A Choir AU in which Tom Kazansky is smitten with Pete Mitchell from first sight, but their initial spark turns into jealousy and hurt when Pete doesn't keep a promise. Inspired by Antonio Estevez's Cantata Criolla Gentle Rivals to Lovers if you squint. Hurt and jealously turn into attraction. --- The stranger was alight with a joy Tom hadn’t seen so genuinely given in a long time. Those he found himself typically surrounded by wore masks of amusement; comedy and tragedy in their own right. In the rooms Tom found himself in on a typical day he felt like a court jester among stanch aristocracy, the soul of a performer tucked away in a too stiff suit, his tie a constant reminder of his too neat speech pulled tight against his neck. There were few places and times where he felt the joy radiate through him authentically. Typically he was on a stage, performing to a backdrop of music that made his soul sway. A tuxedo felt more at home than a traditional suit, his voice an instrument of story telling. He felt connected there, to something larger than himself.

Pete “Maverick” Mitchell and Tom “Iceman” Kazansky were a pair from the moment they landed back on the Enterprise after the Layton Mission. Pete Mitchell was never the type the Navy would have looked twice at, so he locked himself away behind his Maverick persona. Tom Kazansky wasn't the type that should have wanted the Navy, so he locked his past behind an iron gate and let Iceman be the poster child for the Navy instead. The pair are half in love, full of yearning, and troubled with their own relationships.

Jake ‘Hangman’ Seresin disobeys a direct order and goes back for Captain Mitchell after he was shot down in enemy territory. He and Maverick are captured, subjected to physical and mental torture. In their tiny prison cell, they find comfort in deep, quiet conversations. A month later, Jake is rescued. Maverick isn’t. Crushed with overwhelming guilt, he seeks Maverick’s son to apologize for surviving. But everyone tells him Maverick doesn’t have a son. Now begins his obsession, risking everything to find the truth. Even getting involved with an organization the Navy wants to pretend doesn’t exist.
I proudly present this fanfic with hope that you all enjoy it!! the journey it took to get to this 68k has its ups and downs, and now that I am past the finish line I can say it was an enjoyable experience! Every story has a lesson it can teach you, this one taught me patience and how resilient I am for finishing this amidst many other deadlines.

My entire characterization of Slider and Ice is based on that one post where they pointed out that the camera cuts to Slider during Ice’s “you may not like the people you fly with, they may not like you” speech. A team that works well together but are not friends. They are together because it is a necessity, because they happen to fly well together. They are not Maverick and Goose, they are not close, they just do what has to be done.
Not that the characterization of them being best friends is bad or wrong, I just think it’s fun to look at it from a different angle
