Connecting Design: A Manifesto

The design disciplines represented at Design Week Portland are almost exactly the same as those taught at the Bauhaus from 1919 to 1933. Dessau, a town of 80,000, became the world capital of design when the Bauhaus moved there. The power of the Bauhaus was in the idea of a “total” work of art. This was achieved by connecting many types of designers and disciplines under one roof: artists, architects, graphic designers, interior designers, industrial designers, and typographers.

Do designers even believe in cross-discipline “movements” anymore? Why isn’t Portland a Dessau on the Willamette?
