PHD Learner Interview - Tamara Chapman - Capella University
This was a treat!! I got to interview one of my friends I met years ago on Twitter. She also happened to be a student with Capella University! Through the years we ended up supporting each other during our academic journey. Since connecting, Tamara completed her Masters degree and is now pursuing her PHD. Here's her story...
She's so inspirational!! Even though I conducted the interview, I'm finding myself watching her message over and over again. It's people like Tamara that keep me going at my job - those that are so passionate about education and making a difference in the world.
How has education changed your life?
Today I did a Google Hangout with Dr. Patrick LaRose (@rnpatl) - a PHD grad in the education and healthcare industry. Our topic was the future of social media. BRILLANT conversation!!
It's Been Busy!
It's been busy. Those are three words that hold a lot of truth lately...but in a very exciting way. This year has been packed with experimentation, product launches, and traveling. Capella has gone to great lengths to explore social media and its true potential for our current and future learners. Here's what's been shaking...
Experimentation:
First I'll start with the experimentation. I've become a BIG fan of Google Hangouts and see it as a terrific way to connect with our learners and hear their story. Here are just a few Hangout interviews I've done:
I'm still trying to wrap my head around how I should structure these videos. A big problem is that I don't have enough interviews in one category since I'm doing these whenever I have free time...which isn't very often. To me, these seem like they would be valuable to those considering going back to school. Heck, these could even be helpful for current students to see what others are currently up to and what's next for them after completing their degree. One thing's for sure...I'm connecting with some amazing people with powerful stories. Tune in this Friday for a live Hangout with a current PHD learner!!
Traveling
I've recently been asked to attend some internal and external events and bring live social media coverage - essentially helping Capella become more visible online. The first tip was one of our PHD Colloquium event in Arlington, VA. There I was able to help our learners share their Colloquia experience mainly through Twitter by using the hashtag #CapellaJourney. This was a completely new idea and something we plan to universally use throughout a learners journey with Capella. That way, future learners can look back and follow others on their journey as well as network with them. For a visual summary of the experience, check out the Storify I put together.
In addition to live-tweeting, I had a social media booth set up throughout the 3-day colloquium. Learners started coming up to me with questions about social media and the value behind it from an academic standpoint. I started sharing mini tutorials with them about how they can use Twitter to perform keyword searches around their dissertation topics and quickly connect with other people around the world that already share the same passion and are possible SME's in those areas. Since Twitter is mostly public, you don't have to have a relationship or connection with others, so you can jump in and reply to someone post and start a meaningful conversation with anyone. This concept really connected with the students and soon I was giving tutorials to the entire class! It was fun to empower them and see them get excited over technology that sometimes can seem intimidating!
Finally, I also found time to interview a few learners that were at the end of their colloquium journey. Here's a playlist containing 4 inspiring interviews:
Seriously, I felt like I needed to pick up a textbook and read something after I was done chatting with them! :) While I know they're raw...nothing fancy, it's a start. I've shared them with other learners and so many have found it valuable, which tells me we're onto something!! I'll be heading to the next Colloquium in Orlando just after Christmas...so more to come!
In addition to internal events, I've also started to attend conventions. One in particular was the Nursing Magnet Convention in Orlando, FL. We had a booth for Capella and were looking for a fun way to attract Nurse Leaders to our booth. The team brainstormed and decided to create something that would provide value to anyone that stopped by...we would take their picture with their smartphone as they stood next to our repeat banner with their "one word" that defined what Nurse Leadership meant to them. Again, we also used a hashtag...this time is was #NurseLeader and encouraged all to share their picture on Twitter. The campaign was a huge success!! Essentially, we drove more awareness around Capella by providing people with something valuable and personal to them. Click here to see the Storify summary.
Product Launch
My biggest baby this year was launching our first private learner community that's housed in Facebook. I was researching the product for almost 2 years, provided Capella with several demos, and in September, we finally launched it! The rollout is happening in phases, but so far we've had nearly 5,000 learners sign up to use the private community and they're loving it!
Essentially, it's an application they install inside their personal Facebook accounts. Once they opt in/install it, they can access the private community where they can meet other Capella students in a variety of ways: academic similarities, hobbies and interests, and location. It short, it's a one stop shop for them to feel more connected to their university while receiving support from each other and making new friends. No video demos here...I'm keeping it private until we decide to scale this for the entire university. More to come...but very exciting!
