“I’d literally rather be anywhere but here.” Ethan huffed, watching a few of his teammates walk inside the small restaurant. Grayson sat beside him, scrolling through his phone, waiting for his brother to stop sulking in his own self-pity. “For someone who’s about to be a legal adult, you act so much like a child.” Grayson scoffed, locking his phone and placing it in his pocket. “We have literally dreamed of coming to this dinner since we were freshman.” Grayson added, rolling his eyes and opening the car door, leaving his brother alone in the car.
Grayson was right, but Ethan would never admit that, not even on his deathbed. The two of them had been dreaming about this since freshman year, being invited to this dinner meant everything for their future. This wasn’t just a normal celebratory dinner for the senior football players, this was the dinner where you were given your offers from some of the top schools in the United States. Ethan wanted to excited, he really did, his future was about to be decided within the next few hours, but after what happened last night, it’s hard to be excited about anything. Especially being near the person who ruined one of the best nights of his life, by doing some stupid shit, as always.
‘Speak of the devil...’ Ethan thought, noticing a familiar looking car, and a scummy looking face sitting behind the wheel. Charles Cox, everything down to the way he walked annoyed Ethan, everything about that boy made his skin crawl. His eyesight only shifted when he heard a ‘ding’ emit from his phone, Grayson’s name flashed across the screen. All his text said was, ‘Coach wants you inside. Now.’ This made a pit in his stomach form, nerves stacking on top of his anger. Something was going to pop off tonight, just like last night, but ten times worse.
The restaurant was dimly lit, the hostess greeted Ethan with a smile and a major case of googly eyes. Not to sound too cocky, but he’d gotten use to the longing stares from females, sometimes even males, he just learned to brush them off. “How can I help you?” the hostess asked, twirling some of her cheaply dyed hair around her index finger, popping some gum between her teeth. Ethan opened his mouth to answer, but before any sound could leave his lips, someone cut him off. It was an irking voice, one that matched perfectly with the irritating face of Charles.
“He’s with us.” Cox chuckled, giving the hostess a flirtatious wink, causing her face to turn a shade of pink. Ethan nearly gagged at his actions, and walked past the two without a word. Cox was quick to follow, and sling an arm around Ethan’s shoulders. It took every fiber of his being not to take his arm and break it in two, but instead shrugged it off quickly. “What’s up, brother?” He asked, sparking up small talk as the two walked towards the back of the restaurant. “Not much, Charles. Not much.” His name felt like venom in Ethan’s mouth.
The minutes and even seconds seemed to drag on for years. People creating conversations about things that don’t matter, testosterone at an extreme level, and obnoxious laughs filled the room. Ethan sat between his brother and Lucas, one of the few football players he was actually cool with. And of course, right across from him, there sat Cox with his shit-eating grin.
Ethan allowed himself to space out, not wanting to hear Cox’s voice more than he needed too. His mind jumped between different thoughts, before suddenly, his mind landed on something unusual, but something that had become more usual within the last few weeks.
You. He started thinking about you.
He wasn’t sure why you had been popping into his mind as of recently. Obviously he saw you on the field last night, hell, you were a few feet away from him. It caught him off-guard, he hadn’t seen you at a football game since junior year, since his and Grayson’s first Varsity game. He smiled a bit, remembering that night only for the good, and avoiding the bad.
Ethan ran towards the field, it was the end of halftime, adrenaline coursed through his veins. Not to mention they were playing their rival school, and Ethan was ready to beat their ass. His young age was made up by his stamina and build, bigger and faster than most of the senior Varsity players as a junior, this meant he played the field more than the bench.
Everything seemed to be going in slow motion. His eyes searching over the crowds, looking for you, he always looked for you. When his hazel eyes locked with yours, he felt invincible. He admired your appearance, the way his warmup jersey fit you like a dress, and the way the color compliments your skin tone perfectly. “You go this.” You mouthed, giving him a small wink. A huge smile captivated Ethan’s face, “Dolan!” The coach called, knocking him from the trance you held him in. “You go this, E!” He heard Grayson say from the bench. All the praises made him feel like he was on Cloud 9.
The rest of the game went on without a hitch, and with Ethan’s help the Varsity team was kept undefeated. He was practically carried off the field by his teammates, like the infamous movie scenes, all they needed was for someone to pour gatorade on him.
Ethan practically ran out of the locker room, leaving Grayson in the dust, after the team pep-talk, needing to see you. The duffle bag on his shoulder was heavy, slowing him down a bit. His eyes scanned over the sea of cars, before landing on you, leaning against your car. “(Y/N)!” Ethan called, he watched your head turn in his direction and your lips pull into a smile, his heart skipped a beat. He loved when you smiled, it was one of his favorite features of yours.
