Simon finally trusts Grace enough to explain what The Quiet Rapture is and when Grace goes to look stuff up about it to see if that's even a concept in his universe the movie pops up and Simon is horrified to realize that it's just a two hour recreation of his most vulnerable moment in life that just. exists out there. for everyone to see. for Grace to see. Nevermind all of the existential questions he gets from it, the sheer amount of shame is enough to kill a man.

Oh. Here's an idea.

I've seen a bit of "Grace's ghost haunting Stratt on Earth".

But what if, shortly after the Hail Mary launch, Stratt's grip on the world faltered without having the necessity of Project Hail Mary to justify her actions and authority? What if she was pressured into stepping back her personal security measures, and then someone managed to get at her and assassinate her?

And after she died -- she'd given her heart and the work of her hands over to humanity, to Earth's future. But her heart was now still in her chest, her hands quiet and motionless. With her death, there was nothing left on Earth that Eva Stratt could do to make a difference.

But somewhere else, perhaps...

What if it was Stratt's ghost haunting Grace?

I have encountered new fandom discourse, and I believe it is time to write something small for your consideration. What I have heard is "Doesn't it break your heart that they killed Grace and they didn't even care just because he didn't have a family or even a dog? Doesn't it make you ILL with misery?" (Paraphrasing) but the thought follows because of the speeches where she tries to convince Grace to commit suicide for the sake of the people of the Earth.

You my fellow people... I think you are both misreading the situation, and missing out on the bigger deeper desperation of it all.

Grace is so likeable. No, he doesn't have a girlfriend or a dog. But can't you feel his gravity? I think by that point, he was perhaps her very best friend. How could she mention friends along with family when trying to convince him to leave, when not only her, but most of the team must shatter their hearts to do this to him as they had for those other brave men and women.

Please go Grace. Please choose to go so I don't have to do what must be done. I'm begging you Grace. My guilt is not enough to stop this. Grace you have no tether. Please, Grace, choose to die the right way so that I don't have to choose for you.

I'm cooking up an au where instead of Simon going to Grace's universe, Grace goes to Simon's. Directly after Grace jettisons the fuel banks and he passes out from the sheer amount of centrifugal force, he wakes in a medical bay. It's not as sterile as it should be and it doesn't smell quite right, but he attempts to sit up and finds he is chained to the cot.

He gets questioned by the C.O.I. and isn't listened to when he tries to explain that no, he doesn't know what the C.O.I. is, or what Eden is, or the fact that there are no stars. He wasn't sent by anyone, and he was supposed to be saving the stars.

He's not believed and thrown into a cell, questioning on if the life he remembers was real or not, and grappling with the fact that if he cannot find a way to go back, Rocky, the Eridians, humanity is dead.

And he has a rude cellmate who is angry almost all the time and treated like shit by the prison guards, but who also has nightmares and seams unwell.

And maybe, well, they learn to trust and care for one another

it's just like. what if you woke up in space with no idea how you got there and you didn't even remember the corpses that were once your friends. all alone on a suicide mission, the last hope for humanity with no hope of your own. and then suddenly you weren't alone. you made a friend. and the friend kept you company and watched over you while you slept and said you would get to go home after all and you could save both of your worlds. and you forgot being lonely and you had hope for the first time in a long time and things just might be okay.

and then the friend saved your life and now he might be dead and he might be dead because he saved your life and it's not like you could heal him even if you were the kind of human who did that because your friend isn't human and you don't know the first thing about how to help him and so you watch his corpse just in case he's not dead just in case he's only sleeping because if he's sleeping you need to watch him because you promised you'd watch him sleep. and in the meantime you have to keep working. you have to keep trying to save both of your worlds because he might wake up and you can't let him think you were just twiddling your thumbs (sobbing into your fucking hands) all this time so you have to keep working. even though your friend might be dead. and you might be right back where you started. all alone, on a suicide mission, on a spaceship, with a corpse that was once your friend.