Thoughts? Leave a comment!! Would love to hear your feedback, questions, or ideas!
Yep, it's video's like this that give me goose pimples!!! :)

The online university has added a PsyD in School Psychology, a PhD in Business Management, an MS in Higher Education, and 10 graduate-level specializations
MINNEAPOLIS, January 24, 2012 – Capella University, an accredited online university* that has built its reputation by providing high-quality online degree programs for working adults, has announced 13 new educational offerings. They include a PsyD in School Psychology, and an MS in Higher Education with three specializations in Adult Education, Enrollment Management, and Higher Education Leadership and Administration. Capella has also launched a PhD in Business Management with five specializations in Finance, General Business Management, Human Resource Management, Leadership, and Marketing; and expanded its Doctor of Business Administration program, adding two new specializations, in Human Resource Management, and Leadership. PsyD in School Psychology is first such program available online Capella's new degree program is designed to provide licensed school psychologists with the opportunity to further their education without putting their careers on hold and help fulfill the current need for doctoral-educated school psychologists. Modeled on national standards for school psychology, Capella's PsyD in School Psychology includes online course work, graduate teaching opportunities, and field experiences. The first and only PsyD in School Psychology offered online, the program covers such areas as consultation, supervision, evaluation, research and planning, ethics, and intervention and prevention strategies. Capella's instructors are all doctoral-level, licensed school psychologists with years of frontline experience, providing students with real-world insight and valuable mentoring. The new program expands the university's offerings in the field of school psychology, which also includes an MS in Psychology, School Psychology specialization, and a post-master's Specialist Certificate in School Psychology.
Capella's new doctoral business offerings help address the global shortage of qualified business faculty "There's a shortage of doctoral-qualified faculty in nearly every business discipline due to the growth in undergraduate and MBA business programs and the escalating number of Baby Boomer retirements," said William Reed, PhD, dean of Capella's School of Business and Technology. "To help meet that demand, we have launched our new PhD in Business Management with five in-demand specializations: Finance, General Business Management, Human Resource Management, Leadership, and Marketing. We are also adding two specializations to our DBA program, Human Resource Management, and Leadership, to offer additional subject matter choices to those more focused on corporate leadership or consulting roles, but who may also want to teach. Whether the goal is to teach, research, lead, or consult, we provide a range of business doctoral choices to help our adult students achieve their professional goals and address today's business needs."
New online master's degree focuses on higher education topics Capella created a new Master of Science in Higher Education to address the specific issues faced by faculty and administrators in higher education, including cultural and academic diversity; strategies for teaching, assessing and measuring higher education and adult students; the use of technology to improve learning; and the development of business skills needed to lead and manage change in higher education institutions.
The three MS in Higher Education specializations include Enrollment Management, which is the only online program that also includes professional certification from Noel-Levitz, a nationally recognized consulting firm specializing in higher education recruitment and retention. Capella also offers a specialization in Higher Education Leadership and Administration, which includes a choice of emphases in either Community College Leadership or Higher Education Program Administration. The third master's specialization, Adult Education, covers such topics as collaborative learning, program development for adult students, and diverse learning styles.
As of September 30, 2011, more than 35,000 students are pursuing an online degree at Capella University (http://www.capella.edu), with nearly 80 percent enrolled in Capella's doctoral degree programs and master's degree programs.

Capella University - Make A Difference [Vid]
My desk this morning at the office. All these devices make for great space heaters as well! :)
Just when I thought that I had mentioned all that I could have ever imagined about the wonderment that surrounds the community and the intellectual “hugs” that are associated with being a Capella University learner, my alma mater has accomplished another fantastic feat. On December 28, 2011, the prestigious and world-renowned Geoffrey Canada will be presenting during a Live Stream on a topic entitled, “Leading the Way”. The anticipation that I have about this entire discussion can barely be put into words.
There are probably very few educators at this point who have not at least heard of the movie “Waiting for Superman”. Teachers in all types of schools across the globe had to at least take interest in re-evaluating the state of education once the movie was released. Others probably had discussion groups soon after. However, Mr. Canada is more than a star in a movie. To many educators, he is a trailblazer. My plan is to be prompt in my arrival (online) and to be diligent in hearing the current message that is so timely before the start of the new year. I know I will go back to the classroom inspired. This one meeting is a testament to the power of online learning, especially when future Capella learners, current learners, staff, and alumni have such an excellent school like Capella University leading the way.
