There are hardly any female werewolves because they break all the classic rules of femininity. They force you to confront female violence, strength, size, grotesqueness and uncontrollability. Historically female shapeshifters always shift into something dangerous (snake) or sleek (cat) or dainty (bird) but female werewolves ignore the masculine gaze completely. They're distorted beasts that have no ulterior motive except to destroy. Nothing about them is nurturing or modest. They're the opposite of what a woman "should be." Their omission from pop culture is not an accident.

I know this is maybe not the point of the post, but this reminded me of this beautiful poem called When My Wife Is A Werewolf by Rosamund Taylor which I really adore so I thought I would share it.

This is taken from a collection of contemporary queer Irish poetry called Queering the Green, which has some truly wonderful work in it and is available from The Lifeboat Press (currently sold out but hopefully available again soon if you're interested).

Thank gd for Avery Brooks man. Ds9 wouldn't be half the show it is without him. Yes because of his magnetic and dynamic performance as Sisko but arguably more than that his role in creative direction and shaping the story and Sisko's arc. The finale, for instance, would've been so much worse if not for Brooks's insistence that Sisko promise to return to the station one day. And there's a thousand instances like that. We owe him EVERYTHING!!!

Deep Space Nine shined because Brooks, Todd, Jerald and the cast as a whole, were able to impress their hearts into it.

But Avery Brooks definetly raised the bar from the beginning so that everyone else felt inspired to bring their best.

I can't get through The Visitor (s4.2) and Far Beyond the Stars (s6.14) without crying, or in the case of In the Pale Moonlight (s6.19) giving Brooks a loud "Hell Ya!".

I taught Sunday School back in the old days and one lesson was on the tower of Babel... and the lesson plan called for all the kids to be making towers from blocks and I would be the greedy ultimate tower maker stealing their blocks for my tower...

But the tower of Babel was of Babel right? So I asked the kids if they were making a building, what kind of building would it be? A school? A hospital? A fire station?

And as I begun taking bricks the lesson became that Babel was weaker because of the ambitions of misguided and powerful men...

Now I'm no longer religious, but it seems to me that this latest "ai & robots will fix everything" season we are going through as a civilization has even more of the hallmarks of "attempting to create or become god at all costs" than any other time in history aside from some ancient metaphor...