As he began to walk towards you, someone grabbed his arm, causing him to stumble backwards. He snapped his head back around, looking for the source of resistance, and was greeted by the last person he expected to see, Julia Laverne. She was one of the new cheerleaders who had taken more than a liking to Ethan, well more of a liking to his physique and popularity, rather than him as a person. She snaked her arms around his neck, running her fingers through the small hairs on the back of his neck. “What the he-” Ethan opened his mouth to say, but was cut off by a pair of overly glossed lips against his.
He tried to pull away, but Julia held him there forcefully, and he didn’t want to harm her.. Once she finally let him free, he wiped away any accumulated gloss of his lips in disgust. “What the fuck is wrong with you?” He spat, sending Julia a crazed glance. “Oh, you know you liked it, sweetheart.” She giggled, placing her hand on his chest.”Your breath smells like onions and ass,’liked it’ is the last thing I would say.” He scoffed, turning and walking off.
Ethan’s eyes widened to when he noticed your absence. But soon his racing heart fell out of his chest when he noticed a familiar crumbled up jersey. He knelt down a picked up the rain soaked jersey, and as he stood back to his full height. As he took a step forward, he heard an odd noise from beneath his feet. His eye glanced down to find a small box, which he picked up as well. A small gust of wind swept through the parking lot, causing a small note to fluttered onto the concrete.
‘Hope you like it. Figured it was appropriate for your first Varsity game.’
That was all it said signed with a familiar signature. He’d know that signature anywhere, it was your signature. A feeling of guilt washed over Ethan, as he finally realized what you had gifted him. A small chain, with his jersey number hanging off the middle. This was something he wanted for months, and you got it for him.
“Earth to Ethan!” Grayson said, snapping his fingers in front of Ethan’s face. As he came back to reality, “Wh-uh?” he heard a flood of laughter coming from his teammates. “What’s up?” Ethan asked, shaking his head a bit. “As the Captain of this team, your team, I think you should make this toast.” Coach said, Ethan hadn’t even noticed the array of food set upon the table. “Uh-sure.”
Ethan stood up from his chair, eyes scanning over the people he had been playing football with for the last four year, and for once that night, a bit of sentiment and washed over him. Ethan shared a few encouraging words, before reciting the creed they said before each game, and toasting with every single one of his teammates, even Charles.
Everyone pigged out and ate as much as possible, and everything was fine. Ethan was even beginning to enjoy himself, laughing and reminiscing with the team. Of course, someone brought up the time Ethan nearly got decapitated by a football, which is a long story. Everything was going smoothly, that was until something Charles said peaked Ethan’s interest. As usual, Cox and his friends were making some vulgar comments about women, something Ethan couldn’t stand and had scolded them about it multiple times, this time though it was specifically girls that went to school with all of them. “Did you see that girl on the field last night?” Charles asked Damien, one of the starters for their team, “Which one?” He asked, taking a sip of his drink.
“The one with the camera.” That statement is what peaked Ethan’s interest the most, completely shifting his focus to their conversation instead of his previous one. “(Y/N)?” Damien asked, he knew (Y/N) because they shared a class together sophomore year. “Yeah, that’s her name.” Charles laughed. Ethan felt his anger levels beginning to rise faster and faster. Ethan was going to explode, he’s usually good at keeping his anger under wraps, but he could tell that wasn’t the case tonight.
“I bet she’s real good at taking nudes,” The words left Charles lips so easily, no shudder of distaste in his own words. Ethan prayed to any holy being that existed to make Charles stop, because if Ethan had to stop him it wouldn’t be pretty. But of course, Cox wasn’t done. “I mean, that girl can really work a camera. I wonder what else she could ‘work-out’ for me.” He nudged Damien. “Bet her p-Cox, don’t you fucking dare finish that sentence.” Ethan said through gritted teeth, cutting him off.
Charles glanced over to Ethan, head cocked to the side. “What was that, Cap?” He asked, an evil-grin plastered on his face. “Charles, you know damn well what I said.” Ethan said, tightening his jaw. “Last time I checked Ethan, you had your chance with (Y/N).” His tone was cocky, and Ethan knew whatever he said next was what was gonna set him off. “I’m warning you, Cox.” Was all Ethan said, while balling his fist. “Why don’t you step aside and let her be with a real man.”
Whatever happened next was a blur, all he knew was it ended with a fight, and Ethan Dolan never loses a fight.
