Kenji is a male Saniwa in his early thirties. His journey began at just 18 years of age with his first sword being Kasen Kanesada.
He was carefree back then, used to bond with his swords on a deeply personal level. Really, he'd join them a lot be it kitchen duty, lounging in the gardens or later even drinking the night away if it wasn't time for the onsen.
However, this kind of behavior showed it's downside in the more serious of times: The swords lacked practice and therefore training in actual battle conditions, since the young man hesitated to put his 'friends' out there.
The attack on the honmaru through the HRA hit with full force. Negelected duties as a Saniwa led to the fatal mistake of not noticing the apporaching danger early enough. The Touken Danshi entered the battle unprepared and so it took a turn for the worst possible outcome. Kenji stood among shattered blades, crushed dreams and torn families.
That day he lost a good 60% of his swords, along with a big part of his honmaru grounds. All remaining rescources went into healing the ones that survived and making sure to at least secure shelter and food.
He saw the pain in the faces of his swords - the losses of brothers, of lovers and friends. And he knew- it was his fault. He failed.
Naturally, Kenji changed that day. He kept the shattered blades to smith everyone again, hoping to be able to mix the old shards in to give back a memory or two; even if he probably could never face them directly again.
He grew more strict on training schedules and very up to the rules. A righteous man. Yet he kept his warm side, even if way more mature. Nothing can shake him that easily now. He still likes to show presence among his swords but can't keep them company for long without feeling that guilt.
To earn more funds for rebuilding his Honmaru, he started working for the time government, after learning and exercising day and night, beyond exhaustion.
Today he is usually sent to struggling new Saniwa to aid them in their strategies and general training organization. Kenji often joins the teams to the battlefront to analyze their fighting and detect weaknesses.
He is eager to prevent anything even close to what happened to him - probably trying to make up for his mistakes.
