I feel so stubborn in not wanting to interact very much with people who use the incorrect definition of “proship”, but the definition the fancops/antis came up with is so pervasive in fandom spaces that people I agree with are using the wrong definition! It just frustrates the hell out of me!

Proship doesn’t mean “problematic ship”!!! It doesn’t! It literally is just the prefix “for”, as “in favor of”. And then other words like “comship” and “darkship” (though that second was kind of already a thing) came out of it and I see so many posts of people just arguing the semantics of it. Like, some people get pissy about their ship being called a “proship” and want it to be referred to as a “comship” (complicated/complex ship) instead, and “here’s an essay on why.”

AO3 saying they will not be banning AI-generated works on their platform

I agree with them and I respect them for this. no, I am not a fan of AI-generated fics, but as I’ve said many times before in the past:

AO3 was built with the “complete anti censorship” stance. them banning AI-generated works would be them going against their own core values of “no censorship”. and “no censorship” means nothing is censored. and that includes works you dislike for ethical or whatever reasons.

as of now, most (I believe) of creators who use AI to write for them properly tag their works as “AI-generated”. so you can safely filter these works out if you don’t wish to consume them. but I have no doubt the majority (if not all) of them will stop tagging their works as AI if AO3 actually bans AI works, which means these AI works will be untagged. you can never know for sure if the fic you read is AI or not, since they aren’t properly tagged anymore.

whether or not you like it, AI is getting better and more human-like, meaning it’s getting harder to spot when a fic is AI.

speculation, witch hunts, wrongful accusations and harassment harm real writers, as well as writing community as a whole, as much as AI does, if not more.

it’s impossible for AO3 to effectively ban and remove “only AI-generated works” without innocent human-made works getting wrongly marked as AI and deleted in the process. so if AO3 were to ban AI-generated works, it would mean

there was a chance of a human-made work getting wrongly marked as AI and taken down

there was a chance of an AI-generated work being wrongly accepted as human-made

fandom drama could and would cause innocent writers to get their human-made works falsely reported as AI

human-made fics that “upset people”, in terms of contents, could and almost certainly would be reported as AI, because there were people who “found the fics inappropriate/disgusting and wanted them taken down” — and the only way they could do that was by falsely reporting these fics as AI

AO3 volunteers would have to decide which works were AI “based on vibes alone”. and not only was it impossible for them to always make the correct judgement, there simply weren’t enough volunteers and time for every single work that was reported as AI to be thoroughly read by a human volunteer

no, “AI detector” is unreliable and the machine itself is also AI — it’s known to have incorrectly marked human-made works as AI and AI-generated works as human-made.

TL;DR — no matter how much you hate AI-generated fics, banning them would do more harm than good.

Isn't it a little weird when people are trying to make a pro fiction message and say "you need to protect freedom of self expression including for gross sex things you don't like", they tend to bring examples of relatively milquetoast things? Like huge tits in anime.

I wanna go all the way in and say, I think you should defend rights to create feral furry porn, kodocon, content that eroticizes bigotry, and everything else adjacent.

I want to live in a world where people are free to make fictional sexual media of things they shouldn't and won't do irl for moral reasons. Not just things that are a little cringe or vulgar or anatomically impossible.

Long confession/rant!:

I remember when Invader Zim fangirls would obsess over ZADR (Zim x Dib romance) back in 2000’s DeviantArt. I preferred ZAGR (Zim x Gaz romance) as a kid but I didn’t mind ZADR. I enjoyed seeing ZADR fangirls expressing their love for the ship freely. Especially when they get hyped at InvaderCon panels.

Nowadays, the IZ fandom forbids people to ship ZADR and ZAGR because “umm, Zim’s an adult!1!!1. If you’re going to ship him with Dib or Gaz, age them up pleaassee!!!1!1 If you don’t, then you’re supporting p3d0philia!!!1!” I never viewed ZADR or ZAGR as sexual ships (again, I was a kid at the time) and I still don’t, but man….I hate what the fandom has become.

Honestly, Zim has no age. He’s an “adult” in Irken years but Jhonen has called Zim a “child/teen” before, and said that ZAGR would’ve been a possible canon ship if the show had romance in it. The show doesn’t take itself too seriously. WHO CARES. Zim and Dib’s VAs (Richard Horvitz and Andy Berman) even played into the ZADR ship at an old InvaderCon panel where they read a script for an unfinished episode and made their character puppets kiss.

The art policing from these antis is so tiring. Artists are free to “age up” Dib or Gaz in modern ZADR/ZAGR fan art but I honestly find art like that to be ridiculous. The dumb reasoning behind that kind of fan art is what makes me dislike it. But hey, I just mind my business and ship ZADR and ZAGR the way they are without policing people.

You mean like the same three people in the tags from the fandom of the show that's so huge it rivals with Harry Potter in popularity? Damn, they must be pretty powerful.

In all seriousness, I can see how haters driving out some people. But that is not the only thing why the fandom became smaller.

- There are people who left, because they didn't liked where the show was going (considering how the people who complain about how the haters shouldn't be continuing the show, if they're not enjoying it anymore, you'd think they'd be happy for some people doing exactly that)

- People who love most of the show, but not kissing it up to every turn are also labeled as haters, not just the show, but the creator too, so of course they stopped talking about the series, because they don't want to walk on egg shells

- The show has lots of seasons, some people just fall off
