Given what you said don't ignore this from the following sentence as it wont spoil or give any ruin to anything. I finished S3 of Amphibia within the last week and going back over the series and other series I just see a lot of writers not being able to commit to longer or more in depth series. Seems like the best series are the ones that KNOW they wont be longer than 3-4 seasons. I havent been too close to many TV shows but all shows nowadays are either limited or being canceled before they do anything worthwhile
From this.
I think it's fascinating you brought that up. I was talking with a friend this week about the trend of children's animation increasingly making long-term narrative arcs, and how there seems to be less focus on episodic children's animation.
I'm going to get rambly, veer all over the place, but more or less stay prompted by what you brought up.
It makes sense we've seen a renaissance of long-term plot forms. Streaming and binge culture allows people to reliably follow a story and see every episode, right? And so we've gotten Gravity Falls, She-Ra, Amphibia, The Owl House (at least from the few episodes I've seen), you name it. Since it's a recent phenomenon that we can safely tell long-term arcs, creators will dive into the new opportunity. I think that in most animation, we're going to see them veering there because They Can Now.
I celebrate the longer plot arcs. It's made beautiful art. And it's unlike periods that came before! At the same time, I hope the pendulum will eventually swing into the center. Once the newness of long-term structure fades, maybe we'll get more balanced numbers between shows that are one form versus the other, each show picking what is best for it.
And going to what you said about long-arc execution... writers have to know they will be able to finish it, right? And with the way Western media still cancels or renews its shows... Western media can't as safely create long-term media. Which means you're limited to:
Writing plots that have the length of an episode
Writing plots that have the length of a season, max
Writing long-term narratives with a specific several season goal, and hope you'll get renewed
Writing long-term narratives, but do so within a safe contract bet (that "they KNOW / are reasonably confident it won't be longer than 3-4 seasons)
Having an "oh, we'll just write, and figure out making that ending when cancellation starts threatening us" (terrible idea)
I think good writing, structure-wise, usually knows how long it's going, because you can't have good, incremental plot scaffolding without knowing your duration. If you're doing #3, you have your scaffolding prepared, but you could get cancelled before your structuring pays off. I see #5 happen more with live action adult media, and that's often a hit and miss, because you are forced, by the uncertain world of potential cancellation or unrenewed contracts, to adlib.
Getting back to Amphibia, even without me knowing what their contract situation was, I can tell they were operating on #3 or #4. Which means it's going to work better structurally.
I think it's fascinating. While I was writing my thoughts last night about Amphibia's structure, I knew that I could write an incredibly robust post about all the ways their scaffolding works. How they successfully implemented it. Because it's very structurally sound and there's tons there. The fact I was writing, from an emotional perspective, about whether I liked it... was going in the face of everything I logically saw working.
It's hard to pinpoint and/or vocalize, studying the well-implemented structural side, why my emotions weren't 100% sold with what I got S2. I can say things like, "It feels like Hop Pop, Sprig, and Polly aren't as integrally tied to the long-term narrative as they should be, given the centrality of family messages in S1," but I can also point to plot events like Hop Pop burying the box that were intended to be central to the long-term whatnot. I still think I'm right. I still think they're not as central, because long-term it is about King Andreas and Marcy and Sasha and Anne and stuff... and what does a farming frog contribute to toads trying to dominate the land?
But in the end, my post wasn't even intending to be structural. My post wasn't intended to say "this is working well or not." Because it is working well? It's just processing, from a purely emotional perspective, that my emotions were weird. It'll be interesting, as I watch S3, whether or not my emotions will or won't align with the structural implementation.
Obviously, you, as someone who's seen S3, will know how that structure plays out. And you will know whether the structure was good. I appreciate you respecting my request to have no hints, even in the slightest, of how S3 goes down, even in vibe. Maybe I'll poke you again about structure when I have completed S3 (probably pretty soon), and talk about that phenomenon you brought up.
I do want more shows that are episodic again. That's a way to escape non-commitment to longer plot arcs, being limited, or being cancelled before going anywhere.
I don't know if I tackled anything you were thinking about, since I went all over the place. But I enjoyed your thoughts. It's cool to reflect on.
Absolutely! I definitely blew over the core points of "why" it happens but I can totally agree on the Amphibia points. Almost a Chekovs nerf gun instead. Cant wait for your S3 analysis

Okay but do you wanna know something FUN?!
If we assume elves count/reckon numbers in base 8 (aka octal aka a numbering system where each grouping of 8 is a “ten”, and the numbering goes 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 20 etc etc, and therefore 10 = 8, 11 = 9, 12 = 10, 13 = 11, etc etc)
In this system multiplication by SEVEN makes this trick work for Rayla. AND - and and, get this, the brilliant thing?
52 in octal is five “tens” (eights), making it four of our tens, 40, plus 2.
In the system we understand, 6 x 7 is 42.
So this system absolutely works for Rayla and gets mathematically correct answers, we just need to translate it into a system that works for 8-fingered beings :D
I had the same exact thought! But consider some lore theories now:
We know that humans and elves shared the world for a bit. Long enough to have cities (at least by human standards). If they were making trade agreements then surely they had a standardized counting system. I'm assuming base 10 because humans are stubborn and complain "you have magic, just give us this". Once the rift happens the elves keep the system because it's been in place so long that it would be nearly impossible to replace.
