With the F1 Movie release lingering closer and closer, it’s time to have an uncomfortable conversation.

Forgive me for going all feminist on you (I’m not sorry), but have a seat and let’s chat, yeah?

Let’s discuss the negative impact this movie is going to have on women in motorsport as well as female fans, shall we?

Of course the obvious conversation is about the women working in motorsport. Imagine how poorly the plot is going to reflect on them. Why? Oh, well let’s see. You’ve got an entire plot that revolves around the main character (who’s played by a misogynistic wife beater, by the way, great casting choice!) sleeping with his fucking female engineer.

Now bear in mind how that’s going to negatively affect the PR of women working in motorsport. Especially Laura Mueller, who is the sport’s first ever female race engineer in its entire 75 year history. Who literally already has incels on the internet saying the only way she got her job is because she slept with someone.

And of course, consider the female fans.

There are so many of us out here every day fighting with male fans who think we “don’t know anything” and “only watch F1 because the drivers are hot.” We are constantly ostracized in this fucking sport and feeling like we have to prove that we’re even allowed to like it.

Can you imagine how poorly the F1 Movie will reflect on us?

All this movie is going to do is push the harmful, negative stereotype that F1 is a “man’s world.” It’s just going to make women feel like they don’t belong in a sport where they already feel shoved aside.

So, and maybe I’m being a little dramatic here, but if you happen to know a female F1 fan, please be kind to her. Please check on her.

And to all my ladies, we do belong in this sport. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. 💜💜

It kinda just feels almost impossible to be a female F1 fan. Whenever I mention I'm an F1 fan multiple men will say "Oh well what does DRS stand for" (Daniel Ricciardo supremacy, btw) or "Name 5 world champions". Sometimes they'll even say "Yeah, I bet you only watch for the drivers looks" (someone has soem slef discovery to do but okay). It's honestly just exhausting.

But on a lighter note when I heard of Laura Muller being the first female F1 race eningeer at the start of the year I was so happy! Go her <3

I still haven't decided. Death.)

I have about a trillion great ideas to write but it's so hard to actually... Write. Start from scratch, not just the story but writing in ao3 altogether. Especially because I know I have some very specific Ideas that sometimes feel just self indulgent

The only reason I haven't scrapped the whole thing is that I remember @blue-sunshine-mauve-morning and Desert Storm and I see a golden standard of what I want to do (in a larger scope) and I know it Can Work

But then I know even if I get it off the floor I'd then struggle keeping on if nobody or their dog reads it in what's such a CROWDED fandom (I'd rather blow up than share with people who Know Me)

I feel like people miss the point of the "war is bad" message

What it's supposed to mean is that war is terrible, it's destructive, it ruins lives, it leaves scars, and you should only partake in it when there are no other options, because even if you win, even if you survive, you will not be the same, which is why the phrase used to be more commonly known as "war is hell"

But "war is bad" seems to have been construed by people in fandom (and more worryingly in real life too) into "any fighting is bad, if you fight you're morally terrible and impure, you should not fight at all, no matter what"

And that's almost never the point of "War is Bad" works

Works like lotr, atla, transformers, the clone wars, etc all have themes on how horrible war is, but they categorically do not say it is wrong to fight, what they say is usually along the lines of "war is terrible, and what makes it so terrible is that we have no choice but to fight, it would be ideal if we didn't have to fight at all, but we must fight, because not fighting is not an option, because not fighting, not opposing tyranny, conquest, and evil only allows those things to exist unimpeded"

i’ve never understood the idea that the jedi arrogantly refused to believe the dark side was rising in the prequels/clone wars. that is just… so blatantly not what we see

when qui-gon first brings it up in the phantom menace they don’t really believe it, sure, mostly because to their knowledge they haven’t seen a sith lord in a millennia, so it is a wild idea. this initial denial has consequences, sure, but it’s hardly the all-encompassing arrogance that people accuse them of.

and then at the end of the very same movie the question is literally posed OUT LOUD if they killed the master or apprentice- they know there’s another out there!!! the problem is they just don’t have the slightest idea on where to look first, especially with palpatine clouding their vision with the dark side.

then they also have a hard time believing initially that dooku is a sith- not because they don’t think there’s a sith around, but because they KNOW dooku, loved and trusted him even, and are having a hard time believing he’d do such terrible things. but once they see it for themselves, they do fully acknowledge that dooku is a sith and has fallen to the dark side.

the jedi KNOW by the end of tpm that the dark side is rising in power. they KNOW that there are sith around. they’re not denying anything, and are actively even working against it, but their vision is being intentionally clouded by a bad faith actor.

they are just struggling to put the pieces together and figure out the best way to handle it (while also dealing with every other problem the galaxy has that gets put on their shoulders and eventually a whole ass WAR), and unfortunately, once they figure it all out it’s too late.

