Ended up on Archive of Our Own after rereading Gideon the Ninth and it's great to see that the parts of the story that had me by the throat hit for everyone else too. The whole fandom is like, "Yeah, the pool scene. Am I right?" An author's note just being, "Mom says it's my turn to write the post-pool scene fic." Also, the tag "Content warning: Ianthe Tridentarius." Not a content warning for something she did, just that she's there. I hang around the edges of the fandom, not interacting with anyone, but y'all are funny as fuck and I'm happy to be here :)

And our main character is like, "I have dealt with anxiety and panic attacks my whole life and honestly, now that I know I'm not overreacting and there IS spooky shit going on, I am oddly calm about it. I am ride or die for you, girl. Let's go dig up a grave and kill some undead things." Romance.

Empire higher-ups be like, "WHY is the barbarian ambassador who was mixed up in the attempted coup a few months ago now on the front lines of our first-contact war with aliens?" Literally because her former cultural liaison was bored with her new job and missed her girlfriend, so decided she was gonna self-appoint herself as a diplomatic envoy, pick up her girl, and they were going to go talk with the aliens. And I think that's very sexy of her.

the more I think about it the funnier the beginning of Horizon Forbidden West is

girl is introverted/shy enough that she sneaks out of a celebration in her honour (for saving a whole kingdom and quite literally also the world) and basically disappears off the face of the earth for 6 months

and when a friend finally tracks her down and convinces her to return to the big city for help the first thing she sees on her return is a 20-foot-tall statue of herself

Absolutely insane that when editing my most recent chapter for me, my mom wrote in the margins "anachronistic" about phone booths. Because they aren't a thing anymore, so even though technology didn't really progress past 2000 in the story and in-universe people would know what they are, readers might not and I still have to explain what phone booths are in the text...

contemplation about the old version below the cut

first time i’ve done this in a while! i can’t believe i left the signature like that in the old one 😬. i think the general issue was with whatever brush i was using, i was clearly struggling with the blending.

i do like the stronger/blocky style around the face, but i don’t think i have the line integrity to do a whole painting like that even now. i pushed the colours further in the old painting and it really makes it pop.

things i’ve gotten better at: suggestive detail, faces in general, better brush for rendering (mechanical pencil LOL), confidence with my lines. and i’m way faster now 👍🏼

it’s fun to see that i’m improving even though i can see less. can’t blame the eye disease for all my problems 😩
