tell him though.
He walks into your shared bedroom and into the bathroom to shower, racking his brain to think of what possibly could have made you so upset. The whole time he spends in there he canât think of why youâre refusing to respond properly.
Itâs already later when he gets out, the steam from the bathroom becoming visible when he opens the door.
He sees you in bed and he can help but feel at ease. You came to bed at least. He walks over to the closet eyes you as he does, a small smile making its way onto his lips at the sight of how you look.
He starts changing and notices youâre faced away from him. He quietly steps around and sees you hugging a pillow and he feels this heavy feeling in his chest again.
Did he do something?
He lays down next to you, you feel the bed dip and try your hardest to not turn around. Youâd probably hug him and start talking and annoy him again. He probably doesn't want that.
You feel like such a fool. All day his words have been affecting you. Youâre too scared to speak again.
You hug the pillow closer to you and feel your eyes burn once again. Hearing those words from him hurt more than anything. You donât want to show him how much it hurts you though. He doesnât need to know. He said what he said and whatâs done is done.
He lays there for a bit, the tension still surrounding you. Heâs unsure of what to do. He wants to hold you, pull you in but what if you move again.
Thatâs when he hears it, the small sound of sniffing. He freezes. His heart drops making him stand.
You feel the bed move and hear him stand, you think the worst. Maybe heâs leaving because heâs annoyed. He doesnât want to deal with this. You donât know why youâre crying but it wonât stop. He just told you something that bothered him and you took it too personally. Youâre both hurt and upset and you donât understand why.
Itâs quiet for a few seconds but then you feel a firm hand gently grab your arm, lifting you off the bed effortlessly.
You try to hide your face but Wriothesley has had enough of this.
âHey hey, look at me.â He softly calls out.
You try to hold it in but you feel more tears run down. Placing your hands on his chest and pushing him away but his sturdy frame doesnât budge.
âIâm fine, j-just tired.â You try to sound convincing despite your voice cracking. Struggling against his hold, pushing him a bit harder to move.
You resist in his hold and he feels his heart break even more.
âY/n whatâs wrong?â He grabs your hands, stopping your struggle and you look down, not wanting to look at him.
âNothing, Iâve talked enough today. I donât want to anymore.â You try to sound convincing, trying to pull your arms out of his grasp.
Heâs taken aback, talked too much? You havenât even talked at all. Where is this even coming from- oh.
oh
He stills, eyes boring into your head as you avoid his gaze.
âI didnât mean it earlier y/n. I didnât mean anything I said earlier. It doesnât excuse if I was mad or busy telling you that wasn't something I ever meant. I love hearing you talk. I love your voice. Donât ever think that I want you to stop.â He explains, knowing he was the reason for it all now. What a jerk heâs been.
He drops his head, resting it on yours. He waits a bit seeing if youâd pull away but you donât. âDarling, Iâm sorry. From the bottom of my heart I am. I miss hearing you talk. The house is eerily quieter without your beautiful voice and laughter echoing through these halls.â He speaks softly, hearing a small sob escape your lips.
You move back a bit, looking up at him and taking a breath. âBut you told me- I donât want to annoy you.â You hiccup, finally letting more tears fall. Itâs been eating you alive. It hurts. It hurts so bad because someone you love told you.
âNo no, youâd never, and you never ever had. Do you understand?â He makes it clear, seeing your pretty eyes filled with tears he grabs your face.
Your behavior makes sense now, how could he have been so mean to you? He truly is such a fool.
His hands slowly lift to your face, testing the waters to see if youâd pull away, but you donât pull back. âPlease talk to me. Donât hold back or hide your voice dear. Scold me, tell me what I did wrong.â He pleads, the look in his eyes desperate.
You nod, wiping your tears when he brings your head to his chest hugging you close. âPlease forgive me.â He repeats, squeezing you tighter when you let out a small âyesâ.
He holds you close, and though you said you forgive him. He canât take you for granted, not when youâre the best thing to ever come into his dull life. So he repeats it over and over, until you both fall asleep.