Some additional notes:

With the Qui-Gon and Maul thing, it's not like Qui-Gon had any actual evidence that the person who attacked him was a Sith. I mean sure, he had a red lightsaber, but red lightsabers are just the result of the crystal being corrupted by the dark side, and we have several canon examples of dark side users who have red lightsabers but are not affiliated with the Sith at all. See: Taron Malicos, Dagan Gera, and Bode Akuna. All Sith are dark siders but not all dark siders are Sith, that sorta thing. So while the red blade certainly gives reason to think it could be a Sith, it's not exactly definitive confirmation. And while there were witnesses to the fight, they didn't exactly have any recordings or pictures or anything. Basically, Qui-Gon had no way of giving them actual evidence, just a hunch and his word that those evil guys they thought all died ages ago are back. And well, if someone told you that they got jumped by fucking Hitler or Genghis Khan or something but had no way of proving it, you'd probably be skeptical. Ki-Adi-Mundi had every reason to think these claims were impossible with the very limited information he had, but he had the audacity to sound kinda stuffy while saying it and everyone just decided he's the worst for that I guess. And like, they DO decide it's worth investigating. They find out Padme's going back to Naboo and they tell Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan to go with her AND to find out more about their mysterious attacker. So even though they were skeptical about it being a Sith, they apparently still decided that, Sith or not, it's still a problem worth looking into.

With Dooku, it's actually a kinda similar situation. Padme just says that she thinks Dooku was the one who tried to have her killed but gives no real reason for why she thinks this (which admittedly might just be a flaw in the writing lol). And even though Dooku is currently leading a movement that wants to secede from the Republic and tensions are high, as far as they know, he hasn't actually done anything to make them think he could do something like this. They later find out that he WAS responsible for Padme's attempted assassination and that he HAS been planning to attack the Republic. But that all happens later in the movie, AFTER they specifically sent Obi-Wan to INVESTIGATE it.

Basically these are both just cases of a main character just having a hunch, and their hunch of course ends up being right because they're a main character, but in both cases I think the limited information the Jedi have makes it pretty reasonable for them to NOT just immediately jump to the same conclusion.

Likewise, everyone gives Obi-Wan shit for not immediately believing Dooku when he says Darth Sidious is secretly controlling the Senate. Despite the fact that like a minute ago Dooku claimed there were no bounty hunters here even though Obi-Wan just followed a bounty hunter there, or how Dooku also claims that Gunray was betrayed by Sidious and that their goal is to destroy the Sith which is also not true. So he's not exactly doing a good job at seeming like someone whose word you can trust. But then also at the end of the movie we see that Obi-Wan TOLD the others about Dooku's claim and Mace says they should keep a closer eye on the Senate just in case. And no, they shouldn't have just immediately assumed that if Sidious is secretly controlling the Senate then he MUST be the Chancellor, in the same way that if you find out there's a secret conspiracy to take over the American government then you shouldn't immediately assume it's the president, or if there's a conspiracy to take over the UN you shouldn't just assume it's the Secretary General, just because they're the most prominent public figure. You can't just jump to conclusions and act on assumptions without proof or you'll just end up creating even MORE problems.

Also you might notice a common thread here where these are all just cases of "people get mad at the characters for not magically knowing things the audience knows even though the plot demands that they can't figure it out so as not to break the timeline cause it's a prequel". So. There's that.

like the Jedi weren't just wiped out physically; their memory has been flat out obliterated. let's not forget Palpatine didn't just have the Jedi order destroyed, he got the senate to cheer for him while he did it.

we live in an age of alternative facts - it's not difficult to imagine. oh you remember seeing the Jedi using the force live on space TV? no you didn't. the Jedi order is ancient history, they fell a really long time ago. 50 years? a hundred? something like that. we don't believe in that kind of superstition anymore. kinda sad that they're gone i guess but it was progress.

People need to stop Bitching About Fallout Retconning Lore

I'm going to be honest - I'm sad Shady Sands, a town i have saved multiple times, and a fictional Nation I have helped build, is gone. I'm also sad that NV is now probably non-canonical.

But so the fuck what?

This is just SO "baby's first media franchise" to me.

Guess what? New Vegas was a one off deal when Bethesda, a Corporation who owns total rights to the Fallout Franchise, allowed another Company to use their IP. Not only that, but basically just... gave their ENTIRE Engine, Code, and DevNotes for Fallout 3 and said 'go nuts, we know how much you love fallout.'

That is such a wildly unprecedented move. I literally can't think of anything similar beyond Sony and Disney agreeing to split Spider-Man but even THAT is different because they share publishing rights to the Same Character, but only in different mediums. Imagine DC just... letting Image Comics publish canonical stories about Batman because Bob Kane happened to be working there at the moment.

It was a great, lightning in the bottle experience, that now exists in its own continuity. Now let's move on.

This is SO common in media and storytelling, especially with these massive franchises with decades of lore and baggage they carry around. It's why DC has a reboot every six years (and why marvel comics needs to lowkey), and why Disney scrapped the Star Wars EU. No one likes having to work off of someone else's script or outline - people want to make their own thing with their own take and influence.

New Vegas is also... still a video game you can play? Todd Howard didn't go into all your houses and shoot your copy. Your computer and xboxes haven't been purged. New Vegas still exists - it just won't influence anything going forward.

There is so much shit in the world right now that just sucks, thats sad and is an absolute bummer. Fallout has always taken that bummer world, cranked the bummer and the fun up to 30 and let it go wild. The very unique vibe and energy of the Fallout Show feels like it came DIRECTLY from the games!

When Lucy walked into Filly, I felt like how I did the first time I stepped into Shaddy Sands and Megaton. Cutting off the head of a person you sorta know and just... doing it? because its easier to carry? Finding a vault, immediately getting sidetracked by whatever weird shit they have going on, then leaving with a 'Huh.'

It's just SO Fallout.

Be Happy that you're getting new, genuinely interesting and engaging content, be sad that the content you love won't be going forward but take solace that you still have it. And don't fucking rage post about it on every single social media for christs sake.
