One thing young women need to realise is that patriarchy is obsessed with instilling into us hate for older women and we mustn’t let it succeed.

I recently had to go on a placement at a nursing home. I went with a friend of mine, both of us young, small, non threatening. The first thing we saw upon entering was an old man, probably 80 or thereabouts. He approached us and whispered, “I’m going to fuck you”.

Obviously taken aback, we quickly reported this to the manager, a man, who laughed and said that’s what that resident always does. For the rest of our visit, this old man chased us round repeating his earlier words. He even came up to me and said I don’t usually do girls like you but you’ll do. I assume this was because I am Black.

All the staff members, majority younger women, laughed while we had to endure his harassment. It got so bad that I literally went into another room and he stared at me through the window. This continued until some female residents came down. When he approached us once again, one of the older woman literally grabbed me and stood in front of me. He was much taller than either of us, she used a cane and I later learnt that she had dementia. Still, she saw that two younger women needed help and didn’t think twice about calling out the man’s harassment.

So anytime I see and hear the constant ageist propaganda being fed to us, about how growing old is the worst thing that can happen to a woman, or that old women or all racist, sexist, homophobic, backwards women, I remember who laughed as I was being harassed.

I think that in real life…. Relationships r like . Your partner WILL ‘trauma dump’ on you. You will have to perform ‘emotional labor’ for your partner. Your partner will make mistakes. You will also do all of these things. The very nature of love is irrational and problematic and difficult …. To expect a relationship to be free of these things is strange to me…. The point is that your relationship to that person is ultimately worth it, and worth growing with them, helping each other, seeing the worst parts of another person and being able to love them anyway
