I might just be a fake buggy angst lover cause religiously reading depressing Buggy fics didn't prepare me to see him getting tortured and abused by Mihawk and Crocodile😭 I think people tend to see this stuff as more of a gag because they only perceive Buggy as a gag character, but also because we are used to seeing characters like Luffy get beaten up by their crews. However, I think Oda makes it clear there's a difference between how Cross-Guild beat up Buggy vs. the Straw Hats beating up Luffy.
Omg I get where you’re coming from so much. Sometimes I feel like the odd one out for actually taking buggy’s torture seriously and not thinking it’s funny. And it’s odd because yeah there are a lot of gags where Luffy and others get beat up by their crews but those scenes don’t usually involve Luffy sobbing and being taken to a literal torture chamber. You can argue it started as a gag (despite the fact I think it was always somewhat serious) but by the time Buggy makes his speech it’s clear we’re supposed to take it seriously.
And honestly? I want to talk about the cross guild scenes more. Let’s look at some and analyze them because I think the anime uses a great mix of comedic effects with serious emotions to create an off-putting vibe. First is how usually he gets tortured, it’s always because of something outlandish and comedic, like his crew making him the center of the cross-guild poster.
Then the effects are oddly severe and brutal for a “gag character” like buggy. With some emotions even brought up.
Same with the boat situation. his crews screw up is funny but then the mood changes and it’s all suddenly oddly grim for “slap stick” look at the difference in tones in this one scene alone.
We even see his crew look away as you hear his screams here. No comedic sound effects. no music. nothing.
This scene is right before his speech. Actually This odd mix of comedic and grim energy is in almost every scene until buggy’s speech. It throws the viewer off. It makes us think “This is comedic right? I’m supposed to be laughing!” But now since his speech you can look back and re-contextualize these scenes. You can see that the serious tone has always been there. Hidden In plain sight. They even play around with that “slap stick” (not comedic) vibe in an extremely small and easy to miss part in buggy’s declaration too.
At the risk of sounding pretentious as fuck I’m gonna analyze this entire scene. This scene happens right after he remembers leaving shanks. We see Buggy declaring he wants to obtain the one piece using rogers exact words while doing so. (I’ll get back to that soon) Then we cut to his hands reaching out to an imaginary light.
I think they animated it like this on purpose. Buggy is hypothetically reaching towards a light when making this speech. the “light” being his dreams. And those dreams are also his freedom from the shackles we see on him while reaching out. Next we see the silly boat that got him into this mess to begin with in that same bright light.
This boat being here means a lot because yeah it got him tortured but being tortured is what pushed him to chase his dreams. That’s why this boat I think is being shown in the same light he was reaching towards. It’s his freedom. And of course you set sail on a boat, which in itself is to get away and be free. Buggy continues his speech before being interrupted by Mihawk and crocodile. This is the “slap stick” part. We see the boat splitting in half with a silly sound effect. Much like buggy’s body can do with his devil fruit abilities.
Which also serves as a stand in for crocodile literally impaling him, and trying to cut into his dreams. then it cuts to buggy’s hands in reality, still stuck. shackled and impaled. The scene turns grim again and we even see his blood on crocodiles hook.
The use of somewhat comedic imagery and sounds during this small segment is something I actually like a lot. The scene before with shanks was silent other than him and shanks voices and heavy rain. after the segment I showed in the video doesn’t have those type of sound effects either. It reminds us of the grim reality that buggy is living through the same way Buggy must have been reminded. To me, It not only shows buggy’s warped perception while undergoing extreme physical torture but also the fact that he’s a literal clown declaring something that seems impossible to people much stronger than him. It’s like he’s breaking from his mold and going “out of character” in a way. despite the “comedic” flare I believe oda wants us to take this speech seriously, buggy’s declaration of freedom is similar to one’s we’ve seen in the series before. It’s just a less traditionally sympathetic character doing it.
Y’know what? Let’s get back to the light thing. After the scene I talked about earlier buggy stands up for himself and continues to speak despite everything mihawk and crocodile are putting him through. As we see him being brave in a way that felt impossible for his character before now we see that light come onto him again.
But it’s not metaphorical anymore because crocodile himself created the light by hurting him. Literally and metaphorically because the light = him chasing his dreams. Crocodile gave him more spirit to do what he always wanted in his life. Why are rogers words being used by buggy important? buggy is the man that chose to go the easy route. He said shanks had more potential and gave up on his own dreams of following in rogers footsteps. So when shanks decided he couldn’t follow their late captains legacy Buggy ran. He ran from shanks. He ran from rogers legacy. and ran from facing himself. He’s been that teenager that ran away his entire life.
Until now. Now he decided he’ll be the one to follow rogers legacy. He won’t sit back and live an unfulfilled life. He won’t continue to use shanks not following rogers footsteps as an excuse to not chase his dreams as an adult anymore. He’s proving he’s always understood what it means to be a pirate. To be free. He’s showing he always understood who Roger was. Similar to how Luffy accidentally freed shanks, Crocodile and shanks are the ones to indirectly liberate buggy so to speak. To free him from the shackles of the status quo. He says so himself. Who do we think he’s really talking about here?
Off of buggy for a moment, Crocodile is another reason I think rogers words being used here is important. I’ll explain. First let’s look at crocodile. Throughout this entire scene you can notice that crocodile is far more enraged then Mihawk.
In the manga you can see him destroy his own cigar with his teeth. He’s also the one who tries to stop buggy from continuing his speech by stepping on him while yelling “stop it, buggy!”
Him using buggy’s name stands out to me a lot. Despite his treatment of buggy being dehumanizing He doesn’t usually address him in such a humanizing manner. If that makes sense. I say his anger is because of his own lost dream. The one that he gave up on just like buggy did.
To be pirate king. Crocodile hates buggy more because buggy’s speech means something to him. Something happened to crocodile in his life as a pirate captain that made him give up on his dreams and like buggy, remain too afraid of the emotional damage he can get by chasing it again throughout his life. Crocodile understands what Buggy means because he is the same as buggy. That’s why he says Buggy has “delusions of grandeur” because like Buggy did to shanks as a teen when he called shanks a coward crocodile is projecting onto buggy how he felt when he chased those dreams. I also think he truly believes chasing those dreams to be delusion. That freedom is delusion. The difference between them is that instead of blaming others he decided to obtain more power to ensure he won’t be hurt again. Crocodile “ran” by hiding behind baroque works and manipulating others with his position and strength similar to how buggy hid behind his men. Crocodiles is just a “business decision” in his eyes.
back to the speech. We of course see that boat again. But this time it’s put back together and on the ocean ready to sail. (I think this shows that his team had also indirectly helped him get here via getting him in trouble with that boat to begin with.)
This actually made me realize another reason Luffy dislikes buggy so much, it’s not so much him but what he represents. He had been a coward his entire life. He blamed others for himself not chasing his dreams. He blamed a great man like shanks instead of accepting he had let himself become a slave to his own insecurities and fears of chasing his dreams. Luffy can read people well so I think he can sense that off of buggy. This makes me wonder.. what does this speech mean to Mihawk? What exactly happened to crocodile and will he ever change as well? Will buggy go back to his old ways? And most importantly, will buggy continue to despise shanks?
Thank you for the ask! I completely used it as an opportunity to over-analyze these scenes and of course buggy! I hope you like it! Also, I know I’ve been taking a longggg time with answering my asks. I have so many so I decided to take it slow as to not mess up the quality. Thanks again! ✨