I do totally agree that any species would count to base # of fingers though. Theres a fun video on why the Simpsons (who have 4 fingers) count in base 10.
I’m so tired of plot reveals where the twist is “OH MY GOSH! THE PERSON IS ACTUALLY A WOMAN!”
As though women aren’t participants in anything human culture has to offer and don’t make up half the human population.
Whether the revealed character is a villain, a skilled master, or anything else… women aren’t a shock factor. Women are an omnipresent element of daily life.
Plot twist: Woman saves a tribe from goblins and reveals herself.
"AHA but I'm a woman!"
Some very-inclusive tribe

What do you mean chaotic dumbass isnt a character alignment?
Just had the first taste of coffee in my life because the shop messed up my order.
What… what the FUCK. What the fuck is WRONG with you guys? Why are you voluntarily drinking this!?! It tastes like bitter nightmares died and rotted in a cup.
If I could play devil’s advocate for a moment: was it a dark roast that you tasted? Because yeah those taste pretty awful. But some of the lighter roasts are a lot less soul-sucking.
I do think plain or lightly-altered coffee works better as part of a group; like, having it with breakfast or dessert or something, the way people pair certain wines with certain meats. Drinking it by itself isn’t the best.
Just in light of wanting to be respectful to all, I hope it’s clear that my comment at the top was meant in humorous jokingness and not to criticize peoples’ beverage choices. I honestly hate when people criticize my tastes because all our interests are valid and harmless. XD Ya’ll are valid for liking coffee. But in case some people didn’t pick up on the tone, yeah. I’m intending to chat cheerily and flippantly.
Anyway! XD :D :D
Given as I have no frame of reference for what coffee-thing I drank, I don’t know what it was. They labeled the cup wrong; it was labeled as the tea I had ordered. So, all I know is that this was supposed to be someone else’s order and they got the labels swapped.
I remember the one and only time I tried alcohol, it was supposed to be a “sweet,” very dessert-y one. My friend next to me said it “tasted so sweet” and was gawking at how great it was. I thought it was horrifyingly bad and couldn’t taste any of the sweetness people put into it. Without the frame of reference of other alcoholic beverages, I could just taste the alcohol. Knowing that there were alcoholic beverages that were more/less alcohol-tasting didn’t change my dislike for the base taste or the sensory prevalence I felt with my one-time experience.
That’s how it felt with this coffee. So whether or not this was a dark roast or something with more milk and flavorings in it, I don’t know. I just know I didn’t like the base flavor and that that’s not going to change with sweeter add-ins. I’m glad you enjoy coffee and find it good in contexts like you mentioned. It won’t be for me, but that’s okay too. :) We can all find the respective drinks we love.
I suppose, if any of you want to know, I won’t feel comfortable with people trying to convince me to try coffee again, saying “in other contexts it tastes fine; with other flavorings it tastes fine; try something else.” I had intentionally chosen to live my entire life without coffee. So the fact I tasted it is at all is disappointing, too. It broke the lifelong pact I had with myself. Though, I can take solace in the fact it happened by accident. I’ve made several intentional life pacts with myself, and I live strictly by them - sort of hard to explain them but yeah I have those. Sorry about that. ^.^ Keep drinking your coffee and loving it! Sorry I’ve got no more info for what I tasted! And always good chatting with you.
I’m sorry if I came off as confrontational, that wasn’t my intent 😅 I was more trying to explain what some people might see (taste?) in the beverage than suggesting you try it again. I completely respect not wanting to break a personal pact.
I’m actually in a similar situation regarding the taste of alcohol. I’ve singled out exactly one I like on its own (the other one I actually put in coffee XD) and while it’s great knowing that peer pressure to drink will never be a problem for me because more likely than not I won’t enjoy the drink anyway, I feel left out a lot of the time because other people seem to enjoy the drinks so much. I’ll still try one whenever I’m offered, but more often than not my first thought after tasting is “ew, this tastes like alcohol.” Followed by the second thought, which is “well, duh.”
Oh no no no no no no no, absolutely NOTHING sounded confrontational for a second! <3 You’re good! <3 <3 I was trying to be proactive and cover 200 bases and explain things thoughtfully in my tags+comments that you were 110% fine, but I must’ve sounded bad, muddled, and weird anyway. Whoops, sorry. You sounded really friendly and conversant. You didn’t sound like you were trying to suggest I take it again. It definitely came across as someone explaining an alternate perspective and it was great. I just wanted to cover my bases for other people, and I’m sorry if my response sounded like I thought you specifically were being that. Honestly thanks for talking to me back and forth on this - I’m having fun! :)
It’s an interesting situation you bring up: the social aspect of drinks. I get a bit what you mean about alcohol. I don’t feel pressured to drink it, but I feel left out too because it’s a common cultural thing for people to do. And people use it as a means of socializing with others. I feel incredibly awkward turning people down, because I know they were just trying to include me in a group bonding moment, and I want everyone to know I support them 100% and want to bond with them too.
Some people legitimately cannot taste bitter. That helps
I always considered myself 49/51 introvert/extrovert except when I get drunk I got full out extrovert...
